Thinking has nothing to do with it.

It's a bruised ego. They were seriously embarrassed by this, not because of what he did but because of their response to it. Rather than admit they may've overreacted, though, they're going after him.

And this is going to make them look even worse. I just hope they have the sense to not destroy a young man's life over a prank played on the last day of term.

I mean, criminy, it was probably a dare. And kids do play pranks on the last day of school. And everybody's still rather jumpy about bombs thanks to the media.

Umm, so he was cited for leaving an inflated vinyl balloon in a bathroom stall? I suppose he could be cited for littering, or creating a public nuisance. The article doesn't mention if it was after hours so I can only assume he was not breaking and entering. If he was having sex with it I suppose a lewd conduct citation applies. But since it was done in the bathroom alone you really can't go with public exposure. The bomb thing is a bit over the top. Sounds like this was just a way of going after him for punitive purposes. Like citing protesters for littering because you don't like their politics.

Okay, I graduated from a school where lockdowns were a common occurrence, two cops were stationed at the school, and the MPs were constantly patrolling on the base side. And this prank would have gotten the kid's diploma suspended until he completed some suitable punishment over the summer.

I know this because the two years I was there, something similar was pulled every year. When we had riots to worry about (Last one ended with the MPs throwing some kind of gas into the melee and a few morons got TASERed for fighting the cops), nobody gave a damn about a blow-up doll. Or, you know, all the flags getting stolen and replaced with pirate flags.

Sounds to me like this school could use a real emergency to give them some perspective over what actually constitutes as a felony.

When I was at uni, bomb squads and anti terrorist squads were called out for:

1. A stereo speaker someone threw out of a window
2. A James Bond cardboard cutout in someone's garden
3. A bag full of biscuits left at the train station by accident

True story.

On the plus side, it means nobody's gonna dare littering...

What strikes me about this case (because everything else has pretty much been covered) is the blinding idiocy regarding the execution of this prank. Seriously, running away from the school in a hooded sweatshirt and gloves? Way to be subtle about it, dumbass. Chances are this kid's future won't be too bright, felony or no felony.

He didn't want to be caught in the execution of his prank. After all, who does? He certainly didn't do it with the thought in mind that "This will make me look like a terrorist".
