| For years, Jeff Wayne has been pimping an animated version of his infamous War of the Worlds disco musical, even putting Paramount thru years of development hell over what became the Tom Cruise version to ensure only he would be able to use the 1898 setting. Well, his bullshit still hasn't come to pass, but Heavy Metal's got their own period piece sequel to the original novel in the pipeline: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it sounds like it could be really bad jingoism if handled poorly. On the other hand, what would a world upgraded with Martian technology be like? The Scarlet Traces comics toyed with the idea, and played it as a disastrous move. If this movie shows both the good and bad of having alien tech used in world wars, maybe it could be something. Thoughts? | |

Usual? For whom? Heavy Metal's regular audience?

| Tits. Whether or not it sucks, we need more R-rated Western animation. Gotta break out of the ghetto somehow. | |

Well, there was Tales of the Black Freighter earlier this year, but as it's being recut into the Watchmen movie proper, mayhaps it doesn't count. That said, R-rated DVD cartoons are a ghetto in and of themselves. An R-rated theatrical cartoon would be a way better approach to breaking down the "cartoons are for kids" image.

I guess we'll just have to settle for Teddy Roosevelt in his stead. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
