Yeah, but this is an old trick. It's win-win - either the bill passes or every Congressperson and Senator who votes against it gets labeled as in favor of child pornography. In an election year, how many politicians in toss-up or swing Districts are going to take that chance?

Previous attempts at child porn bills have been shot down as unconstitutional (all of them violated the 1st Amendment, and Smith's bill reportedly does as well even without the SOPA add-on), but given how the Supreme Court is apparently heavy on RIAA-biased members of late...yeah, not too confident this bill will get shitcanned as well.

So they killed SOPA, and SOPA to the tenth power took its place:

That's the child porn bill I was talking about. It's already running into bitter opposition in Congress from the same people who opposed SOPA/PIPA, so expect this to explode into a full-on war soon.

Lamar Smith is a fucking pig. More so than most others in Congress, and that's one hell of a feat to pull off.

Honestly though, the trouble with banning child porn is that it stops dirty men looking at it for kicks, but it won't stop people abusing children to make it and sell it to other people who aren't bothered by that law. It will stop people tracking down those children and offenders so easily. It will make it easy to pretend it doesn't exist. That's what Politicians like to do with problems they can't solve.

And then you can worry that those dirty men will go for the real thing if they can't get the fake thing.

If it doesn't stop the abuse in the first place - and it won't - what's the POINT?

Child porn is illiegal anyway. Anybody with it is going to have their computer taken away and probably prosecuted or something. Additional measures really aren't going to help anybody.

My point remains that the laws we have against child abuse and child pornography are adequate. They don't stop it happening, but neither will other laws that further constrict the legal user's freedom.
