I've read an article or two.

It's fun to see how long I can go without RAGEQUIT. It's usually a couple paragraphs.

Now explain to me how detailing how fat people are fat because fatties gonna fat is somehow trolling.

I've sat and stared at the computer for about a half hour now, trying to figure out the best way to say what I think, without pissing off an inordinate amount of people... Clearly, I've put far too much consideration into this.

I come from a family of large, overweight women (I think I'm about 40-some pounds over my "target weight" now). They had mostly all been stay-at-home mothers or wives who cooked and baked and didn't do much else of anything. The men all worked physically demanding jobs and, thus, weren't overweight. That said... even though his delivery was brutal, I agree with a lot of Mikey's points. (braces for hatred)

It's pretty easy to see that diet is the main contributor in our case, because two women (my mother and great-aunt) vehemently went against our family stereotype and are freaking beanpoles. Comically... they complain that, because of this, they don't have the stereotypical huge bust that the rest of us have. That aside, both went to the gym and ate a lot of what I call "rabbit food". Yes, it may have been harder for them to lose weight than someone from a typically healthy, skinny family.... but they did it. They continue to do it.

For the genetics argument... I wonder how much is really genetically programed and how much is just how we're raised. Seems to me that larger families tend to eat foods higher in fat content, sugar content and lower in most of the vitamins. They also seem to be the families that sit around the TV for family time, rather than going out and playing a game of badminton (hell, I don't know).

Yes, some people have thyroid problems... Yes, some people try and try to lose weight but just don't seem to drop a pound for weeks... But some people prefer a quick and cheap McDonald's triple cheeseburger over a garden salad. On that note: ever notice how hard it is to try and lose weight when you don't make money enough to go grocery shopping at Whole Foods?

I'm not trying to downplay anyone else's hardships with weight-related problems... I've had a lot, if not most of them, myself. I just know that mine come from my own choices that I wasn't willing to change when I was younger. Hell, I still hate running and love curly fries.

I'm somewhat porky at the moment, because being physically disabled AND mentally ill (panic disorders SUCK) limits my ability to exercise. However, that does not absolve me of the responsibility to do everything I can possibly do to keep myself from morphing into Fatty McFatfat. I recognize this and have asked my doctor for help keeping my weight down to compensate for my limited mobility. No group is more hypersensitive, irrational, illogical, detached from reality and pisses me off more than the "fat acceptance movement". ESPECIALLY that dickhead Kevin Smith. If you find yourself raising a media stink about an airline not giving you two seats on an aeroplane, you need a serious attitude adjustment. You do not need two seats on a plane, YOU NEED TO LOSE SOME GODDAMN WEIGHT.

Regarding the original topic: on one hand, the police could definitely rely on their fancy toys a lot less, especially since people have died from the irresponsible use of said toys. On the other hand, that kid deserved what she got. You're a kid, do as you're fucking told - ESPECIALLY BY THE POLICE - or face the consequences.

EDIT: Also, it begs the question of why she wasn't medicated that day. My understanding of public schools in America is that they get rather persnickety about that sort of thing.

You're right about this. The average adult needs 1800-2000 calories a day. That many calories of junk food costs roughly $5-$12, depending upon where you get it and what you eat. There are gyms, but they cost money, and when money is tight, guess what? People don't buy gym memberships. Add in the fact that many schools have cut P.E. and recess in favor of teaching to those stupid standardized tests (often because of No Child Left Standing), and those that still have recess have removed a lot of playground equipment for fear of lawsuits--and the problem with obesity starts very early.

A large bag of beans is $8 and will last a few weeks. A 10lb bag of potatoes is $2-6.

It would last about a week, given the time anyone has to make food with these. Which is another problem entirely.

I hold in my hand a thingy of oats. "Thingy" is a technical term people who are physically superior to you use to measure amounts of oats.

Anyway this thingy has "About 30" servings per container. Each serving is 150 calories. That's 4500 calories in on Thingy. This Thingy couldn't have cost me more than $5 (I don't remember the exact amount). I got this Thingy at Wal-Mart. These oats taste like chewing on mushy cardboard, but that's why you get a $3 wad of frozen raspberries to mix in with it. This $3 wad lasts me about half a thingy.

My point is, it's not very expensive to eat reasonably healthy. Just get "scratch" ingredients from Wal Mart (Great Value brand junk is the same junk as the "Name Brand," just a buck cheaper. The bigger problem is finding 15 minutes to clap some of this shit together.

I was trying to avoid this, but the thyroid keeps being brought up and I've got to have my say.

Five months ago, I was jogging. Had been for a few years, now, off and on. Enough to have an endurance built up, is what I'm saying. I was even working my way up to being able to jog up the shallow side of the hill on our street, and halfway there. Then one night, mom and I were out and started running. I had to stop way before her, and seconds later thought for sure I was having a heart attack, seriously worrying as I was only 26 at the time. So, I rested for a bit, the pain stopped and I went on with my life. A few nights later, I was sleeping on my right side but woke up to find the entire left side numb. Naturally, this terrified me and I wound up at the ER, where I was diagnosed as dehydrated and anxious, drugged up and sent home. I went back several more times for basically the same thing and finally over at the poor people's clinic (which is all I can afford) was diagnosed as having an underactive thyroid. Now, on my many trips to the ER, my heart, cholesterol and blood pressure all checked out ok. I was having spells where I woke up in a panic because my breathing stopped, but despite going for nearly a week without sleep, I couldn't get recommended for a sleep apnea test because at 5'3 and between 155-160, I was informed that I wasn't obese enough to have it. So, basically, the extra flab around my middle hadn't made me unhealthy.

So, after being on the generic thyroid meds for awhile, I could breathe in my sleep again, but that was about all I could do. I was aching in every joint and going through tubes of Icy Hot like a junkie. Forget jogging, I couldn't even walk on my left side. Meanwhile, the doctor I was seeing upped my dosage, which brought back the chest pains and heart palpitations, then told me this is all in my head and I should be on anti-anxiety meds. I developed a kidney stone, which led me back to the ER where I was by now something of a joke. The day I came in after throwing up for two hours straight, not even able to keep down the pain and nausea meds they gave me for the stone, I was treated to a "look what the cat dragged in this morning" remark and several pointed comments about how often I came in. Turns out my kidney was infected this time.

The one good thing about all this is that I was able to get one of the doctors to recommend me to a specialist, who put me on different medicine. And, guess what? It worked for a couple weeks. At my sister's 16th birthday party I even danced a little. A very little, since my energy levels weren't coming back up in between songs. Fifteen minutes of dancing spread out over 6 hours and I was exhausted by the end of the night. The longer I'm on the medication, the more the feeling of wanting to go curl up somewhere and cry comes back, along with the constant pain. Exercise is getting more difficult and no longer worth the effort, even on my "up" days. I had one yesterday, and couldn't even manage two minutes on the elliptical machine before my heart started pounding and I couldn't breathe. I run out of oxygen just calling my cats in for their supper at night. And no one seems interested in checking further because I'm now in a normal TSH range. But, hey, I've gained maybe two pounds in all this time which means something has screwed up to the point that I can barely gain anymore. I guess that means I'm allowed to eat enough to stay alive, right? And can maybe even have a little bit of junkfood from time to time?

I have to ask, though, Jabberwockee, if your grandmother had been skinny and eating like that would you still have wanted to roll your eyes at her? Or would she have been lucky grandma with the fast metabolism that lets her eat however she wants?

What I find interesting, in terms of people with thyroid disorder, is my mother has a form of hypothyroidism. She also has an eating disorder, but because she's overweight (almost obese, almost), nobody really considers that she has one. She wouldn't eat for a few days and then binge on a bag of chips, then starve herself again. I always knew when she'd be starving because she'd come home with a bag of chips, and while digging around for something to eat I'd find it crumpled up in the back with maybe two chips' worth of chip bits in it. Then she'd spend the rest of the day sleeping. It's really quite sad because society says she's fat, she's obsessed with being thin, and starves herself and it slows her metabolism down to a crawl because her body is in survival mode.

She tried those ready-made meals from Weight Watchers and in combination with bagged salad she actually started eating food every day, and at the bare minimum of consuming 1,200 calories a day, she actually started losing weight. Slowly but surely, and she was pretty happy about it.

Basically with this tl;dr story I'm trying to say that maybe, just maybe, our society that makes people think if they starved themselves they'd be thin, it actually ends up doing the opposite.

Basically with this tl;dr story I'm trying to say that maybe, just maybe, our society that makes people think if they starved themselves they'd be thin, it actually ends up doing the opposite.

Well, yeah. You (to dumb it down to 4Chan levels) have to eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight, but you still have to eat consistently.

You technically are starving yourself, but in a slow, controlled manner.

This. And BMI can be misleading, since muscle weighs more than fat, so a person can have a higher than "normal" BMI and not actually be overweight because the extra weight comes from muscle. Judging from what the article said, the girl sounds pretty strong, so she may have a good bit of muscle weight.

@Mooncalf: Again, Mikey said it before I could. At that point, I'd probably be more like "wow, she keeps herself in good enough shape to eat all that junk and not end up huge like I would". The whole point of mentioning that faire visit was to highlight that she was using a legitimate medical problem (that she obviously doesn't have - as say several different doctors, btw) as a self-indulgent excuse for her problem with losing weight. She just eats far too many calories and never moves. I still love her, but I've stopped listening to her complain about her weight, knowing that she isn't doing a thing to try and improve on it.

Now, my father's mother still looks great. She walks with her dog at least once a day, eats healthy portions at mealtimes and takes vitamins from about 10 different bottles. And she's a fair bit older than my mother's mother (the grandmother mentioned above).

@Disco: See, I feel really bad for people like your mother, who have a real problem. The social pressure to be thin can totally override being healthy, which ends up hurting more in the long run. It's great that she's doing the WW thing and getting her desired results, though.
