I was thinking of a subset of gay men. Neither he nor his kid seem to think its a big deal, I think it's wasteful and redneck trash, but whatever, let them be retarded

| Well here's my two cents:
1. Nope, the video is not funny.
2. It is bad that the police chose to support and uphold his actions. He did commit multiple crimes. They did not prosecute because of who committed them and who they were committed against, and this demonstrates the actual role of the police in this society.
3. It is bad that any minors are still in this man's custody. Again, this demonstrates the actual role of the police...
4. It is bad that many people approve his actions. It is an indicator of our cultural climate and the values of this society.
This world is now actually going backwards in terms of eliminating patriarchy. We need a new a whole new world.

Well, women got the right to vote in 1920. That was followed by The Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War (and all of the conflicts therein), Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, MADD, and other Soccer Moms With WAAAAAAAY Too Much Time On Their Hands Butthurting All Over the Place groups. So the useful members of society ( the men the white men) figured that if we were ever to stop the sheer fucking chaos allowing mad cows to vote caused, we'd have to roll back the rights. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Ever since men have had the right to vote, we've had a plethora of wars, great bouts of famine, the Black Plague, religious persecution of all and sundry, the fall of the Roman Empire, a whole lot of needless cruelty committed under various reasons, though they generally amounted to "I want this man's land", a huge amount of hocus 'science' (involving flat earths, measuring someone's personality by the size of their cranium, floating witches and the idea that you can see the Chinese wall from the moon) and, finally, the idea took root that horoscopes are an accurate way of divining the truth and not, y'know, bullshit. Men haven't got a better rep than women. Also, you America-centric lackwit, women got the right to vote (under the right conditions) in 1718 in Sweden and though that was eventually revoked, women of New Zealand and the Cook Islands have been able to vote since 1893. I realize that it might be hard to grasp that there's more to the world than the USA, but if you're seriously going to mutter that WWII and the Great Depression were only relevant in their context to America, I will force-feed you to a woodchipper.

WWII was merely European Clusterfuck II and Only Peripherally Related Oriental Skirmishes until GLORIOUS AMERICALAND got involved. And the Great Depression was only Great because the Greatest was Depressed. If it's just a bunch of greasy Europeans more broke than previously believed to be mathematically possible killing themselves over it, we don't call it The Great Depression, we call it Greece.

Yeah, I'm posting this from the kitchen barefoot and pregnant. I think Sunsara Taylor sez it pretty good: "We are told that 'equality for women has been won' and that 'there are no limits to what girls can achieve.' BULLSHIT! Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten. Every day three to four women are killed by their partners. One out of four female college students will be raped or sexually assaulted while in college. In recent years, pornography has become increasingly violent, cruel, degrading towards women; ...the broader culture has been pornified: pole dancing is taught at gyms, 'sexting' is a national phenomenon among teens, and the strip club is the accepted backdrop to "male bonding." All this is tied in with, and reinforces, the trafficking of millions of women and girls as literal chattel in the international sex industry. At the same time, a Christian fundamentalist-driven assault is imperiling abortion, birth control, real sex education and women's lives. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people who do not conform to traditional patriarchal gender and sexual norms are demonized and threatened. Abortion doctors are killed. Women who seek abortions-or even birth control-are stigmatized. 2011 saw the largest spate of legal restrictions on abortion since Roe v. Wade in 1973. ALL THIS MUST BE STOPPED! Fetuses are not babies. Women are not incubators. Abortion is not murder. Women are not objects. Women are not things to be used for the sexual pleasure of men NOR are they breeders of children. WOMEN ARE HUMAN BEINGS CAPABLE OF FULL EQUALITY IN EVERY REALM! It is long past time that this new generation stand up, reject, and RESIST this culture of rape and pornography; this culture that labels women 'selfish' if they choose not to become mothers; this culture that reduces women and girls to sexualized objects while denying their full multi-dimensional humanity (including their right-as one essential part of this-to explore their sexuality without shame or stigma); this culture that demonizes and bullies LGBT people."

| Let's also not forget the part where this attitude people have been displaying by patting this idiot on the ass for destroying his daughter's property for being a dumb teenager is a symptom of the same sort of attitude adults have towards kids and teens that leads to Zero Tolerance laws in school districts and things like that one kid who's principle called the police and told them to arrest her for scribbling on her desk with marker.
Maybe not exactly like it, but it still seems like people treat teenagers like they're awful and horrible and "Should know better" when they're still kids basically and haven't finished developing yet. People keep focusing on the fact that she's a teenager instead of focusing on the fact that he's an adult who ought to know better exactly because she's a teenager, and teenagers are miniature criminals waiting to happen or annoying stupid brats who need to be smacked as hard as possible for the crime of not quite being adults yet. It's stupid and people need to stop doing it.
(And yes some teenagers do things that they do in fact deserve to go to jail for, but that's not the point of this rant)
Can we all just agree that shooting someone's laptop + posting it on youtube = not the way to punish anyone for anything? Please? I'm losing what little respect I still had for you guys, here.

Nevernvernevernever. Srsly, though, I respect you guys and your right to have opinions and stuff... but dismissing patriarchal society just because women do not have it as shitty now as we did a century ago? I really thought better if you, Badge. And I am still reeling a little by Lapin compairing running up a 2000 dollar cell bill to whining on facebook and Doobie implying that refusing to buy your 13-year-old daughter clothes is somehow ok. Just because you give someone the money to buy a thing does not mean that thing belongs to you, nor does something belonging to your child mean that it belongs to you. If I gave my neighbor a couple thousand dollars and they bought a computer and then I went over to their house and smashed it in with a hammer, I would be arrested. This attitude that just because parenting is hard and expensive (something most people who have children are aware of) somehow that means that children are property and not real people capable of owning things or even having their own opinions (keep in mind that having an opinion is basically what this girl was being punished for) is downright scary to me. This one girl is probably going to be fine, yes. One laptop being broken is not a huge deal. However, I do not think that it is a leap to go from destroying a kid's property because they bought it with 'your' money to raping a kid because you 'made' them and it is your right. Is this one particular redneck doing that? Probably not. Could some of these assholes who think this video is the best thing evah do something like that? Statistically, I think it is likely. Could this video reinforce their 'children as property' viewpoint and aid in their conviction that it is their right to do so? Yes, I believe it could. I am aware that there is a blurry line between having to make kids do stuff they do not want to do for their own good and treating them like non-people, but stealing and destroying your child's stuff? C'mon.

| To expand on Reep's point, arguing the philosophy and arguing the event are not always the same point. A majority of the discussion's derail came from people insisting that what he did wasn't that bad in terms of expense, excess, etc. This is true, but only subjectively. A majority of the people I see in this thread believe that his reaction was poor parenting. The tools he used to do the job are less relevant than the fact that he reacted to his daughter's complaining as if his daughter was his enemy, and she had slighted him in some way. | |

I was actually thinking about this thread and this very point today. At what point in time, what age, do you draw the line and say, well, after that I'm going to respect your property as yours, but not before, but the transition from one to the other will totally not be a problem for either of us? How do you teach a kid to respect other people, and by extension their things, if not by example? And yes, children are very much people. The fact that this girl is going LOL HAHA WHATEVS just tells me that she's internalized the lesson that her things are only hers until daddy says otherwise. Which is Not Cool. - Quote :

Even if we don't go as far as all that, the idea that you more or less own your kids and they can't expect jack shit from you and are somehow supposed to owe you (I made you! You owe me your life! You owe me everything!) is so mindboggling, and so hurtful. No child in the history of the world ever asked to be made, so you don't get to expect gratitude that you did. And if you can't keep your dick wrapped you take responsibility for the result. And no, you ain't getting a nobel peace prize for it. - Mikey wrote:
