Like I said before, the thing that pisses me off is all the people givin the guy asspats about it. It is bad parenting and I can forgive that because parenting is hard and most people survive bad parenting alright, but the circle jerk over how OMGawsum this guy is upsets me.

Well here's my two cents:

1. Nope, the video is not funny.

2. It is bad that the police chose to support and uphold his actions. He did commit multiple crimes. They did not prosecute because of who committed them and who they were committed against, and this demonstrates the actual role of the police in this society.

3. It is bad that any minors are still in this man's custody. Again, this demonstrates the actual role of the police...

4. It is bad that many people approve his actions. It is an indicator of our cultural climate and the values of this society.

Ever since men have had the right to vote, we've had a plethora of wars, great bouts of famine, the Black Plague, religious persecution of all and sundry, the fall of the Roman Empire, a whole lot of needless cruelty committed under various reasons, though they generally amounted to "I want this man's land", a huge amount of hocus 'science' (involving flat earths, measuring someone's personality by the size of their cranium, floating witches and the idea that you can see the Chinese wall from the moon) and, finally, the idea took root that horoscopes are an accurate way of divining the truth and not, y'know, bullshit. Maybe not exactly like it, but it still seems like people treat teenagers like they're awful and horrible and "Should know better" when they're still kids basically and haven't finished developing yet. People keep focusing on the fact that she's a teenager instead of focusing on the fact that he's an adult who ought to know better exactly because she's a teenager, and teenagers are miniature criminals waiting to happen or annoying stupid brats who need to be smacked as hard as possible for the crime of not quite being adults yet. Just because you give someone the money to buy a thing does not mean that thing belongs to you, nor does something belonging to your child mean that it belongs to you. If I gave my neighbor a couple thousand dollars and they bought a computer and then I went over to their house and smashed it in with a hammer, I would be arrested. This attitude that just because parenting is hard and expensive (something most people who have children are aware of) somehow that means that children are property and not real people capable of owning things or even having their own opinions (keep in mind that having an opinion is basically what this girl was being punished for) is downright scary to me.

This one girl is probably going to be fine, yes. One laptop being broken is not a huge deal. However, I do not think that it is a leap to go from destroying a kid's property because they bought it with 'your' money to raping a kid because you 'made' them and it is your right. Is this one particular redneck doing that? Probably not. Could some of these assholes who think this video is the best thing evah do something like that? Statistically, I think it is likely. Could this video reinforce their 'children as property' viewpoint and aid in their conviction that it is their right to do so? Yes, I believe it could.

I am aware that there is a blurry line between having to make kids do stuff they do not want to do for their own good and treating them like non-people, but stealing and destroying your child's stuff? C'mon.

To expand on Reep's point, arguing the philosophy and arguing the event are not always the same point. A majority of the discussion's derail came from people insisting that what he did wasn't that bad in terms of expense, excess, etc. This is true, but only subjectively. A majority of the people I see in this thread believe that his reaction was poor parenting. The tools he used to do the job are less relevant than the fact that he reacted to his daughter's complaining as if his daughter was his enemy, and she had slighted him in some way.

I was actually thinking about this thread and this very point today. At what point in time, what age, do you draw the line and say, well, after that I'm going to respect your property as yours, but not before, but the transition from one to the other will totally not be a problem for either of us?

How do you teach a kid to respect other people, and by extension their things, if not by example? And yes, children are very much people.
