It most mostly influenced by an "accidentally" edited 911 call that NBC kept playing over and over and over and over and over and over again. GAWD, I suppose I'll have to go find a link.

Here we go. (Kind of a dippy source, but it's the only website I found with the actual call and the edited horseshit on it). So, Zimmerman calls 911 concerned over behavior that would get me stopped by the police (walking around at night, alone, in the rain, acting strange), 911 operator asks what the guy Zimmerman is concerned about looks like, specifically asking about the man's race, and Zimmerman responds "He looks black."

Then NBC edits out everything between "About" and "He looks black," disingenuously making it seem like Zimmerman's primary concern was the man's race. Once a bunch of other people realized this, NBC apologized, calling it a "mistake." They supposedly fired the producer that made that edit, but last I heard, the producer hadn't been named, so no one can be sure if they did, in fact, fire him or her.

So, really, while it may very well turn out that Zimmerman is a overzealous vigilante, the whole "racial component" of this has been completely fabricated for ratings and ran off with by every Al Sharpton wanna-be in the country for the sake of their own attention.
