Yup. Everybody else falls to the mercy of their employers (for as long as they still have one) and the insurance companies. Well, there's Medicare, but they of their spouses have to have paid the Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. So you can't really call that free.

I hope Vermont's single payer experiment works out well.

Speaking as someone on Medicaid, health coverage doesn't equal healthcare. There are only so many places that are willing to work with Medicaid patients because it doesn't pay very much and to compensate, they often take in way too many patients. That and it doesn't always cover much of anything. I have to fight to get a lot of prescriptions, including basic stuff like anti-inflammatories (over the counter stuff doesn't cut it) and allergy prescriptions that aren't on their "preferred drug list."

If anything, Medicaid in my state is all about providing as little actual health care as possible, and a lot of it's run by private companies because they're soooooooooo much better than the government, you know.

Bullshit, and not only because of Canada. Most first-world countries do, but there it's not a reason for the poor to get themselves incarcerated because SURPRISE! Their poor tend to have health insurance, and generally better coverage than that crap that is Medicaid (if you're even eligible for it - I know I'm not, even though I'm allowed to pay for it).

As someone who's currently uninsured, and has been for years once again (because hubby's work only offers medical coverage for him, and even that plan is too expensive considering what he makes), I can see where that man is coming from if he has conditions that aren't treatable by cheap generics or require frequent doctor visits ($90 a pop if he needs to see a general practitioner without health insurance, $200 a pop if we're talking a specialist, $500 and up if we're talking hospital visits and/or MRIs or other shit-ass expensive tests), and it's a fucking crying shame for one of the richest fucking countries on earth. Call me a filthy socialist, but that's just wrong, sorry.

*will finally get health insured by her graduate school come fall, but she'd still pay more taxes if it meant this kind of shit wouldn't happen again*

I thank Jeebus I left the US to work in a country with civilized medical care. I didn't realize it at the time, but seeing the nagging constant fear so many of my family still back home has to live with has made me count that blessing at least once a week.
