PostSubject: Weirdest covers   Weirdest covers EmptyFri Jul 03, 2009 2:41 am

I admit I like some strange songs. Wacky classics are some great stuff. but the line must be drawn somewhere. Like the Brady Kids singing American Pie. Or Kidz Bop.
But the weirdest song I ever heard was O Little Town of Bethlehem to the tune of House of the Rising Sun. I swear I am not lying. I actually heard it. And almost 15 years later, it creeps me out. How can you take a song about the birth of Jesus and put it to the tune of a song about a brothel? That's what that song is about, right?

"House Of The Rising Sun" is in what's called "common meter" which is exactly what it says on the tin, so you can actually sing a lot of hymns to that tune, including "Beneath The Cross Of Jesus" and "Amazing Grace."

"Stayin' Alive" by Ozzy Ozbourne and Dwezil Zappa
"Enter Sandman" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
A bluegrass version of Snoop Dogg's "Gin And Juice"
"The Immigrant Song" by Kallen Esperian.

Of course this thread would not be complete without a mention of Pat Boone's No More Mr. Nice Guy.

The BBC Radio show, "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue", the 'antidote to panel games' has as a regular feature 'one song to the tune of another'. It's absolutely hilarious. As is the rest of the show. Go listen, it's amazing.

I'm here to be the guy who talks about how he likes all the weirdass covers again and that you've got sticks up your reactionary asses. What's up?

You don't like bluegrass. That's totally chill. I, however, do like bluegrass, and the guys in that cover of Enter Sandman are actually displaying really great musicianship, particularly considering the materal they're covering.

Relax, man. Declaring the cover weird isn´t the same as declaring dislike for a cover. We actually already have a thread to riff on the covers we hate. I'm assuming this thread is more about talking about those covers that stick out because they do something wildly weird with the original - y'know, like, the multitudes of genre-transcending covers of Hit Me Baby One More Time that don't necessarily achieve the feat of being better than Britney's original (except for the Simple Plan one) - because if it's just another thread where we riff on covers that are bad, this thread would be both redundant and superfluous.

Enter Sandman isn't their best cover (I just picked it because it's more recognizable). Their covers of One and The Four Horsemen are much better. That being said, if I hated the cover I wouldn't have posted it.

And yes I like bluegrass dammit. Runs in the family. 🤘

As for covers of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time', I think this one is probably the best/worst:

Probably some of the weirder ones are people who do songs in a language other than the original one.

Case in point: Lolita No. 18.

Bad industrial goths! Bad! *gets the squirt bottle*

I knew Stevie Ray Vaughn did a cover of "Superstition" (It rocks, BTW.)

What I didn't know is that he and Stevie Wonder did a duet version:
