She said Ms Tran told her a Vietnamese fortune teller told the couple the person who had stolen the handbag was close to them, and was someone they loved.

So... uhhhhh. They could have just asked her, maybe? Huh.

Okay, going through her stuff is also illegal but couldn't they have just done that? You know, instead of beating her and threatening those close to her?

I'm sure that would have occurred to them, had these people not been stupid enough to believe a fortune teller.

Fortune teller who only said what was more likely: that a family member living in the house did it.

Pfft. Going to a fortune teller, what a pair of dimwits. To find what's been lost or stolen, you need to repeat the Sequeri thirteen times - everybody knows it.

(This was later translated to the more elegant 'Tony, Tony, come around...' which was easier because it was in English and didn't have to be repeated 13 times. Also, it allowed the user to customize the chant, which is always good fun.)

You'd think that she could have used her mystical powers to, y'know, name the exact person doing the thieving.

This reminds me a little bit of the McDonald's strip search case. But somehow worse in some ways because these people were close to the girl.
