I admit, I'm a World of Warcraft junkie. I've read the books, I've learned the lore almost by heart (only a few points of it I'm still not quite familiar with) ,I'm addicted to the MMO and love it to pieces, hell, I can't sneeze without banging heads with a decent Machinima.
But there are some people who don't think I should be playing World of Wacraft. Sure, it hasn't helped me find a job, and it doesn't help the friends I make live on the other side of the country (or even in Canada), but that's beside the point.
What could make World of Warcraft so vile and detestable that everyone loves it?
SATAN!
Well, according to 4gospeltruth, anyway...
Every step of the way through this video I was restraining myself from screaming at my computer screen out of frustration and rage at the amount of ignorance displayed.
It's truly sad when someone accuses a harmless MMO of ties to the occult with nothing but elements off one site taken out of context.
But wait, there's more! This is a 4-part series! I couldn't even get through the second video before wanting to fly into a homicidal rage!
Part 2!
Part 3!
And part 4!

For a godawful website, can I just nominate the WoW forums and exit quietly? Such a vile pit has yet to be found elsewhere in this dimension.

DUDE, another FFXI player. That game consumed like 3 years of my life before I finally found myself getting sick of waiting around for parties. (This was just before they introduced the Level Synch feature. I got back into it a little bit after that, but I found that the spark had gone for me, so I sort of drifted away again.)
But yeah, I tried WoW out a bit after I got fed up with FFXI, and what I couldn't believe was how EASY WoW was compared with FFXI. WoW is like a game for babies compared with FFXI.
I still play WoW a bit now because I like that I can actually do shit on my own, and not have to wait around for 2 hours just to get into a fucking party to level. But still, FFXI > WoW.

Y'know, I've never visited the forums, but I can totally believe that. Wherever on the Internet you gather gamers in large enough numbers, their inner assholes are unleashed to run rampant.

Game that was left so the developers could make a very poor sequel was superior to game that is still active and supported and is infact still bringing in new players, sound logic as always Michael.

I played WoW on a friends subscription, and I thought it was boring as fuck.
I began as a literal troll (that was my race), than got bored and became an internet troll as soon as I got this cat pet that followed me around and was only visible when I wanted it to be. So, I spent about 15 minutes running around and asking random people if they wanted to see my pussy. As soon as they would inevitably say "yes", I would make the cat appear and watch them "HARBLEGARBLELAJFKALJF:AOI!!!" at me for awhile. It was funny as hell. But than, I was drunk and severely lacking sleep so there you go.

It's funny seeing people using WoW's popularity to defend it on a board where Twilight is considered tripe and its overwhelming number of fans are brushed off as brainless sheep.

The difference between World of Warcraft and Twilight, Haz, is that with World of Warcaft, we don't have sparkling vampires. Also, the canon is written well.

The difference between WoW and Twilight is that you like WoW, so you feel a need to defend it with arguments you'd never let fly elsewhere because it's easier than attacking the criticisms people who don't like it have.
(PS, guess how many Twitards brag about sparkling vampires like it's a good thing and think the canon is written well.)

Actually I think the difference is that if a MMO is more popular there are more people to play it with, so it kind of makes a huge difference in how much fun you have.

This is very true. Add in the fact that solo play is possible, it means that if you only have an hour to play WoW you can actually get stuff done, unlike FFXI where it could take more than that hour just to form your party. (Yes, I am another person here who has played both and enjoyed both.) There was no solo content in FFXI after you reached level 10 or so because enemies just became too strong to fight on your own.
And Alhazred, do you have some specific issues with World of Warcraft's story that you can point out? I mean so far in this thread therein lies the difference between the forum mocking Twilight and not doing so for WoW, we all have very specific things about Twilight that add up to it being the worst piece of literature ever written, whereas you've brought no such arguments against WoW.

If you want to have a WoW flame war I can certainly type up a wall of text about why I think it's ass, but it's still a double-standard to pitch WoW's popularity as a sign of quality (which is exactly what Somath was doing) and then further defend it with subjective opinions. "The canon is written well" is the same thing Twilight fans say. We disagree and are secure in the knowledge we're correct; the only difference is that more people here like WoW and subjectively think it's good, so all of a sudden it's "yeah, but WE'RE smarter."
Popularity is not a measure of quality, period.

The issue I have with that idea is that there's a definite cut-off point where more players doesn't make the experience any better. It's no fun to run around an empty server, but playing in a completely jam-packed one isn't much fun either. And, besides, you're never actually going to be playing with 15 million people at once.
The real benefit popularity brings to MMOs (and video games, and entertainment media in general) is the money it generates to maintain and develop it, but that's still not a way to judge quality.

To those who used to play FFXI, they recently introduced something called Abyssea (they've also raised the level cap from 75 to 90).
In these areas, an alliance can easily get 200,000 exp an hour. If you don't understand how broken that is, the rest of this rant will be lost on you.
Part of Abyssea exp is opening chests that dead mobs leave behind. Typically these "Box Bitches" are low level jobs leeching exp. It's very possible to take a job from 30 to 70 in one party.
It used to take some effort (a little bit too much sometimes) to level a job. You had to get a party, work for 20,000 exp an hour (this was actually improved from the days where 10,000 an hour was something be VERY proud of), level up, go obtain any necessary gear, and repeat the process. Now it's become a mindless, challenge-less process of trading a key to a box for two and a half hours. There's never a need to get gear between levels 30 and 75, because in one party of you doing nothing, you skip those levels. Acquiring gear was part of the fun.
They realized FFXI was a little TOO tedious and time consuming sometimes, and massively overreacted, making having a high level job something a drooling monkey can achieve.
Um, WHAT, exactly, was the topic of this thread? I forget.

Well, sure. Obviously it happens a lot (though I don't have the patience and stomach to search through YouTube's religious cesspool to find it) but when it's presented in such a way that takes elements of the game out of context and just focusing on how those elements are, "harmful and contribute to the occult and demon worship", I'm gonna stand my ground, hold my flaming crowbar high and shout, "Bitch you are wrong!"
There's about as much point to claiming WoW is Satanic and present half-assed facts to back up your claims as there is to having a spy satellite over Canada.

Uh, Somath wasn't making the argument that WoW is good because it's popular; he was pointing out that it's still active and technically supported, while FFXI is dwindling and the people responsible for maintaining it have moved on to working on FFXIV instead.
Can't speak to the truth of it since I've never played any of these games, but it's still not straight-up popular = better.

^ More like a philly with provolone cheese loaded with caramelized onions.
...Excuse me.
EDIT: As for FFXIV, I couldn't attest to the quality of it either way, as I know of no one that has a computer capable of running that graphic Godzilla. Srsly, people with fairly decent computers can't run it.
EDIT EDIT: I was looking forward to leveling MNK the real way. Now I'll have to Abyssea whore to 82 in one day. They could fix it if they put a minimum level required to enter Abyssea, sort of like the 65 minimum to enter Dynamis. At least that way you could level as you used to before the TNLs just get insufferably large.
