| "Catholics aren't real Christians" is such a common theme among fundies. Even my ex-girlfriend (the best example of a neighbor-loving Christian I've met to this day) said that to me once. | |

True story: sitting in bf's dorm, get a knock at the door, and it's some guy coming to talk to us about God's love, etc. Bf handles it, guy asks: "What are your religious beliefs?"
Bf says, "I'm Catholic."
Guy: "So what does that mean, really?"

I've just had the misfortune of listening to 'Prophet Andre's' podcast... It's a half-hour incoherrant, brainless, warbling rant. Occasionally he'll read from the Bible, but none of his quotes have any relevence to what he is talking about, nor do they do anything to add weight to his arguement.
The arguement in question, BTW, is that TEH DEVIL has distorted Jesus' message causing people to only 'think' that they are doing God's will, but are actually doing Satan's... But at no point does he articulate exactly what it is that Christians are doing wrong... Unless you count this:
- Quote :
- Tellin' all kind of lies... Saying that Jesus is the son of God, and is only... a way... that they're talking about. To serve Jesus is to beleive that he is the son of God... But Jesus is God. When it talks about the son of God it's only talking about his body. His word. But Jesus is spirit. And he was in the word. And he was in that body. But they don't know this...
I think what he is saying is that the idea of the Holy Trinity is wrong. Jesus wasn't the three-in-one, because he actually was one person who was God in a human body...
... Yeah...
Also this gem:
- Quote :
- And you set up these days. These false days. Christmas and Easter and Thanksgiving [...] Jesus never told anybody to celebrate a day called Easter, or a day called Christmas... Flyin' raindeers and Santy Claws and Easter Bunnies. Jesus never told anybody to do that BUT THE DEVIL DOES IT!
I'd like to know how he is so sure that he is right and that everyone else is wrong...
He does mention your walk...
- Quote :
- They're involved in this marathon. Showin' how great they are and how smart they are and how they can run 26 miles. Spending all this time, wasting, runnin' down the steeet, instead of taking the time to serve God and to seek what God wants...
- Quote :
- We passed out flyers to them, tellin' them that they god bad spirits in them and they took them and tear them up. Threw 'em away, threw 'em at us. They are some naughty people!
I swear, it is because of people like this, and the gibberish they spout that I am sometimes embarrassed to tell people that I'm Christian and I beleive. It's fucking shameful. So many heresies, so little time...Technically speaking, Prophet Andre's insistence of Jesus being God's avatar, means that he's a heretic, for the above statement, potentally forms the basis of at least 3 Christian heresies, condemned by the early Christian church in various Councils from Nicea onwards... For example, you could argue that his core statement is a reworded version of Audanism (God Has Human Form), Docetism (Jesus's "Humanity" was a illusion), Monothelitism (Jesus had only 1 nature, which was divine) depending on how you state/phrase it... (It's marvellous what you can find out by a quick use of Internet search engines, to find about the subject...).

He basically just told him that to get him to leave, but he stayed for another fifteen minutes or so talking about sharing the love of God with your friends, and how good friendship can only come from God, etc. I'm all fine and dandy with people speaking to me about religion and having a conversation, but it wasn't so much a conversation as BE A CHRISTIAN BE A CHRISTIAN BE A CHRISTIAN. Also, "So what does that mean, really?" made me snort from my hiding place at the computer.

Indeed, I'm surprised the haughtiness didn't hit you like something physical. And of course, if you get annoyed, it's the legion of demons you're hosting having an anaphilactic reaction to the Gospel of the Lord. It's never, God forbid, that you may have averse reactions to douchety.

| This afternoon, a group of fundies came parading down my street with a bullhorn, yelling about Jesus's love. My 1-year-old niece had just fallen asleep, and of course she woke up and started crying. I was gratified when the cops showed up and disbanded the group because they didn't have a parade permit. | |

| Yunno, stuff like this is part of what makes me leery of seeking my PhD in the states. (Of course, a lot of the best universities are in the states, so...)
In my current class there is, I think, exactly one (1) overtly Christian person. I found that out last term in Intro to Law when the teacher asked who was against abortion. Fun times.

You will not be regularly accosted on the street by religious fanatics in the US I live in Indiana, so lots of people around me are devout, including some of my closest friends, but they don't feel the need to bring it up constantly, either. Plus, lots of the "best" universities are in the big coastal cities, which tend to lean so far left they're in danger of falling over.

Indeed. "Left-leaning" in America is often a thing of merriment to Western Europe. (And I still can't read anything that accuses Obama of being socialist without chuckling.)

is this better or worse according to murrika i'm not sure Let's just say your average American wouldn't recognize a socialist if they came up and bit them on the ass. I told a friend of mine that Britain's government was essentially socialist, and she gasped, looked horrified and said "I didn't know they were communists!" For the vast majority of Americans, socialism=communism. Which naturally leads to atheism. Because any form of Government besides American Democracy leads to atheism.

Because any form of Government besides American Democracy leads to atheism. And that's, somehow, a bad thing.

| I had a group of Jehova's Witnesses come to my door a few weeks ago. I saw them going door to door as I drove home so I was prepared when they got to my door.
I put on my biggest pentacle, put on a Marylin Manson shirt, emo make up and waited at the door for them to knock.
When I opened the door, they got one look at me and tried their damned best to convert me. The thought they were getting somewhere and then I brought up Edward Irving, Henry Drummond and John Nelson Darby and their wonderful invention; Modern Fundamentalism and The Rapture.
I could hear them go *BeepBoop Error In Processing Data Beep* and they could not get out of my door way fast enough.
It twas awesome to behold. I should have video taped it.

| A couple of years ago, some religious people tried to come up to the house. At the time, we had a large poodle-chow mix with a very deep, scary sounding bark. They got almost to the door, praising God (loudly) the whole way, when the dog started barking. They turned and ran so fast they tripped over each other, one of them wailing the whole time about the devil being in the house. | |

By American standards. Fair enough, though I meant it affectionately, as I lean pretty far left myself.

| Hell, even the south is tolerable, as Bible Belty as it is. Most people won't talk down to you and make you feel uncomfortable about religion unless they're assholes. And it's not like YOU think they're an asshole, and only you think think that - it's like everyone knows they're assholes. | |

| Necroposting to say that they were back this year, so late in the Walk that I thought they had given up.
The hate mail was about Easter being evil or some such nonsense. I don't know if you people got the memo, but Easter was last week. Why hand these out now?
At least they didn't attack the Walk directly, like they did last time.
