| This is where the party ends I can't stand here listening to you And your racist friend I know politics bore you But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you And your racist friend
It was the loveliest party that I've ever attended If anything was broken I'm sure it could be mended My head can't tolerate this bobbing and pretending Listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he's saying
This is where the party ends I'll just sit here wondering how you Can stand by your racist friend I know politics bore you But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you You and your racist friend
This is where the party ends I can't stand here listening to you And your racist friend I know politics bore you But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you And your racist friend
Out from the kitchen to the bedroom to the hallway Your friend apologizes, he could see it my way He let the contents of the bottle do the thinking Can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding
This is where the party ends I can't stand here listening to you And your racist friend I know politics bore you But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you And your racist friend

Hey! What'd I do? Cheer for the Capitols, dye your hair pink, cheer against God's Chosen Squad, actually obey the speed limit, be a whiner, actually obey the speed limit (I can't emphasize that enough, for shame [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ), and probably other stuff.

- As for the Puerto Rican thing, you tend to fall into two distinct types: the ones who bitch about American expansionism because they are butthurt about being only a territory (while having representation and having been offered statehood multiple times), and the ones who realize that the aid that the US pumps into the area, due to being a territory, is a very good thing.
The HELL? Yes, so far, I've been mostly offended by the treatment of the RM news, that was my whole point. But I might as well school your ignorant ass on US territorial relationships. Back 1898, when the US won Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American war jackpot, Puerto Ricans did indeed greeted democracy with hugs and lollipops. Why did they get involved the Spanish-American war in the first place? In the words of the immortal GlaDDOS, "we do what we must, because we can". The US needed new markets to sell stuff to, PR and Cuba happened to be there, oppressed by evil Spain. (Read: delusions of grandeur and a chance to make a quick buck.) Except the US didn't quite know what to do with it, nor did it have an exit strategy (sound familiar?) so instead of marrying us or dumping us, it set up Puerto Rico as a mistress with house and car, which seems like a pretty nice deal, except its legal rights are worth shit. In other words, COLONIALISM. Currently, some people favor the colony, some favor statehood, others favors independence. The latter two think the mistress arrangement is utterly humiliating; all 3 sides have been bitching about it since the 1950s. The biggest problem is the economy: the economy of a republic looks vastly different from an economy of a state in a federation. And the economy for a colony? Is doomed to failure, forever. Only congress has the power to approve a referendum. The colony option won out in the 1950s; history has now proven that it was the wrong choice as the colony is bankrupt, ethically and monetarily. But Congress has also sat on its ass for 60 years, so that's where we are now. We can make local referendums, but they are worthless if Congress won't respect the results (there have been at least 5 worthless ones through the decades). In fact, Congress has to write the damn thing to begin with. (And why oh why has it sat on its ass for 60 years? Because Republicans think that any potential congressional district would be Democrat. And considering how Republicans behave against minorities, they'd be right.) We are second-class citizens. And just so you understand how dire it is, if any of you living Stateside ever moved to PR, you would automatically lose your right to vote for president, you would lose all congressional and senate representation, your Medicare would be slashed by half, you would be frozen out of Obama's healthcare reform and your Social Security money would be laughable, among other billions little slights. The business is so very fucking serious, there's talk of taking it all the way to the US Supreme Court as a civil rights issue, since we're basically second-class citizens, not that different from African Americans in the 60s or the gays right now. Oh, and our so-called "representative" in the federal government? A dude who can't vote, so he gets to twiddle his fingers all the time, or beg for favors to NY senators or other places with enough Puerto Ricans with political clout, in a vain attempt to get shit done. Didn't work - Obamacare doesn't apply to us. And the pathetic Federal aid throw at us to sooth your guilty conscience? Loose change compared to what we're missing. In the end, you're still a superpower that pretends to encourage democracy everywhere in the Middle East except the world's oldest colony sitting in your backyard. (And lest we forget: shits on gays, screwed over African Americans and created Sarah Palin.) Note, however, that I favor statehood myself. And since I'm an American, I'm well within my right to call on the bullshit on my American government.

The US needed new markets to sell stuff to, PR and Cuba happened to be there, oppressed by evil Spain. Actually, we just went to war over Cuba. It was only after decisive victory over Spain that we realized we could take them to the cleaners for Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, Wake Island, the Crab Nebula, etc. Also, the strongest push for the war came from William Randolph Hearst and his (in)famous "yellow journalism-" wars sold newspapers, so he used his newspapers to help manufacture a war to sell more newspapers. - Ceres wrote:

Considering that the Spanish-American War marked the end of the Spanish empire and the emergence of the United States as a world power, "delusions" is a bit of a disservice. - Ceres wrote:

Because when you're ceded permanent control of a territory with a local population that isn't making problems for you, the first thing you do is formulate an exit strategy. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] - Ceres wrote:

COLONIALISM? From the late-nineteenth-century United States? BALDERDASH, ma'am. Ultimately, story of the ownership of Puerto Rico is pretty much the story of most of the land the United States controls- "it's ours, we stole it fair and square."

Not to say they don't occasionally get lucky with Black Sabbath or Motorhead or Rammstein or AC/DC. Just that if you give a blind baseball player five decades, he's going to reach base once or twice by accident. Thanks for this gem, Mikey.
