Overrated Games

A thread about games that were hyped to ridiculous levels, but didn't live up to the praise.

Bioshock was such a game for me. It's not bad by any means; the production values are great, the story is interesting, and there are some fun special powers. But the core of the game is a first person shooter, and it's just not the best first person shooter. It feels sluggish when you're trying to fight off mooks--the various generic splicers that attack you, and fighting a Big Daddy isn't as risky as it should be because any time you die you're instantly revived at a nearby Vita-Chamber while the Big Daddy retains all the damage you previously did to it. Consequently you never feel far from death, but death hardly matters, so it doesn't have the tension of more standard shooters like Half-Life 2. Overall it's a good game, but the lavish praise it's recieved just seems unwarranted.

Every Metal Gear game since the oringal NES version.

Sorry, but the game play does not make up for the fact there is more cut scene than game play.

It might have helped if the scenes were't made of WTF.

I do enjoy how Kojima trolls his fanbase.

As much as I have a soft spot for a game and still occasionally watch the fandom from a distance: Final Fantasy VII. Yes, it was revolutionary for being the first FF to jump from 2D to 3D, and it was the gateway game for many would-be FF fans, myself included. However, the game hasn't aged very well, and the older I get the more I realize that the story is kind of a clusterfuck.

I mean, I still love the game, warts and all, but it's not God's Gift to Role-Playing Games. It's been overhyped to hell and back, no thanks to the fuckton of gratuitous expansions and the multitudes of soulbonders and basement-dwellers that participate in the fandom. And shut the fuck up about Sephiroth already.

The series it's self is overrated.

What makes DDR more for idiots than Rock Band/Guitar Hero/Guitar Freaks/any other rhythm game?

I couldn't get into Oblivion. The whole open-ended thing would have worked better if the setting and the combat weren't so bland. I'm sure there's something interesting in there somewhere, I just don't want to wade through all the filler to get it.

Oblivion is one of those games that's only any good if you've modded it to the point where it's completely unrecognisable, which is to say it's not good at all because you have to make it an entirely different game than it already was. The only things it improved on from Morrowind were the graphics and combat system. Otherwise, it's not worth even looking at- it's like Bethesda was trying to fuck up their series as badly as possible.

I'm gonna get killed for this, but Legend of Zelda Ocraina of Time, I wouldn't mind so much but every single Zelda game that has come out since has had this title held above it like some unattainable goal.

A Link to the Past had a better plot and all subsequient 3D zeldas have had better gameplay, and of the 3D generation so far only Wind Waker has aged well graphically.

Yes it was good, yes it was a massive jump, but yes I think Majoras mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are better that it.

I've always thought that Majora's Mask was the only half-way interesting Zelda game. There's only so many times you can play the exact same game with the exact same one-dimensional characters doing the exact same thing before you want to put your foot through the console.

I get the feeling you couldn't get past the forsaken fortress could you?

I don't remember, I haven't played it since around the time it actually came out. All I know is that I really didn't enjoy it.

Halo is decent, but doesn't deserve to sell millions of copies.
