| Some of the FF series is overrated. VII isn't bad, but people treat it like the second coming of Jesus on payday.
The random battles every two steps killed FFIV for me. FF VI had a fantastic story, but the gameplay was more or less standard RPG fare. FFVIII bored me to tears from the word 'start'. FFX and XII, though, I enjoyed quite a lot. The changes they made to the standard combat system really made all the difference for me.

And now I feel dumb. D: You might be thiking of the full "2 guitars, drums, microphone" setup, in which case, Rock Band was first. In terms of "Instrument-shaped peripheral rythym game," Guitar Hero was first and, as was noted earlier, Guitar Freaks predates them both.

I couldn't get into Oblivion. The whole open-ended thing would have worked better if the setting and the combat weren't so bland. I'm sure there's something interesting in there somewhere, I just don't want to wade through all the filler to get it. 1.) Guitar Hero and such actually have decent music, not faggy disco shit. 2.) Oblivion would have been better if it weren't for ALL of the fucking glitches. Everywhere I turned, something wasn't working right. Some one had fallen off the face of the planet and I couldn't continue the Thief Guild's quest. Some moron is stuck behind something. And on and on. Also, every "moral decision" was a joke. There were no real consequences, and it was ALWAYS some super duper extreme or the other. But every other game with some Moral Compass has the exact same problem. Not to mention, most NPCs were totally irrational. Take five minutes to talk out a solution that doesn't end with me wasting ten minutes slaughtering all of your asses? No, they'd rather be slaughtered and make my job tedious. :redangry: - Penguin wrote:

I was gonna point out that DDR was the only one on the list that you'll actually get LESS fat from playing too much. You've got to play the games the right way. No self respecting guitarist can play One and not headbang all over the place for the last two minutes of the song. Of course, that's how my dumbass friend managed to lose his balance, fall through a glass table, cut up his hand, and miss a week and a half of golf. Don't headbang while drunk. - Kitbug wrote:

going to get me shot but I honestly don't like Wind Waker. You have ten seconds to give a reason other than the graphical style or the sailing before I pull the trigger, go! A combination thereof plus the fact that I just couldn't get into it. And I did try, I played several hours, but it just bored the crap out of me. Not to mention it was RIDICULOUSLY easy. Sailing was a bit tedious, but after you learn that Whirlwing song thing, it wasn't so bad. And it was fun to drift around and do whatever asinine tasks every island had for you to do. But really, you could beat that game in an afternoon. While blindfolded. Normally, I'm not one of the dipshits that thinks everything needs to be harder, like back in the day when video game developers were trying to get you to spend all of your quarters on continues. I'm also not one of those idiots that goes around not getting half of the items, never getting a heart piece, and such just to make it hard. But really, a TEENY challenge would be awesome. Make a game where I don't have to go out of my way to feel challenged.

Try the SMT series, especially the non-Persona games. Half of the bosses in Nocturne could make it on the 'exercises in controller snapping frustration'...and don't get me started on Satan from DD2.

Then why mention them? I think what this thread is skirting dangerously close to is less 'Games that are Overrated' and more 'Games that I personally hate' which knowing this place it not surprising in the slightest. Final Fantasy as a franchise is about right considering how hit and miss it seems to be, games that were at best just above average get far too much hype (Final Fantasy 7). On the other hand games that have held up well on plot and gameplay get nowhere near as much love as we think they should (IMO this means FFTA/2 and FF9) Kingdom Hearts is what I like to think of as a Marmite franchise, you love or hate it. To people who hate any hype is too much. I will admit there only needs to be three games, 1, Chain of Memories then 2. Mass Effect is basically KOTOR without the Jedi, a good game that deserves a sequel. I fail to see how it was or is overhyped. Fable and Fable 2 were over hyped, Given all the bitching I'm guessing Fallout 3 was over hyped, more from fans for the first 2 than anything else if I know the internet as well as I think I do. You want to post the games you personally hate make a thread about it, this is for games that do not live up to the praise almost everybody heaps on it, when FFXII is ending up being mentioned you know something has gone to hell. /Rant. Oh, Halo was overrated, Halo 2 is underrated and Halo 3 can just fuck off and die.

| Well, I did personally think Mass Effect failed to live up to the heaps of praise, so it fits. It was a boring, overly clichéd, poorly plotted and planned mess. | |

| Force Unleashed was full of awesome, and the only thing really over-the-top was redirecting a crashing Star Destroyer. Also it proved a personal theory that Vader was still a pussy long after he got the suit, and that Luke was also a pussy. I have nothing good to say about FFXII, except that Balthier was occasionally amusing, and Ashe wasn't hard on the eyes. Everything else seemed custom-engineered to make me hate the game. | But... Wind Waker wasn't overrated. It was ragged on really hard for its style. And FFXII wasn't really overrated either; it kind of faded into the background pretty quickly. (Spoiler for total irrelevance to the topic) - Spoiler:
I liked both, but the sailing in WW was really, really annoying and kind of hurt the game. I like the world of FFXII and respect the attempt to update the combat system, but I personally like the boring standard-fare RPG turn-based battles, and I like having control of everybody. I made it through WW; I didn't make it through FFXII.
ANYWAY, the only overrated game I can think of off the top of my head is FFVII, simply because there is nothing on this earth deserving of the rabid fangirl/boy-ism of this game's more fervent supporters. And finally, I think preference between FFIV, FFV, and FFVI says a lot about what a person looks for in an RPG.
