I admit I like some strange songs. Wacky classics are some great stuff. but the line must be drawn somewhere. Like the Brady Kids singing American Pie. Or Kidz Bop. But the weirdest song I ever heard was O Little Town of Bethlehem to the tune of House of the Rising Sun. I swear I am not lying. I actually heard it. And almost 15 years later, it creeps me out. How can you take a song about the birth of Jesus and put it to the tune of a song about a brothel? That's what that song is about, right?

"House Of The Rising Sun" is in what's called "common meter" which is exactly what it says on the tin, so you can actually sing a lot of hymns to that tune, including "Beneath The Cross Of Jesus" and "Amazing Grace."

Of course this thread would not be complete without a mention of Pat Boone's No More Mr. Nice Guy.

Sloth... is it a bad sign that the banjo makes me like that?

The BBC Radio show, "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue", the 'antidote to panel games' has as a regular feature 'one song to the tune of another'. It's absolutely hilarious. As is the rest of the show. Go listen, it's amazing.
I'm here to be the guy who talks about how he likes all the weirdass covers again and that you've got sticks up your reactionary asses. What's up?
You don't like bluegrass. That's totally chill. I, however, do like bluegrass, and the guys in that cover of Enter Sandman are actually displaying really great musicianship, particularly considering the materal they're covering.

Relax, man. Declaring the cover weird isn´t the same as declaring dislike for a cover. We actually already have a thread to riff on the covers we hate. I'm assuming this thread is more about talking about those covers that stick out because they do something wildly weird with the original - y'know, like, the multitudesofgenre-transcendingcovers of Hit Me Baby One More Time that don't necessarily achieve the feat of being better than Britney's original (except for the Simple Plan one) - because if it's just another thread where we riff on covers that are bad, this thread would be both redundant and superfluous.

Enter Sandman isn't their best cover (I just picked it because it's more recognizable). Their covers of One and The Four Horsemen are much better. That being said, if I hated the cover I wouldn't have posted it.
And yes I like bluegrass dammit. Runs in the family.
As for covers of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time', I think this one is probably the best/worst:
In principle, it would fit like a glove; The Velvet Underground was a massive influence on a lot of bands with its artsy, sludgy, pre-grunge sound in a lot of places, and the Melvins are no exception.
So, the song starts out sounding exactly like the original. Opening notes? Same as the original. Buzz Osbourne sings the first line - "Shiny shiny, shiny boots of leather" - then everything explodes into what feels like an eternity of pure aimless cacophonous noise. Literally; no lyrics, no melody, nothing. I have no problems with noise music. I actually quite enjoy the occasional Merzbow and so on. But this non-cover really pissed me off because "Venus in Furs" is one of my all-time favorite songs and I was interested in hearing a take on it by the Melvins, who I have been trying to get into.

Edit: I found it! It's by San Antonio band Two Tons of Steel [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (The MP3 player has several songs on it; select the second from the end.) (Judging by the list of venues they're playing, I wouldn't put much stock in this band.)

Remember Ben Folds Five and their feel-good summer hit "Brick"? Yeah, the happy little song about a couple breaking up after dealing with an abortion. This song was practically made for a '90s-style dance mix with a new echo-y vocalist, a slightly faster tempo, and a generic '90s synthesizer accenting the chorus, all underscored by a generic '90s BOOM-tsch-BOOM-tsch beat.

This song reminds me of this quote:
Quote :
Look Tubby, how many times do we have to tell you? This studio only wants happy songs by happy teens with happy problems!
IIRC I also remember hearing something about the director of the original Brick video saying the song was "Too somber" and wanted to lighten the mood by dressing the band in blue tuxedos.

I am NOT kidding. It wasn't really bad, just... what the fuck.
Let's do some math. Ramones+Country/western=EPIC PHAIL & DO NOT WANT It's almost as bad as that country version of "That's All" by Genesis. :red:
