Yeah, Blu-Ray won against HD-DVD. It's kinda losing against DVD though.

| To be fair, it's losing against DVD in the same way that DVD lost against VCR. DVD (and similar formats) actually came out in like the mid 80's. However, it took people quite a long time to actually adopt DVD to the point that VCR tapes and machines could stopped being sold commonly. If anything, the current war is between disc based format and digital, but that's just starting up.
Same thing happened with Cassette/CD. And really, the only reason cassettes took off the way they did was the portability issue (over 8-track and records). It was the first time we weren't tied to a massive chunk of hardware in order to listen to audio on demand (obv. transistor radios were portable, but limited to whatever was on the radio)

| DVD was invented in 1995.
Also, it definitely took a while for DVD to be adopted in favor of VHS, but that's because of price point. Blu Ray players are rapidly dropping in price. The PS3 used to be the cheapest one at $499; I saw one at Wal-Mart yesterday for $130.

I think the price drop recently has a lot to do with the slow adoption of DVD initially, honestly. They learned their lesson and all that. By the same token, enough format changes have happened within our adult lives that people are wary of having to replace entire collections again. I know I have replaced (and added to it) once already, and I probably won't do it again. That is not to say, however, that I don't own a PS3 and a handful of BluRay movies.

| That and an upgrade from DVD to Blu-Ray is considerably less of a change than an upgrade from VCR to DVD. You don't save any space, the basic technology is the same to the user (tape degrades significantly with use, you can't make perfect tape-to-tape copies, most of the storage media is inaccessible at any one time), and you need a pretty good TV to notice the improvements that the increased resolution brings. Fine if you have the money and want to spend it. | |

I know someone who does occasionally, and he's still got less than a dozen. It's one of those things for people who don't like movies, since at the price point you could have gotten a far higher number for the same cost. At least, that's how it works for my friend: rare is the movie he actually likes.

That, and Blu-Ray players play normal DVDs so you're not forced to buy everything on the new medium when you upgrade your player. And DVDs are still cheaper than Blu-Ray discs and, as you say, you don't see the benefit of the latter unless you've got a good TV.

| Not to mention, the traditional first adopter - porn - has has been intentionally slow to move to Blu-Ray, mostly because hi-def exposes unsightly flaws and blemishes that standard-def leaves invisible (things like stretch marks, scars and assorted pock marks)
That and filming in hi-def costs a lot more.

| Porn didn't have a say-so this time around. Sony really worked the market to boot out HD-DVD. | |

| Actually, Sony relented on porn specifically to keep HD-DVD from getting that leg-up. Then the bigger porn producers (Wicked, Vivid, Private) cranked out a few Blu-Ray discs and thought "This isn't as great as we'd hoped."
I do think they're starting to release remastered "classics" like Deep Throat on Blu-Ray.

I'm not convinced that this actually is happening... Unlike all the previous format wars, there is compatability between Blu-Ray and DVD... Granted, it's only one way... You'll need a Blu-Ry player, but once everyone has one, DVD will still be a valid format. Right now, you've got Blu-Ray for all the people who can apreciate it, and cheap DVDs for everyone else. Once/if the Blu-Ray player becomes the dominant reader for every household, the'll still be Blu-Ray disks for people who want them, and cheap DVDs for everyone else. There really is no reason that the two formats can't live side-by-side... To be honest, the next format war is between any storage media and direct downloads/hard-disk space... Hell, half of my fellow students carry a small library of films to uni every day on their USB sticks.

They don't need to be. They just have to be audible, and detailed enough to see what's going on. If you know you can't expect quality, why not go all out on quantity?

| And the latest incident of Sony's Foot/Mouth interface problem concerns the latest Update, released ironically on April 1st, though it isn't a joke... (The update involves the deletion of the Install Other Operating System option, that was available on the PS3 crossbar under system settings... Normally, this would be a Linux based OS, such as Ubuntu, although if youre a extreme masochist, you could try a version of Windows...). As a result of this, Amazon U.K has had to fork out a £85 refund to a customer who bought the original 60Gb version of the PS3, that argued that Sony's action violated the British Sale of Goods Act, in that the action voided the "as described" & the "fit for purpose" clauses of the act... (Note, Under U.K trading standards law, the seller, not the manafacturer, is liable if any such event's do happen, and the time limit for such liability, is 6 years from the original purchase date...). Needless to say, Amazon U.K at least, is displeased to say the very least at Sony's action... | |
