It was spectacular--screeching fundies, angry progressives, and a professor who honestly seemed to relish the fact that he'd stirred up the mother of all hornet's nests by stating that Paul, rather than being sainted and suffering, was instead kin to the Herodians and traveled pretty freely because of it. Not true. Corinthians straight up says that the "homosexual offenders" will not inherit Heaven. (Cor 6:9-10)

I'm not a Bible thumper, but Leviticus isn't the only book that speaks out against homosexuality. Jesus never said anything about homosexuality, it's just that others did.

Maybe it's just me, but there seemed to be a look of longing on Phelps' face when he first saw the Sodomobile.

It wasn't just you. I've long suspected Phelps is so far in the closet he's discovered the Forbidden Zone. Why wouldn't he look longing? These young men and women are free of his hateful prejudices. They're obviously enjoying themselves. I imagine they sleep a great deal better at night than he does, and they don't live their lives in constant fear that God is going to strike them dead if they do or say the wrong thing. They're free in a way that he could be, if he'd just reject his hate. According to the Bible, having the Lord as your savior is supposed to be a joyous thing. Even if he prefers the Old Testament God to Jesus (and I'm sure he does), he can't be so delusional as to not realize that if anyone's going to end up in Hell, it will be him. He's violated every tenant in the Bible, starting with "Love thy neighbor as thyself' and working his way through "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" He hasn't killed anyone yet, but I sometimes wonder if it's just a matter of time before he loses it completely and tries.

I actually have trouble watching him because he sounds just like my maternal grandfather, who was a religious whacko to the nth degree, and who I thankfully had little contact with, mostly because my mother hated his guts. As well she might.

There was a kid at another school in my district who committed suicide after being bullied for a long time about being gay. To make matters worse, it wasn't just homophobic students who were bullying him--a teacher joined in, too.

I can't say I know exactly how you feel, but that's the first time I have ever actually cried while reading an online article. I come from a fundamentalist Christian family. My aunt is lesbian and my mom pretty much thinks she is insane and needs therapy, when in reality she is one of the most sensible people I know (well, beyond her being into acupuncture, but meh, I'll let her have that). What I thought was really horrible was that when she broke up with her partner of ten years, nobody helped her find a new apartment or gave her a shoulder to cry on or anything. It was just like my other aunt didn't exist anymore and that was that.

Why am I no longer a fundamentalist Christian? Well, y'see, I took this class where they made me read the Bible cover-to-cover... and I found out it simply didn't match up with what they were saying it said. So now I'm just plain Christian. I wish I could get people to just read the Bible without any preconceived notions, while taking into account why the different books were written and who the authors were and what their culture was. What we have is an account of what God did, written by fallible humans. It's just as simple as that. I guess maybe the idea that you have to think to be a good Christian is threatening to some people.

Interestingly enough, the Bible actually has advice for Christians who are being 'harassed' (not that I think any of the supposed suicides were ever 'harassed' for being Christians by anyone, gay or straight).

This is repeated several places in the New Testament, including the Book of Luke.

And Callista, you hit the nail on the head in your last paragraph. The problem is that most fundamentalist's take the Bible as being the literal word of God, as given to men they consider prophets but who, in the end, were simply human like everyone else.

I'd like to point out that many of those people claim to be taking the Bible "literally", but they are actually reading the footnotes of the Scoville Reference Bible and taking them as the Word of God.

The Scoville Bible is a favorite of rapture-any-moment-now nutjobs all over the US, the source of many popular myths about the antichrist and the so-called End Times.
