The girl was reportedly raped Sunday by her married cousin and then accused of having an affair with him. His family members beat her, and a village arbitration sentenced her to 100 lashings under Islamic Shariah law.

She fell unconscious after 80 lashings and was taken to the hospital, where she died.

"What sort of justice is this? My daughter has been beaten to death in the name of justice. If it had been a proper court then my daughter would not have died," Dorbesh Khan, the father of Hena Begum, told the BBC.

BBC reports that four people including a Muslim cleric have since been arrested. The district superintendent of police is looking for an additional 14 people involved in the case, including a local teacher.

The High Court outlawed Shariah law punishment last year, but that has not stopped the practice or the resulting fatalities.

I'm glad that people have been arrested over this and didn't just shrug it off. That poor girl, being killed in the name of "justice". It makes me sick.

The man is never responsible in places like these where the rightfully established law falls between the cracks. The woman is always cast as "the evil temptress" and the man is simply the poor innocent who was lured into a deplorable act by no fault of his own. So yes, by how the leaders of this town interpreted justice to suit their own wills, she did rape him and she did cause the affair - it makes no difference that she's 14 and her cousin in the guilty party.

Police are still waiting for post-mortem results, so we don't know if either murder or manslaughter is applicable yet. The 'punishment' was not a murder attempt, so it all boils down to proving direct connection to the beating and her death. Even if this connection is not found, the assailants will still be up for manslaughter. So it is being addressed.

I meant more "how in the world could/did these religious leaders use Shariah law to justify beating a 14-year-old girl to death for being raped". Then again, maybe they just regularly pull decrees/judgments/sentences out of their asses and everyone just goes along, for whatever reason.

That's pretty typical for religious leaders, yeah.

It's not exactly uncommon among secular ones either.
