tell me how to make a leader with personality

I am writing a fanfic in the one piece universe, where nearly every character has a colorful, exaggerated personality. However, the captain of the OC crew I'm writing about seems more like a stand in for the reader than Monke D. Luffy was. I want the captain to be different from Luffy, but I'm not sure how to go about giving him a personality while still making him a good leader.

Here's what he's done so far:
(1) Leaves the marines, stealing a devil's fruit on his way out
(2) Is captured by pirates, beats them all by himself with his new power (Without killing anyone), and takes over the crew
(3) Leads his crew in the robbery of another ship, expresses contempt towards an enemy who sends his men out into battle while avoiding danger until his men have been defeated.

Any advice?

You should try and study some of the personality traits of other captains in the OP universe, particularly those in the Eleven Supernovas. Luffy is more of a unique character in that universe because he is one of the few captains that ever kills anyone. It's probably not a good thing to make another character like him, so try looking at what lengths other captains are willing to go to in order to make it big.
