Naveen Kumar, a 29-year-old trader, had apparently used Maheswari as his
golden goose, wangling an air-conditioner, motorbike and all the furniture at his home out of his father-in-law in the three years since his marriage.

At the same time, he and his family constantly abused Maheswari, 26, who
could not stop putting on weight and had grown to 140kg when she was
murdered, the police said.

Kumar apparently saw his wife’s obesity as a matter of deep shame and had forced her to undergo an abortion for fear that she might deliver an
overweight baby. She was not allowed to meet neighbours and relatives,
or to step out of home in the daytime.

Officers said Maheswari’s father, a municipal councillor, would step in and try to appease his son-in-law with more dowry every time Kumar quarrelled with his wife over her girth.

In her dying declaration from hospital, Maheswari accused her husband,
mother-in-law and sister-in-law of dousing her with kerosene, setting
her on fire and pushing her into the kitchen at their home in Yemmiganur, 270km southwest of Hyderabad. Circle-inspector Jayachandra Reddy said the statement was given in the presence of local tehsildar Lakshmaiah.

The man who murdered her was beaten up by her relatives (no surprise there). I can't say I'm sorry.

Oh, and another sad thing is, I read about this on Dimensions, and the posters there are talking about the abuse that women they know have gone through or are going through by their husbands because of their weight. :(

Damn... that poor woman. I'm glad she was able to at least make an identification of who did it (apart from her husband), but still...

Uh, her husband and the other murderers didn't intend to push her into the kitchen to try and put out the fire. That was to make it look like an accident.

To divert your attention away from the main event- that a woman was viciously burned to death because she was too fat for her husband to enjoy fucking- and push its agenda- that people are getting too damn fat for anyone to enjoy fucking.

Jesus., you're likely quite right - the people on Dims thought the exact same thing.

Also, I would think that eating whole-grain rice would be fairly healthful, in and of itself. :scratch:

I would say it was a thyroid problem, or something else with her metabolism, unfortunately. =/

Likely, it's the stuff put on/in the rice rather than (or as much as) the rice. Extra starches plus the fats and calories coming from the preparation methods and the toppings, maybe?

But yeah, thyroid could be an issue as well, like Raine said.

Her poor family, it looks like her father at least was trying to help her. Right?

Possibly. You could always take it that he was embarrassed by her as well and didn't want to suffer the shame of having his daughter sent back to him - hence why he was willing to give all those items away so it would keep it from happening. Hopefully your interpretation is the right one though.

Oh my God, this is just so horrible. If he didn't want to be with her he could have simply filed for divorce. Also he must have been abusing her for a long time before killing her, and abuse can cause people to eat more and put on weight. What a horrible man! I can't get over how his family helped to murder her in such a terrible way. People like this make me lose faith in humanity.
