I didn't actually find a topic for all fanfiction, regardless of fandom, so here we are.

My initial offering is most of the body of work from Sleeps with Coyotes. She's primarily a slash writer with a massive helping of xenokink, but she admits to having problems with porn and consequently writes very little of it, and rarely in graphic detail. Admittedly, some of her weirder stuff evokes a massive WTF, but for the most part she excels at character development and, oddly, AU.

Two of her massive series that I would highly recommend are Mascotverse and Mirrorverse (scroll down the pages to get to them) for Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts, respectively.

The former is a sprawling series beginning approximately fifteen years pre-game that branched into three alternate endings, is currently about 240,000 words and is still in progress to fill out the details. Using the original game canon (started long before Crisis Core and the like), it maps a young Sephiroth's development, introduces him to an exuberant Zack, later brings in a shy, determined Cloud, and weaves Aeris' influence in for all of them. There are interesting, not at all overbearing original characters that add depth to the world (which presumes a Norse pantheon), and slowly developed relationships between all the characters concerned. The romantic entanglements are just that, with a realistically proposed Zack/Aeris, Zack/Cloud, Zack/Cloud/Aeris and, depending on which of the three ending timelines you follow, Sephiroth/Zack/Cloud or Sephiroth/Zack/Cloud/Aeris. I know, I know, I was skeptical too, but these are the stories that actually won me over to idea of Sephiroth paired with anybody. After reading this series, it's much easier to read others of hers which presume a lot of the homework shown in these, and she was very prolific while she was part of the fandom.

The latter is a Kingdom Hearts series following Riku through the games and (when it's finished) after the end of the KH2. It's also Sephiroth/Riku. KH Sephiroth presupposes a similar history to that worked out in her Mascotverse, but deals more with a Sephiroth gone feral and so utterly insane he's approaching sanity from the opposite direction. It's an excellent character study for both of them.

I've been trying to find these four stories posted somewhere other than in .pdf form but I can't. Believe me when I say that these Harry Potter parodies are well worth it, though. Check out this site right here (under the Fanfiction link, of course).

For Kingdom Hearts, I've got two: Depths of Memory and Boys. They're both AUs, but in a good way. The former was one of the first fics I read (that wasn't a one-shot, that is), so the nostalgia filter might be on; just remember English is her second or third language. And the latter is just pure awesome.

That's Ain't Afraid to Die, an amazing, epic, canon-friendly and incredibly engaging Cowboy Bebop fan fiction by Cassandra (no, not that one). Enjoy!

Yeah, I've found a couple of good fics on the Fanfic Recs page (like this Silmarillion one called Down Like Rain, featuring Morgoth and Tinuviel), but a lot of mediocrity manages to worm its way on.

I have two—no, three—particular fanfic recommendations recommendations at the moment.

The first is Heart Funnel, a Final Fantasy VI fic. I think I've recommended it to other people elsewhere, but when I first read it I was struck by how beautifully it was written. The dialogue, and the interactions between characters, are exquisite.

The second is a Harry Potter fic called Eden. (A LuciusxHermione fic, so if that's not your cup of tea best skip the next few paragraphs.) God, how do I even begin to describe it. This is the only fic that, now that I have finished it, I can never go back and reread. It is pure, distilled emotion in verbal format. This fic is incredible, indescribable. It is one of the few fanfics that have ever made me cry. (And not just a single, perfect tear, either. I mean sobbing.)

A word to the wise: this fic is dark, very much so. Not the darkest I've ever read, but close. There's a lot of suffering and hate and, ironically, love too. It's darkfic done incredibly well. It is horrifying, brilliant, and beautiful by turns; the characterization is damn near perfect (especially for Lucius, whom I've seen to light and too dark). Voldemort and Bellatrix are also scarily well-done. They almost leap off the page, truly. In any event, I cannot rec this fic enough.

And on a lighter note, my third rec is a Transformers fic called A Transformation in Five Acts. (Lo, Adagio's barely-hidden inner Transformers fan comes out to play.) In all seriousness, this fic is amazing like woah, and it deserves approximately eighty bajillion reviews. The premise is fairly simple—Optimus and Megatron arriving at a truce, and the ensuing attempt to make peace between the two factions—but it's what the author does with it that's so astounding.

For starters, there's the characterization. The interaction between Optimus and Megs, the dialog, the way Megatron in particular struggles to face his past self and actions from the perspective of the cold light of sanity (it makes sense in context)… it's all effing awesome. And the intricacy with which the author puts it all together is a treat. (Actually, this fic is one of maybe five or six, in all my experience, that has made me really connect with the characters. It's like the flip-flopping sensation you get on a rollercoaster.)

There's also the style of writing itself, which is hoogely entertaining. And the author somehow manages to keep track of all the different terminology, from Cybertronian swears to anatomy—which gives the fic an incredible authenticity. It's like it's being told by a Transformer narrator, rather than a human one. They poured their heart and soul into writing that story, and it shows. Fanfics like these are the ones that make me squee with happiness.

Aaaand... that's it for now. Surely I'll remember something I left out and there'll be copious facepalming, but those three are the first that leap to mind.

If you like Kingdom Hearts and hate the awful fanfiction fandom, you're going to love this fic! It's called Those Lacking Spines, and it's pretty much a huge satire about how Xaldin, Lexaeus, and Vexen go off on a quest to 'Fandom Hearts' to save their fellow organization members from stupid fanfiction. One of my favorite stories in the pit.

And Justice for Q - Q is captured by the Enterprise crew and is put on trial for crimes against humanity. The Continuum finds the idea funny enough that they not only condone it, they agree to uphold whatever decision the court makes. The only stipulations are that Q can choose any lawyer or witness he wishes. Who does he choose as his defense? Captain Kirk.

Now the prose is a bit clunky and the pacing can be rushed, especially towards the beginning, but the dialogue is excellent and once the story gets going, you get completely sucked into it. It's clever and witty and the build-up in the courtroom scene is perfect. It takes a spin on Q that I haven't seen before - it doesn't condone his actions but at the same time it doesn't vilify him. They also take the Borg in an interesting direction. The ideas in it are actually good for once. The characterizations are more dead on than I've seen in a long time. Kirk is fantastic, especially his climactic closing. Seriously, read it.

He has some other stuff hosted on the same site too, including a Trek novel, but I haven't read any of it yet.

A Midwinter's Thaw - a Dragon Age fanfic that explores what happened to Alistair and fem!Cousland after she chose to spare Loghain and crown Anora at the Landsmeet.

I do recommend this fic for Dragon Age fans as it takes a great premise and writes it very, very well and believably, but it does have its flaws.

- Firstly, it's currently at chapter 40 with no end in sight so I suggest not reading it unless you're in for the long haul.
- Secondly, it does have a tendency to wander off from the original premise here and there after chapter 15 or so.
- The authors are favoring their original characters more than the canon characters in later chapters. If you like these characters this won't be a problem but for people who want to read about Alistair and fem!Cousland, it may get a bit frustrating to have to deal with the constant deviations.

On the plus side, it has drawn the attention of some rather artistically talented fans and it even has fanart to go along with the fic itself. So that's always a plus.

I have an insane love for crack pairings. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Dark Knight:
"What Doesn't Kill You" by laquila
"Truth", also by laquila
These pair the Joker with Rachel Dawes, but it's actually done really well. The author manages to keep as the Joker. There's no sudden changing him into a good guy with THE POWER OF TRU LUV. Both are rated M for p0rnz and violence. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Harry Potter:
"A Different Kind of Gravity" by Kako
This one is....Voldemort/Hermione. WAT. Often manages to be funny and dark at the same time and is mostly in character.

There were a couple good genfics I liked, but I seem to have misplaced them. Fuck.

It's an Odd Coincidence by Telcontar Rulz

Quote :
AU. Logan 'Wolverine' Howlett finds himself in a very strange place. He tries to figure everything out, but he seems cause more problems than solve them. Will he be able to deal with it, and will he ever get home? A crossover between X-Men and LotR.

It's a crossover between book-verse Lord of the Rings and movie-verse X-Men. Wolverine gets transported into Middle Earth and joins the Fellowship.

It follows all three of the books, but it's not just a rehash of the books with Wolverine adding a couple lines of dialogue. He does things that actively change the quest and the Fellowship themselves. It's long and detailed, and it isn't always told from Logan's POV.

A sequel is in the works, too.

I don't usually go out of my way to read slash (or fanfiction in general, these days, ahh... well aside from the bad stuff), but the Sherlock Holmes fanfiction of Katie Forsythe is actually incredibly well done. Romance between Holmes and Watson is the main aspect of the stories, and the stories have emotional depth without diving into melodrama or being plotless. Yes, they do have proper plots, unlike most slash fanfiction. The writing itself is a near perfect pastiche of the way Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, the emotions are well handled and communicated, and her interpretations of Holmes and Watson ring true and elaborate on what is present in the canon. The dialogue is also extremely well written. Her fanfictions are often cleverly tied in with canon stories in ways that don't mean you're just reading a rehashing of something you've already read.

However, if you don't like romance (as that is always the main focus of her stories), I would steer clear of these ones.

What with the topic on bad crossover devices, I thought I'd rec some good crossovers, to provide balance to the...Force, or something.

Crumpets Aren't My Style by Marz1
SG-1/Harry Potter
While this story does suffer from the occasionally hilarious typo, it is otherwise wonderful. The characters are all bang on target and the two universes have been very well meshed. This one uses the "device of no device" or the these-two-verses-are-actually-the-same-verse technique.

Bridges by Tassos
SG-1/Buffy
It has been a long time, but if I remember rightly, this fic was originally written for a challenge on Twisting the Hellmouth for people to use the two-characters-are-unexpectedly-related crossover device in a believable and appropriate fashion. Which this story does. It also features my second-favorite Buffy threat to anyone.

Stupid Portal by elementalv
Buffy/Star Trek
This one has a number of great interactions, including a fight between Worf and Spike and Giles and Picard bonding over tea. It also features my first-favorite Buffy threat to anyone. This cross starts, essentially, with a bamf, but is justified later on.

ROG on Vacation and It's Not Exactly Stealing by dhrachth
Highlander/LotR and Highlander/LotR/Buffy
"ROG on Vacation" has Methos accidentally using a magic McGuffin to get to Middle-Earth, where he, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas (all of whom are in-character, and only one of whom is moony-eyed over Arwen...and it's the appropriate one, no less Smile ) solving a murder mystery and preventing assassination attempts. Methos also makes beer. The sequel brings Legolas into the modern era using the same McGuffin in reverse and features the Highlander crew (plus one elf) assisting the Buffy crew in stopping the end of the world. While they aren't fixing Duncan's roof, of course. Also includes some "surprisingly good takeout from Mario Wang's Chinese & Pizza."

Bumping this up to recommend Two Step by Disrupted Original in the Left 4 Dead section of the Pit. It's essentially a continuation of L4D2 centered on Nick trying to find the other three after they're separated.

I know this is Mass Effect and it is also fluff, but it is fluff well done with great consideration taken to the physical differences between the two involved. Especially the fact that oral contact with bodily fluids from each other would cause anything from mild swelling to anaphylactic shock and death.

Timeless to Me by LunaMax1214 I adore this because the author remembers that Garrus is a different species entirely and not just an armored human. And because sex never goes like it does in the movies and this fic shows some of the things that can go hilariously wrong that make the experience that much more endearing and fulfilling.

PostSubject: Re: Antidote fanfiction   Antidote fanfiction EmptySun Sep 11, 2011 9:35 am

I've been reading pretty intensively in the Hetalia fandom as of late, so I decided to share a few stories that I really liked. It's such a huge fandom with tons of potential for fail, so I'm always really happy to find gems.

Buttsex: The Musical - a parody about the cliché ways in which some of the popular pairings are handled in the fandom.

Literary License - France meets Marquis de Sade.

October Twenty Fourth - a human!AU in which Prussia is in the hospital with a terminal illness and Germany visits him every day. This is angsty as hell and left me feeling down for a whole day. This has some incest.

Out of the Fire, into the Frying Pan - a human!AU in which Prussia is kidnapped and abused by Russia for eight years before he finally escapes and tries to rebuild his life. I'm not usually a fan of stories like this because abuse is so often handled terribly in fics and I like Russia, but this story is amazing. The way trauma and the struggle to heal and live a normal life are portrayed is fantastic. My jaw hit the floor when I found out the author is only 15. This will eventually become a polyamorous relationship between Prussia, Austria and Hungary. The story deals heavily with mental, physical and sexual abuse, so it's not very light reading. WIP

The Road Not Taken - a human!AU in which America is a fighter pilot in WWII and crashes in Germany, after which he's taken in and looked after by Germany, an SS officer. I avoided this story for a long time because WWII stories are a recipe for disaster in this fandom, so I was very pleasently surprised when I finally gave it a chance. The characters are very real and human, and I love the relationship that America and Germany eventually develop. WIP

Till Death Do Us Apart - a human!AU in which France and England are in a relationship, but France dies in a car accident. The powers that be can't decide if he should go to heaven or hell, so they give him the chance to earn his afterlife. He has to return to Earth and prove that his and England's love was real by winning him over again - in the body of America, England's ex. This is a very touching and funny story, and one of my favourite human!AUs in the fandom. WIP

Wheel of Fortune - a human!AU taking place in 18th century Italy and revolving around Romano's struggles to improve his life and come to terms with himself. This is written by my friend, so I'm a little biased, but I honestly think this is a wonderful story. I especially like the way the different characters have been integrated into the setting without feeling out of place. WIP

Maybe You're a Sinner - various characters are trying to ignore the atrocities that they've commited in the course of history. The story deals with several real life horrors and war crimes and has descriptions of violence and torture.

Night Like This - this a sequel to a short story called Between the Spaces. They create an AU with the premise that the nations don't know about each other and are all resigned to a lonely eternity of watching everyone around them grow old and die. Germany and England discover each other by accident around the time of the first World War and decide to go on a quest to find others like them. This is probably my favourite story in the fandom. The development of the friendship and eventual relationship between Germany and England is wonderful, and the historical details and especially the rise of fascism in Europe create an intriguing and heart-breaking premise for the story. The only one I can remember (because I read it recently) would be Future Talk by Graphospasm. Actually, anything by Graphospasm is a good read but she mainly writes in the Yu Yu Hakusho fandom.

Future Talk is an OC story, along with quite a few of her other stories, but really is good. I found it on TVTropes, which is surprising because most of the recommended fics on there aren't that good, but you really should give this fic and anything written by Graphospasm a try.

Best fanfiction I've probably ever read, so much in-character joy and awesome plot and ffffnggj0igj AWESOMENESS!

Note: It's a Portal 2 fic, so helps to have played the game.

This fanfiction is SO loved by fans it's currently in the process of being turned into a feature length audiobook. That is the level of total joy it brings to people.
