Early on, the Republican party was quite progressive. The first Republican president signed the Emancipation Proclamation. He also saw the country through a very ugly civil war. Sadly, shortly into his second term, he was shot in the head by an actor who thought this would help the South rise again (it didn't). I am referring, of course, to Abraham Lincoln.

As much as I hate on Republicans these days, I really do like the old-school ones. Lincoln and Theo especially.

In the 1950's, the Democrats realized they were losing power, because they were the home of the bigots. So they kicked out/ignored the racists, who made their own political party. Then came along Kennedy and and Johnson, and they reinvented the Democrat's image as being in support of Civil Rights legislation. Then Johnson's "Great Society" legislation kicked in, and won back a lot of lower-class voters.

Then Nixon happened, and the Republican party was decimated. They tried to focus on those Damn Commies but that didn't work. Then Regan focuses on rebuilding it through aggressive anti-communist stance, trickle down economics, and the "moral" stance. His version is what the politicians are still clinging to today. What's left are the people believing that they are defending the morals of a decaying society... they were mostly very Christian and continually pandering to the demagog mega-church owners who poured in the money.

Now they are driving everyone out with their religious bigotry. Either the moderates/smart ones will chase out the extremists and reinvent themselves, or everyone will join the Democrats/Libertarians, and they will be out of power shortly.

That was a real impressive string of words right there, but let's get back to reality. Nixon didn't "decimate" the Republican party. After Nixon, the Republican Ford was President. And then after for years of Carter fucking up every single aspect of the job as a Democrat, the Republicans won the Presidency back with Reagan, and held it for twelve years. Reagan fixed the economy through capitalism and less government micromanaging.

Presently, the Republicans (at least the national platform) aren't too strongly focused on God and Christianity. It's all about economics and fiscal policy. If they're still "pandering" to Christian "demagog mega-church owners" they wouldn't have nominated a fucking Mormon, you stupid fucking assclown. Stop listening to your Women Studies professors, they don't know shit about shit.
