I think it's congenital. There are Baptist Churches in the south that still refuse to marry mixed-race couples, despite the fact that the Civil Rights Act was supposed to do away with that crap. The majority of Baptists I've met (and I've met a fair number) are racist and homophobic to the extreme. But they have no trouble at all with marrying a woman whose had five kids by four different men (only one of whom she was married to) to the man whose marriage she broke up by starting an affair.
