Todd Akin: "Doctors give abortions to women who aren't pregnant"

Apparently, that "legitimate rape" crack wasn't Todd Akin's first bout of foot-in-mouth disease, if this item from the good folks at Yahoo! News is any indication...

There is not enough facepalm in the universe for this kind of stupid. Women who are not pregnant never have abortions. Abortion is terminating a pregnancy. No pregnancy = no abortion.

I am of the opinion that Mr. Akin has no idea how babies are actually conceived. He strikes me as the kind who views sex s something you do once a week on Saturday night, an believes that babies are either magically found in cabbage patches or brought by storks.

No reputable doctor would perform an abortion on a woman who wasn't pregnant. There are things that could make a woman assume she was pregnant (late periods, tumors, etc.), but any doctor would do an ultrasound before doing an abortion, and if there was no sign of a baby, I imagine he'd send the woman to a gynecologist to see what was wrong.

But yeah, he and Michelle Bachman need to get together, given that they both spend most of their time talking out their assess. On the other hand, what do you expect from a man who believes that a woman's body can magically keep her from getting pregnant if she's raped?

From what I've read, the first thing abortion providers like Planned Parenthood do is have the woman take a pregnancy test to be sure she actually is pregnant, since, like Rabid Badger said, other things can make a woman suspect she's pregnant when something else is going on. (Case in point: one of my classmates in high school thought she was pregnant, and since she came from a very religious family, she decided to have an abortion so her parents wouldn't find out. A pregnancy test, however, showed that she was not pregnant, and the doctor who examined her found a mass of something, but it wasn't a fetus. What did it turn out to be? Ovarian cancer--about the last thing anyone would expect in a teenage girl.)

Isn't it time we have politicians take a competency test before they get voted into a Congressional or Senatorial position, just for the sake of saving everyone else from their terminal and irredeemable stupidity?

But it makes sense, really. If pregnancy begins two weeks before conception, then all sorts of women will be asking for pre-emptive abortion.
