Catholic Church Gives D.C. Ultimatum

Let me clarify. D.C. is a full on republic, and the D.C. Council tends to make a a lot of decisions for the city. Since, you know, that's the job they were elected to, and to be honest, D.C. is so used to spending a lot of time screaming at each other over every little thing, they kind of need a council.

Now, recently, the D.C. Council decided to recognize gay marriage, and has now taken the logical step of letting gays get married in the capitol. Personally, I suspect there is more than a little thirst for revenue behind this decision, but I'll take what I get.

Cue excessive temper tantrum thrown by the Catholic Church, because, oh my gawd, they'd have to acknowledge gays and marry them! (Except they don't, because the Council isn't going to make them do it) Well, they'd still have to acknowledge theyw ere human beings worthy of recognition, and by golly, the Council is asking too much! They'll show them!

It should be noted that the Catholic Church in D.C. recieves about $8.2 million in city contracts to help them feed the homeless and provide shelter, provide some health care, and do general Christian good. Well no more! They've decided to do the equivalent of a five-year-old holding its breath, and are now saying they will no longer provide these services with city money.

So, because some gays are tying the knot, the Church is no longer going to help a lot of people who have nothing to do with the idea. I want you to grasp this. They are going to stop helping people, because they're not getting their way.

D.C. Council's response?

So what is their deal? Well, apparently, if they receive city funds, though they would not be required to provoide a ceremony, they would be required to:

Well, that's certainly the version they seem to have read. The one I remember reading was big on the whole "help others" thing, and didn't say crap about the ones you help having to conform to your worldview.

It's not like they'll be damaging the gays who marry with this tantrum. The only ones who get hurt are people who have neither control over the vote, nor any effect by the vote.

Also, Mexicans fuck up traffic in half of California waving Mexican flags in response to immigration reform, and it's a protest. Gay people parade down main street dressed like this and it's a courageous display of something or other in protest of oppression and whatnot. If you don't like something, you're free to say you don't like it. But that means that if somebody doesn't like what you say they can tell you so.

Maybe if the Catholic church had involved themselves with backing up more of these society projects, their whining would have more influence.

As it is, they just come off as throwing their regular temper tantrum whenever the government tries to break free from the constraints of th Bible and actually change something.

You know, when you get right down to it, I don't think the Bible specifically says anything either way about two men or two women getting married.
