| There are lots of fics in which somebody goes back in time to save somebody else. Here's one that works: A Little More Time by Jess Pallas. | |

| And here's another. You've seen this before: Member of the Golden Trio refuses to accept a Pyrrhic victory over Voldemort and decides to travel back in time (into his/her own body) to engineer an end to the war that doesn't leave Wizarding Britain in ruins and his/her loved ones dead. You may also have seen the time-traveler-hits-the-wrong-date theme in HP fic. But have you read one in which the time traveler is Ron Weasley? I don't usually rec unfinished fics anymore, having been disappointed once too often, but I think this one is worth watching: Raise the Lion Banner by shrinni. As of this post the latest update was in May 2009. | |

| Hmmm.... Raise the Lion Banner definitely looks promising so far. (The HP fandom needs more Ron-centric fics!) I'm going to keep an eye on that 'un. Thanks for the rec! | |

| Some authors can turn an overworked romantic cliche into a memorably good story. If I told you, "See, in this one he rapes her, but it's really to save her life, and anyway she can't remember anything, but there's a happy ending," you would think it was New Releases material, right?
Nope. It's Hinge of Fate by Ramos. Completed early in 2003, it has most definitely been jossed, but Ramos did a great job filling in the (then) gaps in what we knew about the Wizarding World. Good dialogue, interesting characterization, vividly painted settings, and great battle scenes. There are some problems with the proofreading, however. Ramos has excellent command of English, but some of the canon-specific words appear to have been caught in the spell checker: Imperious, Pomphrey, newts instead of N.E.W.T.s or NEWTs, etc. She also needs a Britpicker.

Whew! For an instant I thought this was about the Knight to King concept, or whatever it was called... I'm definitely bookmarking this one. Thanks to Jenny for the link as well. If anyone hasn't mentioned it before, Minisinoo's Finding Himself is the best 'Cedric Lives' story I've read - not that I've read many. It has a WIP sequel, Dulce et Decorum est.

If anyone hasn't mentioned it before, Minisinoo's Finding Himself is the best 'Cedric Lives' story I've read - not that I've read many. It has a WIP sequel, Dulce et Decorum est. Seconding this one. It's stellar. She also has a number of Cedric-centered short stories, as well as a Cedric/Harry which ultimately does become slash, but still incredibly compelling. (I'm generally not a slash reader, but she's one of the few whose slash stories I will read because she develops the plots and romances so damn well.) Another one is The Room With The Computer, which is a crossover with X-Men. Sounds weird, I know, but it's a terrific fic.

| A writer by the name of Meltha has written a series of one-shots taking place during the Horcrux Hunt in Deathly Hallows, featuring Hermione telling Muggle fairytales to Ron and Harry. The premise is simple: Ron gets curious about the Muggle fairytales that Hermione and Harry mentioned back when they were introduced to Beedle the Bard, and because talking about Horcruxes all the time gets unnerving, asks Hermione to tell him one.Â
What follows is a series of stories where Hermione tells well-known Muggle fairytales to Harry (whose knowledge of them is fairly limited, thanks to growing up with the Dursleys) and Ron (who doesn't know anything about them at all), while Ron provides running commentary where he points out all the logical flaws in the stories and otherwise snarks them in a manner not totally unlike what you might find here on this board.
Hermione freely mixes and matches the different versions of the fairytales as she tells them; in her telling of Cinderella, for example, she mostly keeps to the Perrault version, but includes elements from the Grimm version and even the Disney movie -- so you get the fairy godmother from the Perrault story, but the stepsisters still chop off their heels and toes to make the glass shoe fit like in the Grimm version, and a few plot twists from the Disney version (like Cinderella being locked up and rescued by the mice) make an appearance. She does, however, mention several different versions of the fairytales and often comes up with elaborate theories on why the stories go as they do, sometimes bordering on rants about social classes and feminism, in a very Hermione-ish way.
The dialogue in these are great, and  the Trio are perfectly in character.Â
These are the stories, in chronological order:
Cinder(What-the-Hell?)a Snow Wh(at-Are-You-Kidding-Me?)ite Sleeping Bea(You-People-Are-Mad!)ty Little Red Riding Ho(w-Is-That-Possible?)od Rumpel(Still-as-Crazy-as-Ever!)tskin The Frog Pr(In-What-Way-Does-That-Make-Sense?)nce Rap(solutely-Mental!)unzel Jack the Giant Kill(-Me-Now!)er Hansel and Gr(eat-Now-I’m-Hungry!)etel

| I remember someone linking to a series of character-epilogues on LJ, that took place at King's Cross in the afterlife. I remember endings being written for Snape and the twins, as well, I think as Lupin, Tonks, and others. I also seem to recall Terry Pratchett's Death making an appearance. Anyone have the links to these? | |

| There are some wonderful stories about Tom Riddle Junior on ff net
Rectifier by Niger Aquila Tome Riddle, teacher at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry has developed a new theory on the possibility of travel between Alternate Universes. He travels from an alternative Universe to the Canon universe. At his arrival he meets a strange dark creature. What side will he take in the upcoming war? Will the darkness that he has been fighting all his life, overcome him, and will he be able to go back to his own universe?
Last Chance After his visit to the the orphanage Albus Dumbledore decides to help Tom. Eventually Tom gets adopted by Dumbeldore and they live more or less comfortable together. Tom is very socially award and is reluctant to show or embrace affection. He is a very disturbed boy but you can see the relationship between them develop every day. It is so adorable. It also goes into detail about the War with Grindlewald, which was one of the reasons of why he adopted Tom, so he would not become like him and get seduced by the dark side.
The Right Hand Path What if Merope had lived? What would his life be like? How would he change from the Tom Riddle we knew in Canon? Will his mother's love help him stay on the right path, or will he become Voldemort once again?
I would definitely recommend these fics to any Tom Riddle Fan. They show what Tom would have been like if he had not become Voldemort or if his life had been different.[i]

| The Enemy of Souls is the only Draco/Ginny story that has ever convinced me of the pairing. I stayed up a whole night reading this story because I just couldn't stop. The character development in this one is fantastic, and the fic avoids all the usual clichés found in D/G stories. | |

| Necroposting to post this. FĂ¼r Das GrĂ¶ĂŸere Wohl by Tim the Enchanter (I don't know anything about the author, I just found this using my Google Fu). I found it last night. I find the concept fascinating, and the whole juxtaposition of wizardry bigotry versus Nazi "morals" is intriguing. There are lots of German phrases strewn without, and there's lots of foreshadowing/hints along the way that reveal the larger story, and the I think that the voice is rather strong. It's pre-Hogwarts, by the way. The whole Nazi thing isn't really part of the plot, it's merely a necessary background for the main character. Some of the dialog is stilted, but I'm willing to forgive it because I love the premise. I <3 historical shit. | |

| I kind of love this fic. It's Voldemort/Ginny, but oddly enough it's unrequited on his side. It's actually done pretty well, in a sick sort of way, even though it's hard to imagine Voldemort caring about anyone. | |

| I have been hunting through the HP fandom like mad for the past month-ish, hoping to turn up an old favorite of mine (originally recced on this thread at GAFF or the House, I think) that I had lost the link to. Success, my friends, is a lovely feeling.
Harry Potter and the Enemy Within by Theowyn is a novel-length story that begins after Order of the Phoenix. If I recall correctly, it was written prior to Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, so it's totally AU, and it features, among other things, Harry taking up Occlumency lessons with Snape again. But rather than have the two at eternal loggerheads with one another, Theowyn manages, over the course of the story to develop a mentoring/friendly relationship between the two, which she continues into the sequel, Harry Potter and the Chained Souls. Both are completed.

| Al Potter And His Very Epic Plan by Narysa - Quote :
- Al's dad told him that Slytherin was all right, and that means it isn't fair how people treat them. Al's realized he has to fix this.
It's one of the only Next Generation fics I like, specifically because the kids are not carbon copies of their parents. They also are not perfect. James (Al's brother) hates Slytherin, despite his brother being in it and Harry raising his kids not to be prejudiced against anyone. Al has this great idea to prove that Slytherins aren't evil, but he doesn't really know where to begin. You can see traces of Harry and Ginny in them, but they aren't clones of their parents. The Slytherins are all mainly OC with the exception of Al and Scorpius Malfoy, but they have distinct personalities. It's very humorous and the characters are all believable. You could honestly see them at Hogwarts, learning and living throughout the year. It's in-progress and the author updates regularly.

| Reviving this topic to say that I recently got around to reading The Very Secret Diary—and it was so good that it's been added to my personal canon.
It has also sparked a strange fixation with Ginny/Tom fics, which leads me to recommend Fire & Ice, the best Ginny/Tom fic I've yet been able to find.
... And if anyone knows any other good ones, I would love them for ever. ._.

The Methods of Rationality is a good read (I was sucked in, something that doesn't happen often to me). However, one wonders what the hell it has to do with Harry Potter. There's an anecdote going round about one of our former PMs, who was allegedly a child prodigy. When he was in his early teens and had to give a political speech at a rally in front of the then leader of the Communist Party, Palmiro Togliatti, the latter was impressed, but not favourably. "That's not a kit, it's a midget!" the old leader commented. The same happens here... I understand that the story had to start in Year One, and it's at least believable that Harry could have turned out like this had he been raised by bookworms, but make it an Another Country fanfic or an original story! My suspension of disbelief was leaking oil by the time I reached the last chapter. - Snake Bandage wrote:

I don't think HP is the only fandom where that happens, but the authors of the best-written and more popular fics have this air that their story is not only an alternative but an improvement upon the series/the Deathly Hallows/the epilogue/the canon ships/whatever. That happened with the Nightmares of Future Past as well. It's sad that these people can't invent their own universe and characters, and give us one more book rather than one more fanfiction, good as it may be.

Sypnosis: Life was good for Harry Potter. He had a wife, a good job, and was about to become a father. If only he'd stayed away from that veil, then he wouldn't have to do everything again...
Extremely humourous, and instead of Harry devoting all his effort to save as many people from Voldemort (not that he doesn't do that) he spends most of his time enjoying himself, causing as much havoc as possible, and attempting to lose Gryffindor the House Cup.
