I'm curious, who did he expect to receive this grace from? Whose approval was he so desperately seeking?

Well, he sure didn't end up the martyr he envisioned himself as. Apart from anything, he's not dead, and on top of that he's gonna have hell in prison for all those kids he killed.

For what it's worth, that is a new prison rather than a 'typical' prison and somehow I don't think he'll be going there. He's more likely to go to an asylum.

From what I've been told, they can extend the sentence indefinitely if he's found to still be "a danger to society." Sort like what happens with most "life sentences" here, but in reverse.

"Jihad" was originally a word that rarely meant physical war. It was a war of wills, both within the Muslim himself or out in the marketplace of ideas (i.e. Jihad is holding your own in a debate).

I'm not a wholesale defender of Islam. I just want to share what I know.

Extremists will always take any line to the context they want it to mean and force it to mean just that...

I recall reading a book about "queens" in the Muslim world (very few of them, and most of them ruled through their sons, but damn they were awesome). I don't have it on hand to double check the text, but the book was named The Forgotten Queens of Islam by Fatima Mernissi. Now this is from memory, but I THINK the whole kamikaze thing was invented by a man who the book described along the lines of "so evil the Devil himself would hate him" some time before 1000 AD, in Egypt. The man in question aided in the young Sultan's slip of sanity and turned him into an absolute nutcase dictator who thought he was Allah. When the Sultan suddenly disappeared under mysterious circumstances his sister took over, and everyone was so happy to be rid of the crazy one that they didn't even care they had a woman on the throne.

I'm seeing a pattern: everyone who suffers deserves it somehow.

Nobody is perfect, but there are damn few people in the world that could possibly deserve to suffer dying like that.

Makes me ashamed to be mostly conservative.
