| Pinning an old lady to the ground is even WORSE of an idea. Old people often have VERY fragile bones. The last thing the guy wants to do is wind up crippling the old lady. The taser was probably the preferable option - at least partly because she was demanding it.
Nobody's saying that tasing somebody, especially an old lady, is a suitable approach, but sometimes you have to make a choice, and if they were trying to put cuffs on and she refused to allow them, they had to restrain her SOMEHOW.
The best option was the one that would damage her least.

| How to get old ladies to do what you want ( ) Get naked. Old people love men in uniforms. Cancel her subscription to AARP. Hide her blood glucose meter in the laundry. Try to startle her with a) a lizard b) plastic shit (or real shit) Moon her. She may just swoon. Call the National Guard. Again, old ladies love men in uniforms. Bring in Burt Reynolds. Naked. Or Barbara Streisand. Naked. Tell her Golden Girls is on. Offer to help her into the police car. Hold her hands. Call in Glenn Quagmire. | |

| The deal is, he didn't even try. Cyberwulf described it best- she pulled away once, officer immediately gave up and brought out the taser. THAT is just pathetic and ridiculous. If he had tried to pull her back and cuff her again, and she continuously refused to do so, I might be able to understand. But again, he didn't even try. He didn't even attempt to cuff her again, or pull her back, or anything like that. Oh yeah, she got angry and was yelling at him that totally means she was dangerous and there was nothing else he could do righto
I admit however she was being an asshole herself, just not enought to warrant a tazing.
Oh well, at the very least this'll hopefully lead to more scruitiny of police training and the policies behind how they use weapons and force so I guess some good will come out if it.

Which the cop forgot when he yelled at her ten seconds later to put her hands behind her back or she'd get tased again. Because of course she could move perfectly well after being hit with an electrical shock specifically designed to disrupt muscle control.

| I was once told by a local cop that tasers can disrupt heart rhythms. Does anyone know if that's true? | |

| It's technically true. But they'd need to hold it against her heart for at least a minute to cause any serious harm, which doesn't happen. They get training to use the things, you know. | |

| Freezer, I can't agree with you more. I'm becoming a cop and the requirements for using a tazer, dogs, or non lethal force is ONE warning. He warned her five times and she then put her hands on him and tried to push him into on coming traffic. That's assualt on a police officer (and more actually). He was perfectly within his rights to taze the bitch. Fuck the age, grandma got what she deserved.Edited to add: Yes being tazed*** hurts. Cops have to get that done to them in the academy. Something I'm really not looking forward too. As well as sprayed with pepper spray. | |

Just because something's a rule or requirement doesn't mean it's above criticism or deserves our respect.

Just because something's a rule or requirement doesn't mean it's above criticism or deserves our respect. Fair enough, but I myself think the old biddy got what she deserved no matter what her age. Edited because at 3 am my brain requires sleep.

Just because something's a rule or requirement doesn't mean it's above criticism or deserves our respect. True, but it's already been repeatedly confirmed that he warned her MORE than once. Obviously she thought he wouldn't do it, which was why she kept pushing her luck. I maintain, it must have hurt, but she pressured him into doing so. I wouldn't stamp around saying she got what she deserved and so on, but in this case he didn't have a lot of choice. He couldn't let her off just because she was a little old lady, and if she wouldn't come easily, that's what the taser and such are for. This isn't like that dog that got shot. She got her warnings. And she was pushing him about in traffic.

| I'm wondering if this lady is like those people who take pratfalls in convenience stores and such and then sue for their "injuries". She probably underestimated how much being tazed would hurt. | |

Aah, so we can expect you to throw your handcuffs down in a temper when a much smaller suspect pulls away from you once and then taze the shit out of them. - Harley Quinn hyenaholic wrote:

Did you look at the damn video? He attempted to handcuff her once, and she pulled away from him. So he tossed the cuffs on the ground and tazed her. Because he couldn't possibly have restrained a small woman who he managed to move halfway across the hard shoulder with one shove. - Quote :

She pushed him once and he barely moved. He pushed her once and practically threw her halfway across the hard shoulder. - Melissa wrote:

Yes Melissa, it was a wicked scheme to obtain free moneys by deliberately provoking a police officer into tasing her and then suing for incredible loots. You dumb shit.

Oh my god. A lot of people here (read, three) seem to be misinterpreting the purpose of the police force. Their job is to protect the public from danger and uphold the law. They are NOT meant to be the party that doles out punishments. That's the court's job. It being ~*standard procedure*~ and her being annoying doesn't mean that the cop can suddenly decide it's his place to essentially physically punish someone for pissing him off. Furthermore, rules or no, that cop should have learned to use some logical discernment when he was in that (or any) situation. The argument that a 72 year-old should be treated with the same physical manhandling as a 22 year-old is staggeringly dumb, considering that what a 22 year-old can take could fucking kill an older person. He's lucky she didn't have a pacemaker. Having a standard procedure doesn't excuse a person from using their brain.

There is a back button, a memberlist, and your internet history to help you out there. The handy thing about the internet vs. real life is that you don't have to remember absolutely every detail all on your own because it's right there. o_o
