| While wandering around the SA forums, I found this info (spoilered because long post is LOOONG): - Spoiler:
News from the last 12 hours or so:
- A picture of what is claimed to be a huge opposition rally in Isfahan is being widely circulated on Twitter
- Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni has condemned the protests as "vandalism", according to state TV, but also endorsed the guardian council's decision to conduct a partial recount of Friday's ballot.
- The US state department requested Twitter delay it's maintenence until 1.30am Iran Time last night so not to interrupt one of the protesters main forms of communication.
- More protests were arranged for today, starting at 1:30pm BST, 8:30am EST, 5:30pm Iran Time in Tir Square.
- The blog of the reformist Mohammad Ali Abtahi is no longer available. In his last post he described the election as a "swindling". Abtahi, who was a senior adviser to the former president, Mohammad Khatami, was arrested yesterday.
- Tehran's governor general Morteza Tamaddon is quoted as saying: "Seven people were killed and 29 injured during the illegal rally on Monday."
- Iran's Foreign ministry has summoned European ambassadors to criticise their "interventionist and impudent" stances on the disputed election, according to the state news agency ISNA.
- Proxy websites are apparently being cracked down on, meaning people are using anti-filtering software which not as many people know how to use.
- The Revolutionary Guard, an elite military force answering to Supreme Leader, warned bloggers to remove any materials that "create tension" or face legal action, AP reports.
- The US-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran says there has been mass arrests of leading reformists including politicians, intellectuals, activists and journalists. It is getting reports that in the city of Tabriz more than 100 prominent figures have been arrested.
- Mir Hossein Mousavi's website, Kalemeh, has carried a statement from him urging relatives of protesters killed or injured in street clashes to go to attend a peaceful demonstraton tomorrow, which he will lead, writes Robert Tait. The venue of the planned demonstration has not been disclosed. But street demonstrations held to mourn the dead were one of the motors that gave momentum to the 1979 revolutionary movement.
- The man who was believe to have leaked the election results showing Ahmadinejad coming third, Mohammad Asgari, who was responsible for the security of the IT network in Iran's interior ministry, was killed in an apparent yesterday in Tehran.
- A key Iranian figure, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has called an emergency meeting of the Assembly of Experts. The Assembly of Experts appoints the Supreme Leader, and is apparently the only group who can remove him, some people say this is Rafsanjani's attempt to exert pressure on Khameni to drop support of Ahmadinejad.
- Robert Fisk reported that Iranian soldiers kept a group of plainclothes paramilitaries away from Mousavi supporters, with Mousavi's supporters shouting 'thank you, thank you' to the soldiers.
- In another sign of the internet crackdown YouTube has announced that it is getting only a tenth of the traffic it usually gets in Iran despite being deluged with videos from the country. It also denies censoring the videos.
- The speaker of Iran's parliament, Ali Larijani, has ordered an investigation into "unfortunate incidents" at Tehran University when a dormitory was raided by the police, according to Press TV. There is video of the damage caused here.
- Pro-Ahmedinejad photoshopped to make it look bigger.
- Mousavi reportedly urging protesters to wear green during the Friday prayers.
- Several players in Iran's national football team took the field wearing green armbands - signifying support for Mousavi, who adopted green as his campaign colour - for the World Cup qualifier against South Korea today
Is all this true? If so, then...damn. Fucking insane doesn't begin to explain this shit.

| If there's going to be a public revolution, might as well make it the biggest revolution their country has ever seen to make a real dent and get the assholes out of power.
I hope the protests keep gaining momentum.

| Lembech: Yeah, from what I've been reading all of that is true.
You guys can follow what's going on with Twitter. Search #gr88 or #IranElection. If you have a Twitter, change your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT + 3:30, apparently it makes it harder for the government to find real Iranian bloggers.
If any of you live in New York City, there's a protest going on from I think 6-8 or 7-9 there tonight. If I didn't have finals tomorrow I'd be there.

| As if it couldn't get worse... - Quote :
- As international media outlets are being pushed off the streets of Tehran, the burden of reporting on Iran's post-election crisis is falling increasingly on online channels ranging from blogs and video sites to Twitter and Facebook.
The Iranian government raised the stakes in the Internet battle on Wednesday by spreading the word that online users could face prosecution and even execution for "incitement." Basically, the government is losing the information war (despite all but ordering foreign media out of the country) so they're going to the threats and intimidation.

| I loved this from the BBC's website, "Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the comments as he appealed for an end to protests about election results. He said Western nations were showing "their enmity against the Islamic Republic system and the most evil of them is the British government". " Hooray! My government is especially evil! | |

| There is a protest in response to the Ayatollah's speech tomorrow in Enghelab Square. I am hoping things go well for them, but I'm concerned they will not. | |

| The protests haven't stopped. They're getting even crazier. The council of religious leaders isn't sure what to do because if they make concessions, they'll look week, but if they try to squash the protests, things will get uglier. You know how they say people will only put up with shit for so long? Well, this is starting to look like a real-deal rebellion. Now I'm all for the Iranian people finally taking control, but now that it looks real, this is really scary. | |

Oh yeah, I forgot about our magical bad guy seeking missiles only hurt bad people and spare good people and puppies which make it perfectly safe to conduct a massive bombing campaign in a city crowded with the people we're allegedly trying to help.

| If you could put the sarcasm aside for just two seconds, Lysander, let me explain something to you: if war does break out between the US and Iran and any civilian casualties are incurred, most of the blame will rest squarely on Ahmadinejad's shoulders. He's a paranoid psychopath who wants to hang on to power at any cost, even if that cost includes the lives of thousands of his own countrymen. He's Iran's answer to Saddam and Hitler. | |

Yeah, we can bomb whoever we want, civilians or not, because they'll just blame a figurehead that isn't bombing them! DUH LYSANDER HOW CAN YOU BE SO DUMB AND SARCASTIC. :downs:

| Well, it's not like being nice to our enemies ever accomplished anything. Obama tried to reach out to Tehran, and Tehran responded by basically telling him to drop dead. | |

Actually, that's not what you were saying. You were saying, "Hey, let's not wait until there's an actual war. Let's just start killing people now. Sure, the people we want to help are peaceful protesters, but I'm sure they actually want us to start blowing their country up post-haste. With them still in it." Gee, and why not? It worked out so well for us last time.
