| Catholic Church Gives D.C. Ultimatum - Quote :
- The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.
Let me clarify. D.C. is a full on republic, and the D.C. Council tends to make a a lot of decisions for the city. Since, you know, that's the job they were elected to, and to be honest, D.C. is so used to spending a lot of time screaming at each other over every little thing, they kind of need a council. Now, recently, the D.C. Council decided to recognize gay marriage, and has now taken the logical step of letting gays get married in the capitol. Personally, I suspect there is more than a little thirst for revenue behind this decision, but I'll take what I get. Cue excessive temper tantrum thrown by the Catholic Church, because, oh my gawd, they'd have to acknowledge gays and marry them! (Except they don't, because the Council isn't going to make them do it) Well, they'd still have to acknowledge theyw ere human beings worthy of recognition, and by golly, the Council is asking too much! They'll show them! It should be noted that the Catholic Church in D.C. recieves about $8.2 million in city contracts to help them feed the homeless and provide shelter, provide some health care, and do general Christian good. Well no more! They've decided to do the equivalent of a five-year-old holding its breath, and are now saying they will no longer provide these services with city money. So, because some gays are tying the knot, the Church is no longer going to help a lot of people who have nothing to do with the idea. I want you to grasp this. They are going to stop helping people, because they're not getting their way. D.C. Council's response? - Quote :
- "If they find living under our laws so oppressive that they can no longer take city resources, the city will have to find an alternative partner to step in to fill the shoes," Catania said. He also said Catholic Charities was involved in only six of the 102 city-sponsored adoptions last year.
To paraphrase: "We don't need you quite as bad as you think." So what is their deal? Well, apparently, if they receive city funds, though they would not be required to provoide a ceremony, they would be required to: - Quote :
- She said religious groups that receive city funds would be required to give same-sex couples medical benefits, open adoptions to same-sex couples and rent a church hall to a support group for lesbian couples.
So if they receive city money, they're required to *gasp* not discriminate?! The horror. Oh, and for a bit of humor, the funniest part in the damn article: - Quote :
- "Lets say an individual caterer is a staunch Christian and someone wants him to do a cake with two grooms on top," said council member Yvette M. Alexander (D-Ward 6), the sponsor of the amendment. "Why can't they say, based on their religious beliefs, 'I can't do something like that'?"
... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Then they make the cake anyway and the couple just adds the pieces themselves, you dumb bitch. Ain't no caterer refusing a wedding cake in this economy, hate to tell you. That's a lot of lost business.

Well, that's certainly the version they seem to have read. The one I remember reading was big on the whole "help others" thing, and didn't say crap about the ones you help having to conform to your worldview. A big applause for the D.C Council, anyway.

| Remember whe JFK was running for president, and the bigots kept saying, "He'll take his orders from the Pope!" and JFK was all like," Look, I am an American first. The Pope is not the boss of me"?
It's time to tell the Pope where to get off, again.

| It's not like they'll be damaging the gays who marry with this tantrum. The only ones who get hurt are people who have neither control over the vote, nor any effect by the vote.
Like the Capitol really cares about these social serve things anyway.

Or the part where he destroyed the money changing place in the temple because the money changers were homos? Also, Mexicans fuck up traffic in half of California waving Mexican flags in response to immigration reform, and it's a protest. Gay people parade down main street dressed like this and it's a courageous display of something or other in protest of oppression and whatnot. A bunch of college hippy fuck wastes run Marine recuiters off campus, and it's them exercising their free speech, or some such bullshit. Church decides to stop being friendly to Council because Council slapped them in the face, not it's a temper tantrum. Feeble minded chumpy Capitols fans who are dependent on a massive amount of pills to stay halfway sane and not depressed don't get to be condescending. :psy-4:

You should go and say that to him in his actual birthday thread. He'll be delighted to be reminded of this forum's love for him when the thread makes it back to the top.

You are a different pot of failure. One that badly needs a haircut and is so hideous that one more hit with an ugly stick could potentially bring you full circle.

| Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of stupidity.
If you don't like something, you're free to say you don't like it. But that means that if somebody doesn't like what you say they can tell you so.
Maybe if the Catholic church had involved themselves with backing up more of these society projects, their whining would have more influence.
As it is, they just come off as throwing their regular temper tantrum whenever the government tries to break free from the constraints of th Bible and actually change something.

| You know, when you get right down to it, I don't think the Bible specifically says anything either way about two men or two women getting married. Sure has a lot of polygamy, though. | |
