I'm a complete and utter ass when it comes to music (and books, movies, television...), I'm afraid. I've got categories for "stuff that I like" and "stuff that's good". I can dislike stuff that's good and like stuff that sucks.

Skye Edwards's cover of "Feel Good Inc."
Don't get me wrong, Edwards. Love your music, and you're an amazing singer, but please. Just....no.

Well...I don't know about that. Jim Steinman is a great song writer and a talented pianist, but he just can't sing very well. I liked both Celine Dion's and Meat Loaf's versions.

Since when is Jim Steinman a woman? Elaine Caswell was the vocalist on the original version.

My most disappointing one: Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross, "Endless Love". You would think those two would be able to knock a classic love ballad out of the park. Maybe they could have, if someone hadn't had the bright idea to turn them loose to try and make each other's heads explode with VOLUME!
It's like they thought "You know that part at the end where Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie cut loose with the power notes? Wouldn't it be awesome if we sang the entire song like that?"
As for simply balls-out bad:
Thread over.

Sorry, I must have been thinking of "Rock and Roll Dreams". Jim did the vocals on that one.

My Chemical Romance and their revolting version of "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen. And to add insult to injury, they used the wrong bassline(they used the "Ice Ice Baby" bassline, with the extra note).
And while this may not count as a complete cover, "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock. I mean, he ripped-off two songs at the same time! :bitchslap:

But this?
This made me very very unhappy.
Yeah, ok, no. Maybe if it had been another song I might have dug it. Because the singer's voice was interesting, and the guitar riff was ok, but Pink Floyd? Comfortably Numb... my second favorite Pink Floyd song ever? NO.

The original, because damn it, listening to both just makes the suck stand out more.
The original version of the Simpson cover was a duet with her then-husband Nick Lachey. His vocals were cut from the song at the last minute before it was released as a single. Having seen the recording session for the song, I can guess why he was cut out of the song. He sings infinitely better than she does, and I guess her daddy didn't want his tone-deaf meal ticket getting shown up.

While were on the subject of bad covers by Jessica Simpson, let's not forget her awful re-make of "These Boots Were Made Walkin'" originally by Nancy Sinatra. How a true girl-power song gets reduced to a total slutfest is beyond all logic(which Jessica severly lacks).
Billy Ray Cyrus did a pretty good cover of "Boots" back in the '90s, which he used to do in concert all the time. As to the Simpson version, while the song is shit on toast, the music video is even worse. There are many women I wouldn't mind seeing wash a car in a bikini. She sure as hell ain't one of them. And the damn thing plays like a porno rather than a music video.

I might get ragged no end as usual, but I really don't care. I just had the misfortune of running into a band named Sepultura. They seem to believe that being loud and obnoxious can cover up a lack of talent.

Last night I caught a glimpse of this commercial for some beach resort called Atlantis that sounded like this cutesy little diddy about a kid snorkeling and swimming with sting rays and chilling on the beach... only to realize a few bars in that it was actually the tune of "Anyone Else But You" by the Moldy Peaches. Only the "Doo doo doo doo" part remained intact.
This is the only time an advertising-specific remake has made me cringe more than Target's use of "Every Day" by Buddy Holly.

Ah, here's another band that has the attitude of "if you can't be good, be loud and obnoxious." They're called Null Dynamo, and they're a lot like Seplatura. Here they butchered a Duran Duran tune called The Chauffeur. If you've heard the original, you probably are thinking "that kind of style really wouldn't work with this song." Well, you're right. BTW, the video is a bit NWS.

In this corner: Peggy Lee singing "Fever" live, in a single take, onstage with two men. Dated dress, dated cleavage, dated hairstyle, and all she does is stand there snapping her fingers as she sings. And just about everybody in the audience wants to be either Peggy Lee . . . or her microphone. Rrrrrrr. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
In this corner: Madonna singing "Fever" live, in a single take, onstage with two men. Madonna prudently adds some visual aids to her performance because, let's face it, her talent as a chanteuse is to Peggy Lee's as Keiran Halcyon's talent is to J.K. Rowling's. Apparently, in Madonna's view, the song is about a horny robot stripper dominatrix who cannot tell the difference between the singular and plural "you" and finally catches fire due to an irreconcilable cucumber error please reboot bzzt. And just about everybody in the audience applauds the live-almost-sex-show and immediately forgets about the soundtrack, which was probably the point. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The music video version I originally saw (not the one with eleventy billion Madonna costume changes and wubba-wubba camera work--the other one) apparently had a tighter budget, so the production team filmed one exotic dancer, not three, against some freeware kaleidoscopic wallpaper, and attempted to hide Madonna's failure to actually deliver the song with a drum track so loud you couldn't hear her voice. I think the live version is worse because Madonna appears to think she is doing a good job.

So does this mean she wants to be a personal Jesus?
It seems that every hit has been butchered at one time or another. It seems to me that Hillary Duff is covering up her lack of originality by trying to be so TEH SMECKSY... frankly, I find her as arousing as an accounting textbook.
Here's something new: A three-year-old singing along with The Dead Milkmen's "RC's Mom."

Maybe it's just me, but seeing a three-year-old singing a song about spousal abuse isn't cute.
