Funny, I don't remember Wonka being an obnoxious, questionably homicidal manchild in the book. Or the unwieldy dentist backstory. Or Grandpa Joe having no personality and a handful of lines. Or the syrupy ending. Or the shitty CGI that suggested someone went, "Hey, the first blueberry scene was Fetish Fuel to enough people, let's play very deliberately on that to the point of making seasoned GAFFers uncomfortable!" Or...look, it hurt me inside, okay? Frankly, I think Burton has been basking in his own image for too long, and his work has suffered for it. I miss the Beetlejuice days.
I agree. I watched this movie and just tried to wipe it from my mind. Ugh. I liked Coraline, though, so at least that shows that Tim Burton is still capable of making a good flick.
Also, I'm shocked to find that Where the Wild Things Are actually looks kind of good. I instantly assumed that any adaptation of it would be complete crap, but it looks more like they abandoned the original storyline (which, admittedly, would certainly not have stretched out to fill a movie) and went their own way. It could be awesome or it could be terrible.
I'm kind of looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes movie. Sure, it appears to have abandoned every single description of Holmes and his personality in canon and, sure, it looks like a bad crack fic or something, but God damn it the movie looks like fun. I mean, it certainly won't be anything like the Grenada series (or anywhere near as good), but it looks like a good time... though the poster makes Holmes look disturbingly vampiric. I forget who called it "Bram Stoker's Sherlock Holmes", but they were right.
Spoiler:
Also I kind of think those tiny black glasses are hot. WTF.

Okay, admittedly this looks like a blend of Aliens, The Descent, Event Horizon, and 28 Weeks Later, but it has Ben Foster, Andre Hennicke, and is directed by Christian Alvart, so I'm gonna give it a shot.

I'm going to the movies just for that one with my whole family.
I'm not so optimistic about this one, as it's from the same people who brought us The Day After Tomorrow.

Is that John Cusack?
I love him! I love everything he's ever been in (with the possible exception of 1408, but that wasn't his fault). I'm definitely going to see this, and I hate disaster movies.

If you ask me it looks fucking terrible. That director knows how to film a disaster but not a disaster movie.

Ok, if you ask me, movies based on the world ending on Dec. 21st, 2012 are just... well, rather like zombie movies, in the bad way. No matter what you do, you're fucked just because you're alive when the world's going to end. It's like the ultimate exercise in frustration and pointlessness--no matter what you do, the world is ending. At least with zombie movies you can FEEL like they have a fighting chance... and there are generally exploding zombies.

Oh Delcat, why would people go for accurate when they can scream "CONSPIRACY" and "ANCIENT MAGIC KNOWLEDGE FROM THOSE OLD DEAD PAGANS"?
Personally, I'm hoping for some ritual suicides from the crazies on the date. Its very convienent for me when inferior genetics cull themselves from the population without me having to lift a finger.

Yeah, up until you're trying to get to work and they have a police blockade up while they shovel crazy-bits off the pavement. How convenient is that, huh?

Don't they normally do that kind of thing with overdoses? I've never heard of a group that comitted ritual suicide by jumping off of a building. It's not very romantic. They seem like the kind of people who believe in "going to sleep".

What was it I watched that went through all the trailers those guys put out and just how big a disappointment each movie turned out to be? I forget, but the point was that their marketing team is a bunch of geniuses - their trailers make their movies look like the BEST GOD DAMN THING EVER JESUS but the movies always end up severely lacking.

Was it the Nostalgia Critic's review of Godzilla 2000?
Man I'm posting a lot here, sorry.
Never mention that movie again.
I want to see Carriers [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] but it's not getting a wide release which sucks. I'll just have to wait til it comes out on dvd I guess. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I also cannot wait until 28 Months Later comes out.

Well yes, this is the same person who has no clue how rapid temperature changes work or what they do, but can throw together some montages of things freezing and burning and turn them into a commercial.

Oh cool. I liked both movies, so that sounds possibly awesome.
I am seriously, seriously looking forward to fiiiiii-nully seeing The Road, since I've been waiting for it since before the end of last year (no joke). The trailer looks awesome, and I know I'll probably be shedding buckets of tears by the film's end.

I facepalmed less than 20 seconds into that one because it labelled the Mayans as 'mankind's earliest civilization'. According to Wikipedia, Mayan civilization only dates back to circa 2000BC, whereas Sumer started pre-4000BC. I wonder what Emmerich will try to do to top this one? He blew up lots of cities in Independence Day, he froze the northern hemisphere in The Day After Tomorrow, now he's seemingly trashed the entire world's land surface - I'm thinking a supernova or something that destroys the entire planet while an all-American nuclear family and a bunch of ethnic stereotypes escape in a spaceship. Ugh, I just had the horrible thought that he might try to do an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's Songs of Distant Earth. Or a live-action remake of Titan A.E.
On the subject of trailers, what about trailers that make good movies look bad? I went to the cinema the other day and saw several trailers for films which might be quite good (they at least seemed to have people in them/making them who are known to have produced good work), but which either made the films look bad or were just plain annoying. In particular, why do so many movie trailers have to have either a gravelly-voiced man or a bunch of title cards proclaiming massively cliched and overdramatic things like "A MAN. A WOMAN. FATE DROVE THEM APART. LOVE WOULD DRAW THEM TOGETHER." (I just made that up, it wasn't from an actual trailer, though I'm sure it could be)? It just doesn't work for some movies.

The Nightmare On Elm Street remake. I adored the original films, despite their flaws, years ago. With Jackie Earle Haley playing Freddy, I have faith that this movie will be good, despite Michael Bay's name appearing in the trailer.
Love the opening, love all the visual throwbacks to the first NOES film (Freddy's hand coming up from the bathwater between Nancy's legs, for one), and... Jackie Earle Haley! Right now, this man can do no wrong in my eyes, so he'll have to be surrounded and engulfed by massive sucktasticness for his portrayal of Freddy to not live up to my hopes.

^ I like the original Freddy. Not the movies after the first but the guy that played Freddy. This makes me sad because he's not in it.
