Well, after "Stupid Hoe" and "A$$", I feel like there needs to be a thread dedicated to modern music that isn't horrible. Or just music in general that you finds cures the pain of the likes of Big Sean or Lil' Wayne's continued insistence that he CAN play the guitar. So here are some of mine...
1) So today I rediscovered this band...
I remembered hearing them once as a high school freshman and thinking "HOT SHIT, THIS ENERGY!" But, weirdly, I never listened to them again. Shame on me, because this Canadian power trio is a fucking revelation. Their drummer is insane, their live shows are insane. For further listening I would suggest "Shame", their cover of "Clampdown", (but maybe I just have a soft spot for that, seeing as it's one of my favorite songs by the Clash), and "Blind Paranoia". God, you can practically hear the sweat dripping off of every damn song.
The sad part is, I'm not sure how active these guys are any more. It seems they only put out two EPs, and the last one came out years ago. These guys deserve to be so much more famous than they are.
2) Odd Future
Odd Future is like a horrorcore Wu-Tang, a surreal, vulgar rap collective that consists of each members solo projects, plus countless side projects and duo records. Yeah, the song I posted is by just one member of Odd Future (full name: Odd Future Wolfgang Kill 'Em All), but Tyler, the Creator is the most dominant creative vision at work. As Allmusic described him, Tyler, the Creator is the RZA, and possibly GZA, of the group.
In the hip-hop scene, at least in Philly, these guys are pretty divisive. Like most horrorcore. I'm white so I'm pretty much required by law to like horrorcore, but those who don't like them find them gimmicky and are generally turned off by Tyler's odd flow (to some it sounds plodding and clumsy). I dunno, I think they're interesting, their beats and their general production are often very good, and even those who don't like them often hand them that.

Doublepost because I'm the only one that cares. But pretending you people care is the second best thing to you people actually caring.
Actually, I'm fishing for reasons to procrastinate right now.
Yeah, these are two other necro-rap acts, though a lot more underground than Odd Future. I dunno why I've been listening to stuff like this so much recently. Whatever...
SwizZz - Drop the Bomb
Yeah, a couple of their celebrity punchlines seem ultimately pointless (as much as I dislike Rick Ross, the McFlurry line in SwizZz's song seemed lazy), but their flow is interesting, their beats are nice (especially when you consider this is underground rap), and the sheer level of their energy is awesome.
I have to say, I like SwizZz better. He's more consistently imaginative. But I find both of them interesting.

I care! I am hesitant to post my choices though because I have a feeling no one else will like it. I am a crazy snob about art and animation but when it comes to music it all about "song make feel gud!" with me.

can you children stop posting video game music now? THANKS
Beyond Creation are a tech death metal band who released their debut last year and it was easily my favourite album of 2011. Listen to that god damn bass. LISTEN TO IT OH MY GOD. This is basically what Obscura's latest album should have been, rather than a boring rehash of their 2009 release only saturated with more Metalcore.
Astra really should hurry the fuck up and release a new album because it's been about 3 years since their last one now (which was also their debut). Very heavy psychedelia that I can't think of a similarity for, but it's really great and was my AOTY for 2009.
The Flower Kings are 100% unashamed 70's Prog worship fronted by a Swedish guy called Roine Stolt but I love them for it. Stolt is also in a supergroup alongside Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy, but has none of their obnoxious elements when it comes to song writing and/or performing and is actually pretty restrained by all accounts. His guitar work is really amazing, without ever getting too flashy and he's one of my favourite frontmen ever and has released dozens of hours of music in a pretty short time frame. Imagine Frank Zappa with none of the satire and humour, backed by a very talented Yes tribute band, basically.
I'll try to think of more but have been on a big Metal/Prog binge lately and can't think of anything else besides stuff from those two genres.
edit, there are Aesop Rock and The Tallest Man On Earth but I'm too lazy to youtube them just look those guys up yourself.

Ok, why the fuck didn't I know who these guys were? This is fucking awesome. Normally I prefer the kind of grimier death metal or black metal to technical death metal, but this is still pretty good.
And it reminded me to look up the Maryland Deathfest line-up this year. Still not sure if I'm going, but fuck... that line up looks awesome. Morbid Angel? Suffocation? Dying Fetus? Anvil?
And Rorschach got back together? And they're going to be at Deathfest? Why didn't I know about this? They got back together in 2009!
Oldschool metalcore.
Which it looks like there's going to be a lot of at Deathfest this year. Shit, I'm all over that. I'd go just for Hellbastard and Rorschach (well... maybe not, but y'know...)
EDIT BECAUSE DOOM/SLUDGE:
These guys are a relatively fresh, but awesome addition to the doom scene. Read an interview with them, they've all got this tongue-in-cheek Satanic cult stage persona thing going, and I think they're pretty funny. They're just going to get a lot bigger in the metal community, I think.
These guys are current leaders of the whole Southern sludge thing going on. In terms of popularity, they're just behind Mastodon. I fucking love them. They have two drummers, which is a sound I love, and I wish they would exploit a bit more, but whatever. I love me some Southern sludge.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the "Watch the Throne" album, but this song is fucking badass.
Also, Mitochondrion is fucking badass, too.
EDIT EDIT:
The latest Zac Hill project is cool as shit.

oh boy. I didn't know about this song until last week, when I began attending a jam evening with a parent who helps out at the school where I work, and they play this song on ukeleles. I dragged along my big old fretless bass and this is what happened (i was improvising and a bit tipsy - 2:30 is when it starts properly).
edit: the best part is at 4:40 when the last call bell is rung. The joys of playing in a pub!

Not sure how this'll go over with the largely metal (or else ironic, bounce-ya-dick-type) fans around here, but anyway, 'Monsoon', by Jack Johnson. My current jam.

Not quite as modern as some of the music here, but oh well. I've been on a huge They Might Be Giants kick recently. I can't stop listening to this one:
