You're assuming an awful lot. It was legal to go around topless where they were demonstrating. So, it wouldn't be much of a stretch at all to say that if people were sexually harrassing them, they could ask the police to intervene. Had the police not bothered to intervene, it would've been more political ammunition for the cause. As it stands, Ty McDowell played it all wrong. - Quote :

Aaaand we're back to the women being at fault for not realising (as if there's any possible way they were unaware) that walking around topless would lead to hordes of creepy fucks following them around with cameras ogling and hooting at them. - Penguin wrote:

Did you miss the part where I said I wasn't defending them, or did you just choose to ignore it? The answer is B.My comment was directed at Adiago, who said: - Quote :

Well, for one thing, she can make sure everyone joining her is on the same page. And, amusingly, whenever I tell people about this shit, the VERY FIRST thing to come out of their mouths is "Well, what were you wearing?" That doesn't happen to me and I've never seen it happen to anyone else. Anime conventions. Go to one. There's something about girls in cosplay that make many guys think it's okay to make sexually harassing comments to them. (ie. A young girl dressed as Chii from Chobits had a couple of much older guys come up to her and one of them said 'I'd like to turn you on the way Chii is'. That's a huge NO no matter what you're dressed as.)

However, I have many friends who like anime more. As such, I see both sides of this deal. Last summer I went to Shotacon with a bunch of my anime fan friends, and it was terrible. All the girls kept getting hit on in the worst way from complete creepers. However, no one touched them. Compare that to the one fantasy convention I went to, and, in my experience, those places are worse. Girls were getting their asses and boobs grabbed by random guys. Guys who used the massive crowd to their advantage so that the girls couldn't see them coming or going. The one episode I remember happened just an hour and a half after we got into the convention. My girlfriend was dressed as a belly dancer, and as we were walking around, all of a sudden, this guy comes up behind her and pulls the tie on her back open. I heard her gasp, and as I turned around I saw her friend sock the perpetrator right in the eye. We all yelled at him and asked what his problem was, and he immediately set off on this whole LS-style rant about how I'm lucky that I have a girlfriend and that not everyone is so lucky and that he should call security. The rampant sexism prevalent at these places is probably the biggest reason I don't want to go to conventions any more. Or a good deal of comic book stores. It's kind of sad, actually. What causes the type of people involved in these things to act like that? I'm not entirely sure. I think it has to do with how geekery is generally a very testosterone-fueled affair, the men get to feeling the women are there for their enjoyment, not their own. I remember the fantasy convention I went to was the biggest sausage-fest I'd been to since Ozzfest.

That doesn't happen to me and I've never seen it happen to anyone else. [/quote] Count yourself extremely lucky. You've already gotten a ton of testimonials from others, for starters. Seriously, it does happen, and it happens often. It's fucking ridiculous, and no fucking fun at all (especially when you factor in the gender invalidation in my case). Also, yes, that sort of behaviour is taught and encouraged. That's no excuse, and it's amazingly sickening. It's not nature, it's just fuckery. As for Doob's evaluation of geek culture, and seeing as I'm a huge nerd, it's really tough trying to endure. If you manage to be around cismen who don't violate touching boundaries, you have to deal with constant stifling sexism and staunchy paper cut out gender roles pressed up against you. I don't think it's anything to do with testosterone as it does build up of grimy hairy stereotypes out of social idiocy and an underlying resentment that gets vented in sexism. I mean, it's an easy breeding ground. Most geek/nerd cismen either are or perceive themselves to be unwanted, misunderstood, outcasted, etc. It's like LS, but not quite as bad. About the most respectful geek I've ever known, who was a nice bloke, just kept bordering on harassment by vying for as much attention as possible as persistently as possible. In conclusion, it happens, it goes unpunished, and it fucking sucks.

It really depends where you are and what the aesthetic is of the people there. In Manhatten, I dont get catcalled and rudely treated. In Jamaica ave, FORGET IT. I can't walk a block without getting leered at. Depends. But yes, its extremely common. Edited: - Mikey Go WOOGA wrote:

Also, there's a reason why those nerds don't ever leave their basements for anything other than those dipshit conventions and there's a reason nobody is upset that that is the case. Several people in very different areas of the world is enough. Several different areas, several different perspectives, same experience. And see, funny thing is, it turns out that many of us actually have lives. Sad but true. I for one, am a full time student who hates being home. I don't need to go to a perv convention to tell you what it's like for young women. I can get on mass transit for a while and just wait for it. Just today, Staten Island ferry, me and my friends were followed around the ferry by a bunch of guys carrying a cooler. Who wants to guess what was in that cooler, folks? Fairlight, I'm going to assume you are a guy, so I'm going to use this ultimate double standard here, and see what happens- you are a guy. You are not going to know what its like to be a young woman because you don't experience what they do. And really, I guess even if you are a woman, the same thing applies, perhaps in a different way. Just because you do not experience something does not mean it doesn't happen often enough to be of distress. For example, I'm a mulatto female- no one really picks up on what race I am, but lets just say that I am black enough to look not-white; and my T&A sufficiently put me in the female category to most people, though my short hair sometimes kinda undermines that, but whatever. I do not feel I experience enough racism or sexism in hiring practices, personal interactions, professional interactions, etc etc to feel that it happens often. But I do not make the assumption that my situation is typical. That's the difference- you simply cannt dust it under a rug and say it doesn't happen just because you don't see it.

I've only ever been to those sorts though, so I don't have much experience outside of them. I've been a member of the Cosfu boards though and they have an entire thread dedicated to horror stories at conventions. One poor girl was raped while she was attending a convention and it really sickens me to think people would try to take advantage in that sort of environment where young children are about. The argument that "girls are asking for it by cosplaying like that" is the exact same argument as any other form of dress - it doesn't matter if they're attending an anime convention or a nightclub - there's no excuse for that sort of sexism or harassment. Cosplaying is a lot like dressing up for a night out with the girls really. Not all of them dress to gain the attention of men, a great majority of them dress to gain the attention and envy of other women. It's a bit crude to say, but it's almost like a pissing contest really.

You're making assumptions based on very little information in the article to support your conclusions, and demanding that everyone see it your way. If they don't, all you have to fall back on are personal attacks because the information to support your argument just isn't there.
