I've never understood why adding "dwarf" in front of the word planet makes it not a planet anymore. Seriously, Pluto may be a dwarf planet but that still counts as a planet to me.

There's still hell lot of stuff on Earth that's not explored yet(We know shit about ocean's for example), so why is it really so important to go to the moon where people have already been? Since there's probably nothing that'll disappear in a while, but the Earth is different.

Species are going extinct while we are arguing about going back to the moon. There's many species that have gone or will go extinct even before anyone discovers them.

But nobody cares about that sort of thing, because it's not flashy and it's marketing value is very small. There's no funding for exploiting properly our own Earth, why the hell there should be funding for going back to moon?

Oh yes that's brilliant.

"We're taking a hell of a lot of fire from RPGs and technicals! Where's our air support?"
"Scrapped so we can have slightly better vests, Sergeant!"
"What better vests?"
"The ones that didn't get here because the C-17 was cancelled!"
"Fuck!"

"We need to work on the problems we have already" is the dick stupidest thing you can possibly say about exploration and progress, and completely invalidates all your opinions forever about anything as far as I'm concerned. The first lesson anybody with any sense learns from science is that the "useless" shit out at the fringe is where the miracles of ten years from now will come from. Velcro, teflon, kevlar, and plexiglass are solid proof that your pissypants faux-frugalism can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut if you think being in space is too expensive or not applicable to the current state of the world.

And, uh, this.

Ever thought that with all the earthly advances made in medicine and technology because of space programs like Apollo, we might be able to make better technology for exploring the ocean, or drastically reducing the inefficiencies that cause environmental rape and extinction?

Probably not.

Yes, which is precisely why the biggest use of space recently has been ensuring the ability to text "IDK my BFF Jill?" to Rwanda. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

THIS SHIT AGAIN
As has been explained a hundred times why didn't you read any of them god dammit, exploration of space makes life on earth better. It fuels progress and technology in the way any struggle against extremes does.

Aside from that, it really bothers me that people discard moon landings as useless just because they're "flashy." People who say this don't really understand the cultural effect of our visits to the moon. For a long time after we went there, people felt like we could do anything, and so we did. Research in all fields exploded, civil rights and social justice became more important to the people and their governments, and peace happened in places where conflict seemed intractable. Humanity started working the way it knew it should.

Look how the world's been since that shine wore off, and people started worrying about their pocketbook more than their dreams. The past fifteen or so years has been the worst kind of angry stagnation. It seems as though nations in general are turning inwards and sour, and there's nothing left to do but worry. People feel like humanity reached its peak forty years ago, and will not, cannot ever return to that level. So many people today are just looking at the clouds and waiting to die.

Some publicity stunts are damn important. Being on soil no other creature has touched is proof that we're still alive and fighting.

Plus, we've only been to _one tiny part_ of the moon - it's a bloody big hunk of rock. I personally would love to see some expeditions to the poles to look for water, since that would tell us a great deal about the moon's (and the Earth's) formation, and possibly rates of meteor and comet bombardment.

Quoted for truth. And this doesn't just apply to space exploration- this pocketbook nonsense and strict adherence to the status quo has shown children that it's okay to be subpar, prejudiced, narrow-minded and cynical. Look at how the public school systems have gone down the toilet. The United States ranks much lower in math and science than other countries. It used to be number one. No longer are people looking to themselves and trying to make some kind of a difference, they're blaming each other. Failing because you're not paying attention and don't have the initiative? File a lawsuit. It's never an opportunity to better yourself, you're perfect already, with your outward display of material goods as proof of the advancement of technology. Have an iPhone? That's all that matters.

That's what happens when you get a culture where being rich is the only way to be treated like a human being. Really, though, this generation's just completely rotten. No wonder people are just, "looking at the clouds and waiting to die".

No, the culture is "I need a new shiny thing to feel complete." People are still plenty civil to each other. Most people in the US (and developed West in general) have little experience with being treated as less than human.

True, but KGarrett was making it sound like we have a rigid caste system in place. I mean, it's not like you have to earn $100k a year to avoid being spat on and dress in something more comfortable than burlap.

There's also the matter that NASA is at least 10 years behind in analyzing the data collected so far from the various space missions and shuttle launches.

And the reams and reams of data from the Apollo missions that will never be analyzed because it's stored on rolls of magnetic data from 1960's-era computers that NASA no longer has.

In fact, NASA admits that it is this backlog that delayed their detection of the hole in Earth's ozone layer during the 1980's.

So maybe we should spend a little dough to speed up the analysis of what we have now?

Also, Pluto skylined itself with "one of these things is not like the other-" it had a very irregular orbit compared to the other planets, both in terms of how stretched the ellipse was compared to the others, and how it was offset compared to the plane of the solar system.

And if that's not enough, think about it in terms of categories- we have the four inner rocky planets, the four outer gas giants and then, another rocky planet.

What you're failing to account for is that public opinion regards NASA, in much the way it does with any other thing, as a monolithic entity which exists only to launch shit into space. This means that Congress also treats it this way, to appease said opinion. When NASA is not launching shit into space, it gets absolutely fuck all for funding, and will never get more until it launches shit into space again. The backlog you speak of could only be lessened by showing the people who matter, that is to say, the dumbfucks who pulled funding out of NASA in the first place, that it remains an immediately relevant organization.

PS: Aside from that, if you're against going back to the moon, why the fuck would you bring up the lost data from the original moon missions? Given the advances in communications and data storage technology since 1969, that is basically equivalent to saying that we have as much to gain from returning to the moon as we did from getting there in the first goddamn place. This point makes all objections to a modern moon landing solid-core garbletrash.

Still, a dwarf planet still hasn't planet in the name. Why include the word if you're going to say "Dwarf planets aren't planets"? I'm not trying to argue that it should be a planet, merely curious as to why the term planet is still in its name if we're going to say that it isn't one. It's kinda confusing.
