I was just saying to my husband a couple weeks ago that I couldn't believe he was still alive.

Not so much a "celebrity" as a "noteworthy newsmaker" - Cronkite was the face of news during the 1960's and 1970's. He covered the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, the moon landing...and in an era when news was actually news instead of laced with opinion and spin. Cronkite admitting on the air that he was opposed to the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive was shocking, and reportedly led President Lyndon Johnson to remark "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America." He was referred to as "The Most Trusted Name In News", a motto that was adopted by the CBS Evening News that he anchored.

| I grew up watching him. Which likely explains why I have trouble with the current crop of 'news anchors.' | |

| Anyone remember the HBO miniseries 'From the Earth to the Moon'? He was featured prominently there, as the series covered how the hype of the moon landing started then how it died down. Since he was in the thick of it, there were several eps dedicated to his media coverage. When the hype over the moon died down, he was also on the way out.
The Apollo 13 movie also had some scenes about him, IIRC.

| Yeah, right. Like anybody will notice. I'm still seeing this "The day the music died" crap on Michael Jackson on the TV. It could go on for years. | |

| He got his start here in Kansas City, so I've learned quite a bit about him over the years.
I care. He was iconic man. Who can forget the announcement of JFK's death?

| I have to admit, I was surprised that he was even still alive. Still, it's an unpleasant surprise, him being gone so suddenly, especially with as long as he lived. | |

| He did a cameo in an episode of Futurama. It was one of the Christmas episodes. Bender even made a comment about how he didn't trust him because he was too trustworthy or something like that. | |

Someone born after 1980, for one. Really, that's like me asking y'all how you could forget Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak, or The Breat Bambino calling his shot. Still, he was better than Jackson. :lolinsane:

Oh he does, but only if it's sports-related See? Spotty is smart enough to know when Joe DiMaggio played ball. Also, the first three Metallica albums came out before I was born, so nyah. :tongue2:

It's not our fault we're not dinosaurs. Nice egocentrism right back atcha. Not knowing who Walter Cronkite was or not getting why he was such a big deal is one thing. Acting proud of said ignorance is another thing altogether.

| I know who he was. I just couldn't recall off the top of my head which network he anchored for and couldn't be bothered to look it up. Granted, I deliberately worded it in the way I thought would be most irritating. Also, didn't I mention him crying over the Kennedy assassination? *Reads up* Gee, I guess I didn't. I must have figured joking about him crying like a chump would've been over the line. And I actually got quamp's Sign Off joke. Which is about the third time he's done something funny. | |
