Karl Rove, oiliest rat to ever slither on his corpulent belly through Washington, says Obama won the vote by using voter suppression.

Pretty big accusation to be slinging around there, Karl. Especially when you don't seem to know what 'voter suppression' means...

Karl Rove has nobody but himself to blame. Seriously, if he hadn't gone on such a slash-and-burn, dirty as hell campaign against McCain in the 2000 election's primaries there's a good chance McCain would've won in 2008. But then again, there's also a good chance he would've won in 2000 if he'd been picked over Dubya.

You are high. McCain was always his own man politically. He is mostly in the center and sides with the more moderate Democrats on a lot of issues that aren't related to defense or economy, and a few issues that are related to defense or economy.

You see, in the 2000 primaries when McCain was running against Bush, Rove used McCain's moderate positions to label him as a RINO. They pushed hard on that front in the open, and then used underhanded tactics with push polls using questions like, "If you knew that John McCain had fathered an illegitimate black baby, would this make you less likely to vote for him?" Since the McCains had adopted an abandoned Bangladeshi girl, it added credence to the rumor. That was far from the only lie being spread around the GOP base about him; in the 2008 election I saw Republicans accusing McCain of being responsible for the disaster on the USS Forrestal, when he'd had nothing to do with it and had barely escaped with his life. Karl Rove viciously and thoroughly poisoned the Republican base against McCain. He lost to Bush.

Afterward, since he'd been labelled a RINO, he started going along with the party on all the hot-button issues at the time, like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among independents and swing voters, this tarnished his image as a political free-thinker, and he lost a lot of respect from them.

By the time 2008 came around, the GOP base should've been thrilled to have McCain as their candidate, but instead, the response was a resounding "meh." They still saw him as a RINO and, if anything, wanted someone more conservative (at least fiscally) than Dubya. Since they basically saw him as a liberal in a Republican's suit, they -as usual- considered a vote for McCain more of a vote against Obama than anything else. The turnout was lackluster.

At the same time, the independents and swing voters lost all interest because they now saw McCain as just another neocon at best, at worst someone who'd sell out on his own ideals for political gain. They went overwhelmingly for Obama, and no amount of Sarah Palin going on about what a "maverick" John McCain was was going to bring them back. It didn't matter if he was too polite or too aggressive; he had no hope of being elected President even if he wound up running against Hillary Clinton.

Just because two events coincide doesn't mean there's a cause and effect relationship. Why do you think that he went along with the wars because of the 2000 primary race? To my knowledge, he's always been a hawk, albeit a somewhat prudent one. Most of America was on board with going into Afghanistan originally, and McCain seems like he'd have supported it regardless of political bullshit.

This is mostly because of the socially conservative part of the Republican party. You know, the part that should be largely ignored because they're ALWAYS going to vote Republican. McCain was fiscally conservative on many issues, but he also tried to play to the center by supporting fiscally irresponsible ideas during the 2008 election. This was a stupid idea because it annoyed actual conservatives, many independents didn't feel he was very sincere about those positions, and liberals were too busy furiously masturbating to thoughts of their Socialist Messiah to listen to anything McCain was saying anyway.

Obama in 2008 was pretty much a political perfect storm. Given the economy and political climate, Obama was able to use the fact that he was a complete unknown to his advantage and just spout "HOPE AND CHANGE" ad nauseum. Any Republican candidate would have been hard pressed to win in that scenario. However, McCain would have had a better chance if he stuck to fiscal conservatism and came out swinging, trying to light a fire, instead of the conciliatory pussyfooting he ended up bringing.

Now, there is no excuse for losing in 2012. It's all on Romney. He was a terrible fucking candidate. McCain at least has the excuse that the 2008 primary was a complete shit show. the only other halfway viable option was Huckabee (think about that for a minute). This primary had Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich as legitimate candidates, and either of them would have done a better job running against Obama. Herman Cain was brought down by laughably poor journalism aiming to ruin him, and Romney bought his way past Gingrich.

Except for the first debate, Romney was flat and lacked intensity through the entire goddamn campaign. Obama was a baseball on a tee and Romney tried to bunt.

I say voting for a third party should be grounds to legally revoke one's right to vote.

ETA: A point I forgot in my tl;dr post earlier. The RNC needs to fix their fucking nominating process. Goddamn Iowa and New Hampshire are too irrelevant in the general election (and too full of absolute morons) to be practically deciding the primary election. Set it up so that likely swing states (Florida and Ohio every goddamn election, Pennsylvania most likely, and so forth) all have their primaries early, preferably on the same day, and then have the states that are certain to go Republican have their primaries. At that point, you have your nominee. There is no benefit to having Californians or Yankees opine on the Republican's nominee, as they aren't at all in play when it actually counts.
