Wordy McWord. My question is about the power of the lunatic fringe. I mean, Obama got a relatively comfortable victory, and while I'm aware the whackos always tend to be a minority, isn't the Republican Party poisoning the well, so to speak, for a couple of elections by abiding this nonsense?

1.) The word fascism and it's variants are thrown around as freely and as frequently as the word "hello" anymore. Basically, if someone suggests something you disagree with, they're a fascist.

Some people do reject global warming on religious grounds. I've heard it plenty of times before. Seems to be big with Calvinists. People also believe in an eminent end of the world, which is why it's hard to find environmentalist evangelicals.

I have a history professor who blamed this on "South Carolina's racist reputation." I've never seen such an intelligent dumbass. After he said that, he asked the class if we thought a more "British" system would be better, where people can heckle in the middle of the speech a LITTLE bit. We all agreed it was a good idea and that C-SPAN's rating would double overnight.

I vaguely recall PLENTY of black people calling Bush a liar, and I don't at all recall anyone claiming they were motivated by racism. This is just more utter bullshit thrown around by certain people on the left to try to discredit ANYONE who disagrees with Obama. Kind of like they dismissed the City Hall Crashers as partisan nutjobs instead of irritated people with some legitimate concerns.

What makes this particularly asinine, is that they're trying to discredit these people by doing EVERYTHING but actually arguing a relevant issue. They just stand there hollering "RACISM" like a wild pack of broken record players.

Just like any other sick or injured person with no means to pay for treatment--including poor white folks whose ancestors came over on the frigging Mayflower. If people in the health care industry don't like having the healthcare system drained by these people, they'd better get behind public insurance. The unfortunate thing about all this is that the GOP is playing a really dangerous game by openly inviting the lunatic fringe into the fold. And I'm not just talking about the tin-foil hat crowd, I'm talking about the hard-core haters; people like the Aryan Nation, extreme right wing fundies, holocaust deniers, birthers, et al. These people have, for the most part, been margiinalized in the past, because everyone pretty much agreed they were whacko nutjobs. But now we've got Boss Limbaugh and Glen Beck telling them they're America's only hope against the evil of President Obama's Muslim socialist tendencies (or whatever the hell it is they're accusing him of these days).

What we've got here is a mob, and when you get a mob full of disenfranchised people who don't like people or a certain race or religion or gender or sexuality because they're scared by anything they don't understand, you can't control them. That's where the GOP has fucked up big time; they like to believe they've got control of these people, but they don't. NOBODY has control of these people, including the people themselves.

I read the other day that every time President Obama gives a speech outside the White House grounds, the FBI generally receives 40+ threats to assassinate him. From what I understand, this is more than any other president has ever received, including Kennedy. In short, there are large numbers of people out there who actively want him dead. And I would wager that a lot of them want him dead because he's black.

And they don't just live in the south. Iowa's full of racist assholes who believe that anyone whose skin is dark deserves to be shot, or at least 'learn their place.' Hell, the Mormon church believes that black people were originally white, and God turned them black because they disagreed with one of his prophets. The good news is, you can become a Mormon if you're black. The bad news is that you have to wait till you get to heaven to be fully accepted. Because then you'll turn white and be just like everyone else.

Humans, unfortunately, seem hardwired to hate. We HAVE to have someone to blame out stupidity on (because God forbid we accept responsibility for it ourselves).

This is a trend that started decades ago, though. The Republican party pretty much lost all meaningful sense of purpose back when it became the party of the "Religious Right."

I've seen the extremist craziness in people not yet old enough to vote. Since I work at a high school, I see a lot of young people on the verge of being aware of what is going on in the world--and some of them are already way out there (luckily, there are many more who aren't nutjobs).

Late last year, a student was looking at the books on U.S. history, and was angry to see that there were half a dozen books on Obama. He went to me and told me I should remove them, because, and I quote, "He's a Mormon terrorist." Yesterday, a student was telling me about the paper he was writing, which was about his dad, who is a veteran of the Iraq War. He came home a few months ago with a bad case of PTSD. He kept taking it out on his wife and kids, so he decided to leave, and now no one knows where he is. A very pro-military kid was listening and had the nerve to go up to the kid who was talking to me and tell him that his dad was just a wimp, and furthermore, people who were traumatized by their experiences at war weren't real Americans, because real Americans weren't bothered by killing their enemies.
