It does promote the idea that women shouldn't have to be ashamed of talking about a normal, available medical procedure. It does promote the idea that getting an abortion and then wanting to speak out about it shouldn't be something you're shamed for, something you should remain hush-hush about.
Everyone woman's experiences are different, but knowing that many other women have had abortions and aren't afraid to talk about it could help a lot of people. There is a point to prove, and this lady is proving it. I admire her. Okay - where I live having an abortion and talking about it openly is not such a big deal. Unless you give the impression you consider it your preferred alternative to using contraceptives.

Unless you give the impression you consider it your preferred alternative to using contraceptives. You obviously live in a more civilized country than the US. Here it's not uncommon for women who have abortions to get anonymous phone calls, and when they answer hear only a squeeky voice saying "Mommy, Mommy, why did you kill me?" Or to get blood-smeared birthday cards every year on what someone figures would have been their due date.

| Even the UK isn't great about it. One doesn't openly talk about one's abortion because it's not proper... or something like that anyway. It's definitely not talked about. | |

And then when a woman who had an abortion commits suicide, or when a "study" "shows" that women who have abortions suffer from depression or regret it later, everyone goes "SEE ABORTION IS BAD AND IT MAKES YOU WANT TO KILL YOURSELF"

Really? I never got the impression that it was that much of a big deal... quite a few friends and friends of friends have had the morning after pill and pill-induced abortions, and I hear people chatting about things like that (relatively) quite often. It's sort of taboo within my grandparents' sort of generation, but with my parents generation and mine, I never really got the impression that it's that hush-hush. It could be entirely due to the sort of people I know, though.

I wonder this all the fucking time. I've even asked this several times. I've never got an answer. Ok, I'm obviously going to speak for myself here, and obviously a fair number of people will disagree, but here's my reason. I like Mikey. He doesn't get angry, he doesn't flounce, he doesn't take anything to heart, he doesn't make whiny drama threads about not flouncing. If he had it in him to make actual posts with actual content occasionally, and do the whole empathy thing sometimes where you try to put yourself in other people's shoes, I think a lot of internet users could actually learn a thing or two from him. Of course, it's entirely possible that his carefree attitude comes precisely from his complete disregard for empathy, but I think I'll try a couple of times.

I wasn't aware people took me seriously. Also, empathy is for chumps and other people's shoes tend to smell bad.

I know. Births aren't measured by labour pains either. Did you get my point at all? @Eileen and Mr. Doobie: He's young enough to learn. And I'm new - I still have the energy. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
