What A Shock, Mississippi is the place.
- Quote :
- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) announced late Wednesday that he will grant an early release from prison to two sisters serving unusually long sentences for armed robbery.
They were sentenced to two consecutive life terms for an armed robbery where they acted as lures. The guys who actually committed the robbery got eight years, and served three.
I agree that they have been victims of injustice, and deserve to be paroled given the history this case has. But the conditions upon which the sentence will be suspended is galling:
- Quote :
- Barbour said he decided to suspend the sentences in light of the poor health of 38-year-old Jamie Scott, who requires regular dialysis. The governor asserted that 36-year-old Gladys Scott's release is contingent on her giving a kidney to her inmate sibling.
How magnanimous of you, Governor Barbour. Especially after your
faux pas last week about the Citizens Councils in the segregation era being "not so bad". Have to do something to keep those Presidential aspirations on track, am I right?
However you do realize you just broke federal law. It's against the law to offer any "valuable consideration" in exchange for a person donating an organ to another. Offering a person their freedom, even when the person has indicated they would willingly donate the organ anyway, is valuable consideration.
