I made the mistake of reading the Yahoo! News comments for this and seeing a ton of people attacking the girl for "ruining it for everyone else by wanting special rights" [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Don't know why the hell anyone who's not a douchebag would want to go to prom, but I'm still on this girl's side.

That said, if I had known you could get the prom outright canceled just by being gay, I'd have "threatened" to bring another dude to the prom when I was in high school [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
"Ruining it for everyone else" would have almost made my stay at that school worthwhile.

We had people attend prom with their same-sex friends all the time at my school. Granted, they were always girls who were known friends, and I don't think it would've gone down well if it were guys. Actually, I remember gay friends of mine requesting they be able to go down Senior Walk with their partners and being specifically turned down by the principal. So... while it's fucked that they were against her, it's completely weird that they canceled prom.

Let me get this straight - the school cancelled the WHOLE prom just because of ONE lesbian couple?

My first thought was that the couple's big mistake was *asking*, and other people's comments bear that out.

Also, haven't we discussed a story a lot like this, except (IIRC) it involved some fundie bible-thumping school that was trying to avoid having a prom at all or something like that?

It violates her right to free expression under the First Amendment. It also could potentially be a violation of her right to freedom of association (specifically the "intimate association" interpretation that govern personal relationship) under the same.

Yeah, I'm ignoring the comments on most news sites about this. Nasty people abound.

So saying she couldn't go with her girlfriend and having the prom anyway was no longer an option: it was either let her bring her girlfriend, or don't have the prom. The school decided to take its ball and go home.

I hate this kind of shit because it's all about making someone feel bad for asking to be treated like everyone else. My feelings exactly. I already RAEG'd about this backhanded shit over at my FB; of course, I was still hoping that most people would realize that this is in no way hers, but the goddamn school's fault, but noooo, as usual, I overestimated people. (Also, I hated my prom. Doesn't mean that I condone that someone else who obviously wants to go should be a) told what to wear, b) told whom to bring and c) made into a scapegoat for the whole community when she stands up for her rights to determine first two things for herself.)

I read the first three or four comments on the Yahoo story on this and quietly closed the page. And I don't for one minute believe the school didn't take the stance they did deliberately so that everyone would blame it on the girl instead of them for violating someone's civil rights.

On the other hand, given that it seems to be a pretty small school, I find it hard to believe that no one was aware this couple existed. Or was it okay as long as they didn't start demanding the same rights as everyone else?

A friend of mine posted the article in her Facebook and it turned into a bunch of screeching harpies crying over the loss of the prom for the "regular kids." Mission accomplished, school.
