Baby dies of whooping cough

The problem is that generally it's not the kids who don't get vaccinated whom die of whooping cough, but babies whom are too young to get the vaccine whom are exposed to un-vaccinated kids. This is the problem I have with the anti-vaccine movement. If people want to put their own kids in danger, that's one thing... but when their decisions put MY family at risk it's an entirely different matter.

I'm not saying that kids should be harmed because their parents are stupid, but the anti-vaccine movement puts *everybody* at risk.

If this is true, He probably doesn't help those who don't help themselves, either. So those who help themselves have an edge over those who don't in any case.

I'm not saying people shouldn't vaccinate their children pretty much whenever possible, I'm saying no one should be telling you what to do with your own offspring over some infinitesimal chance of infecting another kid.

It's only infinitesimal so long as people continue to vaccinate. I think you have no more right to decide not to vaccinate your kids than you do to decide to feed them only on HoHos and Dr. Pepper. This is more of a problem of western society in general than something uniquely American, though "prosperity doctrine" is particularly strong here.

As someone else said earlier, it's only an infinitesimal chance while everyone is vaccinating their kids. When the threshold of immunity is high (~95%), that means only 5% of the population has to decide not to vaccinate before people start getting ill and dying again. Now, admittedly, some other diseases we vaccinate for have a threshold anywhere between 75-85%... but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a social responsibility to get a vaccine to protect those who can't.

Whooping cough in California is up EIGHT TIMES compared to one year ago. Two thousand seven hundred cases. Seven infants have died.

This must be some new meaning for the word "infinitesimal".

Must be, because I don't know that my university here in California would send out a mass email urging everyone to get whooping cough boosters before the semester begins for something truly considered "infinitesimal."

Well, it hasn't happened to Mikey or anybody he knows, therefore the chance is infinitesimal, therefore it doesn't count and other people are stupid to worry about it.
