You're not, Lexin. I'm pretty big of the 'I don't give a damn' camp too, but mostly, I think this news actually made my day. I hated Michael Jackson. I admit, he was talented, yes, but he was fucked up and possibly a pedo. The first thought I had was, "Maybe his kids will have a chance at a normal life now." Third'd. Yeah, I never liked him and I'm not going to pretend I did just because he's died. I am interested to see what exactly the media'll do though. I feel sorry for his family. His parents and siblings must be devastated, and it can't be easy for his kids, either.

It's not that I don't like his music or his dancing, but he'd been becoming increasingly crazy (but because he was famous, he got to be called eccentric). He didn't always bother to show for concerts, he looked absolutely terrible, and he just gave off this whole air of "I'm too good for you". Furthermore, he was well past his peak. There's no proof he was a child molester but I wouldn't be surprised if he was. I can sympathise his life was no bed of roses, but it doesn't excuse everything he did, doesn't remove the fact that he WAS rich and effectively threw his money away on frivolities, and I would NOT be surprised if he had died of a drug overdose. Yesterday I was in town and EVERY-BLOODY-WHERE I went they were playing his music. Especially in the music stores. And in the LOCAL FUCKING PAPER, we were supposed to be bemoaning his death.

It's going to get worse for the kids...almost everything of value is going to be taken by his creditors (I think he was around half a billion dollars in debt at the time of his death). Jackson left his share of rights to The Beatles music catalog to Sir Paul McCartney, but because there's a $200 million loan using them a security that will be tied up in court for years. Not to mention the rights to his own music, likeness and image...that's probably another $400-500 million there that will be auctioned off to pay creditors.

Which sucks, considering his tours - according to the news - were slated to earn him $400 million.

| I agree with various people - MJ was massively in debt, but continued to live as if he wasn't. Kind of like the Bohemian Lifestyle reversed.
You know, the Bohemian Lifestyle is when you live like you're poor, but you're very rich.
And then MJ lived like he was very rich, but he was actually flat broke. He even worked like he was rich - like he didn't NEED to go on tour and stuff, just because he didn't want to.

| You want to reiterate that one more time for us, Harley? I don't think I got it. You mean... he was poor, but lived his life as if he were rich? He WASN'T rich, he was poor, but he still spent a lot of money? He was a poor person living beyond his means? Like, the opposite of being rich and acting poor? | |

I think it was more along the lines of a destitute person living as though he were wealthy. It's quite different from the alternative, where a well-to-do person will live in a state of poverty.

It happens a lot. I've known several people living off credit cards and the like, well beyond their actual means. It usually comes crashing down once the credit card companies start getting pissy.

When? Where? The only example that even comes close to looking like he was 'too good' for other people would be his earnest conviction that being in public too long would get his kids kidnapped, and that was more paranoia than anything else. Really, if there was any one thing that Michael cared more about than his children and his music, it would be his fans. They're all he really had in the end. As for the money spending issue, I think the main thing setting him apart from most legitimately poor people who live outside their means is that Michael actually had money, and lots of it. He just spent it all willy-nilly like a small child would because, mentally, he never really aged past 5.

| Sigh. I always felt bad for Michael Jackson. The man was seriously screwed up. He needed mental help. Because he was a celebrity, everything he ever did was blown out of proportion and scrutinized beyond belief. I'm relatively certain that he wasn't a child molester: he was just so mentally damaged that he found it easier to play with young boys than deal with adults. | |

Okay, I can see Phelps and his ilk dogpiling Jackson. But what the hell did Farrah Fawcett do to earn their ire? *reads* So if I read that correctly "Lots of people had the hots for Jackson and Fawcett. They did nothing to stop this. Therefore HELLFIRE (n. the daddyfucker)?"

| Fred Phelps' activity is perfectly logical.
He wants attention, therefore he does what he thinks will get him attention.
He's like PETA or a reality show star.
