The beating at the door shook him from his absorbed state: "What're you doing in there?"

"Nothin'!" he yelled back, scrabbling in panic to pull up his shorts with one hand while trying to push the head of the My Little Pony toy back into place with the other. "Don't come in!"

"Just remember to put your sheets in the wash, honey." came the voice through the door, "I'm just starting another load."

"Okay!" He replied, relieved but still cautious to take any further action until he heard footsteps on the stairs. Turning back to the screen he popped the doll's head back off and worked it back into place. He hit F5 again. Someone must have replied by now...

You have a point... people do hate change, and I got the impression the Republicans were much less awful when he was in his prime.

The worst of it is, there's actually a rather successful niche in my country where he could fit. We have both 'Socialists' (the pinko ones) and people well to the left of them. As the former ('s direction) are moving to the right, the latter are gaining success.

Pity the States don't have either. (No, the Democrats are a little more to the right, although our Socialists look like they're on the way to joining them. It might have already happened, actually.)

Oh, and I heard Republicans used to be leftists at some point (late 19th-very early 20th century?), and then they switched with Democrats. Hence the reversed color scheme between US and European parties.

The Republican party started with Lincoln. So if you consider keeping the Union together through a meat grinder of a war and consequently freeing the slaves and getting shot in the head to be leftist, then yeah, they were leftist. The modern day liberalism in this country started in a weak form with Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft's "Trust Busting." Woodrow Wilson grew it with his "progressivism" and League of Nations horseshit. Franky Roosevelt was the one who created Babby's First Welfare State, Lyndon Johnson expanded it immensely, and Jimmy Carter further expanded it. All of these people were Democrats. In addition to them, there were some Democrats who actually reduced the leftist welfare policies. JFK cut taxes on "the rich" by a tremendous amount. Bill Clinton passed (read: had shoved down his throat) sweeping welfare reform that stopped paying wastes of organs money for being wastes of organs.

Back in the start of the Republican party (Civil War), pretty everyone was small government (at least compared to today). Now, the Republicans are small government in the sense that they at least want less government meddling than the Democrats. The Republicans, while more left today than they have been in at least certain times passed, have never been left of the Democrats.

PS: Socialists are drugged out morons about as separated from reality as the Houston Astros are from the playoffs. The only difference is that the Astros know they'll never have a winning season again, while Socialists actually believe they understand how anything works.
