| Subject: "Watchmen 2" could be in the works. Comic nerds burn down Dan Didio's office. Wed Feb 03, 2010 4:01 pm | |
| Okay I made up the second half of that headline but I wish it were true. This is utter bullshit. - Quote :
- Why hasn’t there ever been second series of Watchmen comics? It’s not as though Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons actually own the characters. Well, apparently, any talk of a sequel had been squashed, time and again, by Paul Levitz, former president of DC comics.
He was very protective of the title, even denying the creators of the tie-in videogame to invent any new material at all. This was sacred stuff to him.
For those of you not in the know, Levitz is a pretty chill guy. He was responsible for hiring Moore in the first place and pretty much revamped the entire super hero genre during the 1980s and is now currently back to writing comics. Which would be great if not for who stepped up to take his place. - Quote :
- ...it seems that Dan DiDio, SVP-Executive Editor of DC, has made it his mission to realize not only a sequel series but also several prequels. Why? I suppose he’d say Why Not? And there’s good reason to believe they’ll be coming to screens as well as pages, too.
This is where you can start frothing. Didio is turning into quite the super villain, out to ruin everyone's fun and take massive shits all over what is considered one of, if not the greatest comic of all time. - Quote :
- I understand that both Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons have to be offered first refusal before any of these titles could be published. But if they don’t want to work on them themselves (and Alan Moore is never going to agree), DiDio has been sounding out people who might be willing to take on the task. While some creators are reticent, the argument goes if there are a number of Watchmen spinoff projects, any blame or shame can be spread on many shoulders. The sales are expected to be massive, whatever the hardcore fanboy reaction and such expected sales benefits will be shared amongst the creative teams.
This is career ruining stuff, so it'll be interesting to see what sort of money grubbing assholes will rise to the challenge. We can only pray that these fail miserably.

You and me both. Didiot is single-handedly ruining DC Comics. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| I saw this on /co/ a couple hours ago and anticipated this thread being made here. And I haven't seen the first movie, nor have I read the comic [don't kill me! ], but from what I've heard of it a sequel would seem pretty ridiculous. | |

| What could they possibly do in the sequel? A parade of reaction faces as people read Rorschach's diary while Adrian summarily dismisses it? - Spoiler:
The heroes have been beaten. Utterly. Nite Owl and Silk Spectre are plebeians, Dr. Manhattan has fled the galaxy and is not coming back, while Adrian's company is rebuilding what was destroyed. That's it. There is no sequel. It was meant to be a complete story, and it is.

| This sounds like something far worse than normal sequelitis. Bleh. Watchmen isn't my cup of tea, but I've heard a lot of good things about it, and it's a shame that this sort of thing would happen to it. | |

| Would that even... function? I'm not sure how they'd go about doing a sequel. I haven't seen the movie, but are things different enough in the movie that it would work, working from the movie-verse? Because from reading the comics I'm not getting a sequel-goes-here vibe. At all.
I guess the prequel idea could at least function, but... why?

| Well - and don't burn me - if Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons decided to do something else with the Watchmen characters, like stories set around the passing of the Keane Act for instance, or fleshed out the origin stories of the characters, I'd read it. But only if the original creators had near-total control over it. | |

| . . . Cyberwulf, have you got any more of that damp cocaine? I think Mr. DiDio is due for a care package soon.
Seriously. WHAT. Yes, it would make loads of money. Why in God's name does DC need more money? Did they lose a big bet to Nick the Greek and now they have to keep their characters from getting their thumbs broken?
There is a point at which a story is finished. Some stories take longer than others, but sooner or later, a self-contained story is going to be over and done with. Every writer knows this: after a certain point, you just cannot push the story any farther, or it stops working. Watchmen, love it or hate it, was something unique, and that uniqueness was part of the reason why it had such an enduring impact. You can't just throw that away and order up a sequel.
I admit I have a weakness for what-happened-after fanfic, especially if they manage to bring Rorschach back. But that's fanfiction. Actually trying to shoehorn something like this into canon would be hugely disrespectful to the creators, to the story, and to pretty much everybody who ever valued the art of proper storytelling. Thou shalt not.

| I just can't think of anything they could do that wouldn't read like bad fanfiction, character derailment and canon rape and everything. A prequel could maybe work, but I still don't see the point. Other than the money, that is. | |

eh kills crappy watchmen spinoffs and doesn't afraid of anything. Colour me not that surprised. DC (and Marvel) are the masters of driving franchises and characters into the ground with industrial machinery. At least we have the lulz of Alan Moore's head exploding and the inevitable epic WallBanger/SoBadItsHorrible entries on TV Tropes to look forward to.

God, no. Have you seen what Alan Moore did to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? He got rid of all the characters anybody ever liked, gutted the "famous literary characters team up" idea, and turned it into a musical to the tune of Threepenny Opera. I'd be perfectly happy if DC threw the Watchmen universe to Neil Gaiman or Peter Milligan, but I don't want to see Moore slaughter another one of his babies out of spite.

| This can only end in pain. I can't think of a single story that ended more appropriately than Watchmen. And on top of that, DC is already given Grant Morrison free reign to play with a Watchman-inspired universe of Charlton characters in his upcoming Multiversity book. This seems like comic book moneygrubbing at its worst. | |

| I told the Manthing about this. He actually did a near slo-mo turn and look of horror. I don't think he was acting.
I can see how a half-decent prequel could be made, but IT ENDED LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE ENDED OHGODFDJKSLA;FJDSKL;FROTHINGNERDRAGE

| Watchmen 2? Its been done. Dr. Manhattan went back in time (he does weird things like that you know) and did what he said he was going to do. He created a new world, a new race in his own image (blue and glowing), a valuable element that was worth stealing from his new people, and then settled down as the planetary intelligence for a few thousand years to wait for humanity to develop space travel and act like the greedy scum they are. Then he'd get a chance to kick their asses good like a proper savior god should. It's called Avatar. | |
