| I don't know. This seems like something my family would do to one of their kids, and the rest of us "kids" (My generation are still the children, despite two of us being married, and one having a kid) would probably laugh until it hurt at the one currently holding the idiot ball.
Because we've all held it at one point.
I mean, maybe it's because I grew up with guns being such a big part of my life (My seven-year-old sister is already a pretty good shot with gun and bow, for example), but to me, shooting something to destroy it is hilarious. Because it's just so richly satisfying. And as for a dad shooting a kid's laptop, fuck, that's funny as all get out. My nuclear family didn't do stuff like this, but my uncle did shoot my cousin's cell phone when he ran up a $2000 bill behind their backs, and he was never allowed to have a cell phone under their plan again. He had to get a job, buy a new phone, and pay for his own plan, after he paid back his parents.
When my sister did the same thing at age fourteen, she wasn't allowed a cell phone again until she was eighteen, and she has to pay for it.
I mean, why the fuck wouldn't you punish a child who is old enough to know better? BFD. It's not like she's emotionally traumatized. She'll get the fuck over it, get a job, and buy her own. And if this kind of shit would actually do all the psychological damage you all seem to think it would do, you seriously need to toughen up. It's a fucking computer, he emptied a gun into it. Whoo, scary.

Old enough to know better than to complain on FB where the people she's complaining about can see it. Seriously. What a dumbfuck. You don't post shit like that online. Fuck, I'm twenty-two, and I would never post something like that about my parents on my friends-locked FB, because they would somehow find out, and I would never hear the fucking end of it. This is shit you rant about on your friend's back deck until it's out of your system and is never spoken of again.

I drew it up to submit to Bad Dragon as a design, but then I remembered that I'd actually have to go into the BD forums to make that dream a reality. Seriously. What a dumbfuck. You don't post shit like that online. Fuck, I'm twenty-two, and I would never post something like that about my blah blah just world hypothesis "it's REALLY her fault" blah Relevant part in bold, because she's not twenty-two, she's FIFTEEN. Fifteen year-olds aren't known for being paragons of sound judgment and rational decision making skills. The person here who was the adult, and should have had better fucking sense than this, is her father. Regardless of her immaturity (which, again, FIFTEEN,) he should have behaved himself in a way that was at least setting an example for how she should behave in the future. Even if she does learn from this instead of harboring resentment for years- which, let's face it, is what's ACTUALLY going to happen -the best society could hope for is another person who grows up honestly thinking that taking a gun to the possessions of people who made you angry is an ok thing to do.

| ^^This. It's one thing to take away a child's cellphone if that child ran up a huge bill. It's another thing to shoot up a child's laptop, which she needs for school and which you did not buy her, because she whined about having to do chores. What's he going to do if she writes something nasty about him in her diary, break her fingers? Or if she rants to her friends, is he going to knock her teeth out?
Get a fucking clue. | |

Be less sensationalist, for once in your posts. No, I'm serious. He's decreed that she's not allowed to complain. The last time she complained, she was grounded for three months. He says so in the video. This time he shot her laptop and is going to make her pay for the software and bullets. What's he gonna do if she complains offline? Fifteen year olds whine all the time, especially about housework. You should remember better than I do, you're younger than me. Doesn't matter as long as they still do as they're told. I've never understood this insistence by parents that their teenage child constantly have a smile on his/her face and a song in his/her heart while raking up leaves/eating vegetables/doing homework etc. What's the point in making a fucking federal case out of it? What's he gonna do if she does something that breaks one of the "big rules"?

| I work (sort of) with kids and have regularly had to tell them to stop complaining about this or that because it's completely useless and they just need to suck it up and be in the real world but you tell them. Then if that doesn't work you ground them. Then if that doesn't work you CALMLY take their shit away. Then if that doesn't work oh well your kid sucks and you move on. The message that this dad sent was overwhelmingly "MY WAY OR SHOOTING" and most people don't want to think that shit like that leaves an imprint but it does, and the damage is often worse if not apparent.
That having been said, this is still maybe only in the top 20th or so percentile of big fat stupid things a parent can do.

You are missing SO MANY POINTS. Allow me to list them. 1.) If you're going to take the laptop away, do something more productive with it than destroying it. Donate to some broke black baby charity, or at least hawk in on eBay for cash to buy more ammo. 2.) If you are going to destroy it, be more creative. "Lol i has gun." Fucking redneck idiot. If you are going to destroy technology in a field, you better use a goddamn baseball bat and blast some gangsta rap while you do it. 3.) Guns have two purposes. The first is to be used to practice shooting. The second is to kill things. You don't use them to prove a point. A cell phone is small enough to qualify as target practice, however.

Not sure what you're missing, here. This would be like a dad shooting video of his daughter's underwear drawer and uploading it to get back at her for being a "dirty fuckin' slut". Hey guess what? It's a good chance that any sort of parental retaliation would fall under some kind of abuse category; namely emotional. For what it's worth, I'm not overwhelmingly pro-gun control laws (I live in a city with really stringent gun control laws and know firsthand how poorly that shit works in practice,) but it's not wrong to point out when stupid people do stupid things with lethal weapons, or wish that they didn't own them due to their stupidity. - Penguin wrote:

Hey guess what? It's a good chance that any sort of parental retaliation would fall under some kind of abuse category; namely emotional. Unless you're one of those people that don't believe that emotional abuse exists. This in spades. Teenagers whine about shit, it's part of adolescence. I did from time to time - especially since I had legitimate things to whine about, like the physical and emotional abuse I was being subjected to - and even though I got smacked around and told awful lies about myself over and over, I never had someone shoot up my computer and boast about it online. (I was threatened with throat-slitting by my mother's boyfriend while he was pointing a huge-ass knife at me, but that's another story.) This bullshit is why I am strongly in favour of parental licensing; it would do children everywhere a world of good to find out if someone is fit to become a parent BEFORE letting them do so. If I was in her shoes, I would have left home, taken out a restraining order and sued him for the value of the laptop. That asshole does not deserve to be a father.

| Okay I'll admit I didn't watch the video until now, but I really don't think that it matters, the description given through this thread is reasonably sufficent, he's an unstable man with a gun using it to prove a point to his FIFTEEN year old daughter. Pretty cut and dry as far as bad parenting goes.
I will say though that I love how he set the stage at the beginning of the video. Sitting in a lawn chair in the middle of nowhere smoking a cigarette, carrying a print-out of his FIFTEEN year old daughter's complaint. He reads the complaint, while smoking. Strong blocking there in the beginning, you really get the feel that he's a somewhat unhinged redneck.

No, but the part of their brains that says, "Hey, this might be a stupid idea" isn't done developing yet. So they do stupid shit, then learn from said stupid shit, hopefully without permanent, life-altering repercussions. While I like the fact that he's willing to discipline his kid (I am so, so tired of whiny, entitled behavior coming from students--did no one ever tell you "no" before?), this was way over the top. It's a waste of technology and money, and it's really immature behavior on his part. She behaves badly, he behaves worse? What the hell does that teach anyone? Ground her, sure. Take away the computer. Or, if posting online is the issue, block her from the internet at home. If he's really an IT guy, he'd know how to do it right. But destroying something that was hers that she needed for school? Come on.
