Yes, I've read it. It was one of the most damned depressing books I've ever read. I far prefer Animal Farm.

Yes, I've read it. It was one of the most damned depressing books I've ever read. I far prefer Animal Farm.

I couldn't finish it. I bailed out when Winston was remembering stealing his little sister's chocolate ration. I prefer Animal Farm, too. But my favourite dystopian story is V for Vendetta.

I like that one, too. The owner of the comic shop I go to recommended it to me, and I sat and read it while waiting for my car to be fixed.

V was awesome, the character and the movie. If you're into dystopian lit I suggest 'We', by Evgeny Zamyatin? It was originally in Russian but translations aren't too hard to come by, and it started the entire genre.

I thought it was great. Then I read the book, which is far better. They should've left in Finch's acid trip at Larkhill. And not updated it to make it more contemporary.

I've read it, although I freely admit that it was long enough ago that I've lost most of the details beyond Newspeak, Big Brother rewriting history (and policing thoughtcrimes), and Winston (was that the main character's name?) hooking up with what might as well be jailbait that is attracted to him for no visible reason other than Orwell thinking his middle-aged protagonist should be attracting a pretty young thing in the classic male fantasy that permeates most of the world's cultures. Oh, and something about selling out his mother and sister for chocolate.

Because that was the point of the romantic interest: to titillate the male reader, and not to ultimately subvert that same fantasy by having Winston and Julia betray each other after being exposed to room 101. The point wasn't that even love cannot survive the onslaught of Big Brother, no, it was all about satisfying the male gaze.
