PostSubject: Challenge: take a well-known badfic and re-work its premise into something good!   Sun Jan 17, 2010 7:57 am

How many times have you read a badfic and thought "If I threw out the bad spelling and grammar, the canon-raping characterization, the bad prose, the plot holes and the blatant airing of the author's opinions/beliefs/fetishes, I could make a good fic out of this premise"? Well, it's time to do exactly that. I got thr idea for this challenge from my aborted plan to write an exciting version of Tuxedo Mark's Mobile Suit Gundam Tournament.

Rules

1. Choose your badfic - the badder the better.
2. Write down a premise worded such that it describes the badfic but doesn't require any of the elements that make it bad.
3. Write down a short summary of the badfic indicating how it implements the premise in a bad way.
4. Write down a new summary describing a fic that implements the premise in an interesting way.
5. (Optional) Write (part of) the fic!

Examples

Mobile Suit Gundam Tournament Reloaded
Premise: Important political questions are settled by battles between Gundams piloted mostly by lesbians.
Old Summary: In 2007, a Gundam tournament is held on Earth to decide which country will rule the world; every country on Earth goes along with this. The Gundams are all boringly similar, as are the large cast of lesbian pilots, their friends and the fight/sex scenes. Much time is devoted to generic, uninteresting scenes of people eating, packing or talking about their author-derived opinions.
New Summary: Several hundred years in the future, wealthy aristocrats in a space-dwelling civilization bet on Gundam battles between their designated champions to settle disputes. A naive new pilot is seduced by a sexy aristocrat who is up to no good into becoming her champion, while another pilot and her patron oppose the villain's plans. Numerous scenes of lavish banquets are used to show the wealth and decadence of the aristocracy, contrasted with the rather more spartan lifestyle of the masses. The characters frequently discuss moral philosophy.

The Girl Who Lived Reloaded
Premise: A female version of Harry trains in the wilderness to learn druidic magic (which involves nudity) to use against Voldemort, and forms a relationship with Cedric Diggory.
Old Summary: Spanning all seven books of the canon, Rose Potter learns ninja martial arts and other hax abilities in addition to her druidic magic, which starts as an excuse for her to prance around Hogwarts naked (but with an amulet which produces essentially all the effects of wearing clothes). She belittles and browbeats nearly every character and consistently 'improves' on things Harry did, yet somehow utterly fails to change the storyline from book to book.
New Summary: The canon storyline proceeds mostly unchanged except for largely cosmetic changes caused by Harry being a girl named Rose, until book 4 when Cho Chang becomes the Hogwarts Triwizard champion instead of Cedric Diggory and dies at the end. The story proper opens at the end of book 5, when Rose and Cedric (unlike Harry and Cho) are still dating. Rose gets put in touch with the druids by Remus Lupin - the druids are relatively friendly with werewolves, which is why they didn't get involved in the first conflict against Voldemort; no-one trusted them. Druidic magic mostly consists of shapeshifting and plant/animal manipulation, and (supposedly, at least) requires "getting back to nature" in a very hardcore way, including nudity. There is no getting around any problems with this using magic items, either, though once they can shapeshift druids can avoid social difficulties if they don't mind remaining in animal forms around 'civilized' people.

The only problem is finding a fic that does not make my brain melt while finding WTF its about.

Er, I'm doing that - at my usual crawling pace. The fic is A Werewolf's Love, an improbable Werewolf!Draco/Hermione complete with Abusive!Lucius, Smart!Crabbe&Goyle, Slutty!Ginny, Rapist!Blaise. The author's tantrums (from Chapter 6 onwards) are priceless.
My effort can be found at The Pit of Voles

EDIT: Duh, I forgot to take the challenge.
Quote :
A Werewolf's Love Reloaded
Premise: Draco is bitten by a werewolf and experiences a paradigm shift.
Old Summary: While trying to keep his new condition hidden from his classmates, Draco finds himself drawn towards Hermione, who soon finds out about his secret. When she confront him about his lycanthropy the two instantly hook up. However Hermione becomes so distressed by her emotional turmoil that she starts skipping lessons and shopping at Hot Topic and lets herself be caught off-guard and raped by Blaise Zabini. Meanwhile, the Gryffindors are angry at her for sleeping with the snake in the grass and plot a fearsome revenge.
New Summary: While trying to keep his new condition hidden from his classmates, Draco witnesses their prejudice and narrow-mindedness. Soon he finds he can barely stand their company. But there's someone who doesn't seem to share the bigotry. Will Draco be able to find someone with whom he can be his true self?

This sounds really interesting; is there no chance of your reviving it? And was the fact that most/all of the Gundam pilots were women have an explanation behind it, or is it just pure coincidence?

I might give it a whirl at some point for fun between other writing projects.

In canon, there's no particular bias towards female pilots (every main Gundam series protagonist to date has been male, though there are usually a number of Action Girls in every series), and in Tuxedo Mark's fic, most of the pilots were actually male, it was just that the main characters (the pilots from the UK, US, Canada and Japan and their friends) were all lesbians. If I had to come up with an in-story explanation for most pilots being female, it would probably have something to do with physiological differences that made them better at resisting G-forces or something like that.

Salvation War
Premise: It's officially the Rapture, but instead of Armageddon, humanity kicks ass, and ruins everyone's shit. Also Heaven is made up of as big a douches as the guys in Hell.
Old Summary: Humanity, as replaced by infallible Mary Sues, is busy being totally awesomely boring, while the author is too busy jerking off to military equipment. There is no shock from affirmation of the existence of God, no reaction to the impending end of the world, and Hell has a Bronze Age army.
New Summary: It's officially the Rapture, and any person meeting a certain level of belief in God, gods, or a spiritual leader goes poof. Population of most countries now totals 3-10 millions, except for China, that sits at 200. What follows is a wave of suicides, and catastrophes as planes are now lacking pilots. The broken governments scramble to get their shit together and get the message out to the remaining people to gather at a single specific city somewhere in the country. Heaven has scooped up everyone it considered worth saving, and cut the connection with Earth, which served as a sort of bridge from Hell to Heaven, because Hell has gotten too strong for them. Jesus is not amused, and returns to Earth before the connection is severed fully to help humanity stop the forces of Hell. Meanwhile forces of Hell invade China, which is the apparent biggest threat, kicking it off with poison gas, and Africa, to hunt people for fun with anti-materiel sniper rifles. Shortly after, morality goes out the door, and it's deemed necessary for the "countries" to become communistic militaristic totalitarian police states, where every single person is a combatant, the concept of money is nonexistent, and the state fully controls the economy and war effort. Massive, desperate, last fight ensues.

I like that take on TSW, especially the idea of a breach between Jesus and his dad. It gives an interesting shades-of-grey spin on the Bible, as opposed to "hurr durr religion is dumb".

Artemis's Lover Reloaded
Premise:
Oscar, a hermaphrodite, falls in love with Artemis, a talking cat associated with the Sailor Scouts
Old Summary: In just a few badly-written scenes with terrible dialogue, Artemis goes from being freaked out by Oscar's love letter to wanting to have sex with him, and then their love is accepted by everyone as wonderful and good.
New Summary: The story is told in alternating viewpoints from Artemis and Oscar, and it is a slowly building psychological horror fic of increasing creepiness, with Oscar clearly showing characteristics of an unreliable narrator as well as characteristics of a seriously disturbed stalker. The sex scenes and scenes of Oscar rescuing Artemis and having tender fluffy moments are all dreams or delusions on Oscar's part, and from Artemis's viewpoint we learn that those events either didn't happen or happened in very different ways. Oscar's obsession turns out to be some kind of Negaverse scheme, and after a typical battle by the Sailor Scouts with the real enemy, Oscar returns to normal, with no obsession for Artemis, and everyone is happy.

Angel of Death Revisited

Premise:
Mikki, a Mary Sue in Auschwitz has a loving relationship with Joseph Mengele

Old Summary: Mikki goes to Auschwitz, has passionate affair with Mengele, ends up being his 'one true love' somewhere Simon Weisenthal cries over this one.

New Summary: Mikki is one of Mengele's "experiments" and due to the cruelty and horror of his experiments and with Stockholm Syndrome, believe his interest is a love affair with him and dies in the gas chamber while he watches not caring a thing about her.

I know, I'm not doing this right.

Draco Dormiens
Premise: The Harry Potter series now revolves around Draco Malfoy, revealing his inner world.
Old Summary: (Nothing official that I can find) Draco is now a leather-wearing, sarcastic, angsty anti-hero worthy of appreciation and empathy.
New Summary: What if Derek Zoolander had magical powers?

BLOODY EPIC.

"Dad... I think I have... magicalitis! *kaff kaff*"

"So my dad was like, "Hey Draco, you want to be a Deatheater?" And I was like, "No way, dad, that's stupid. But... then I thought about it. And you know, Voldemort was really in 15 years ago, and like, right now the 80's are coming back. Dark magic is totally retro-cool right now! You know, Blaise? So I said "ok", and now he wants me to kill Dimbiblydore, and I was like "No problem." But then I realised that it was really, really hard." *pout*

"I got punched in the face by Weasly today. But it's ok, because he doesn't have any money."

"WHAT DO YOU THINK I AM? SOME KIND OF MAGICAL KILLING PERSON? A MAGIKILLER?"

"Potions fiiiiiight!"

PostSubject: Fic Submission!   Sun Mar 27, 2011 1:59 am

Wow, I just finished one of these, based on the fic sporked in this thread.

Fandoms: Supernatural/Twilight
Premise: Castiel falls in love with Bella Swann while her ex-boyfriend Edward is in hot pursuit attempting to kill her after murdering her parents.

Old Title: Protective Love
Old Summary: "Castiel Is in love with Bella a demon hunter who swore to protect her as his friend's dying wish , Bella is in love with her Guardian Angel but can he keep her safe"
What actually happens is Bella is rescued by Cas, they fall in love in a day, Edward is after her, she learns to hunt, they kill Lilith then Edward and live happily ever after.

New Title: Ramblin' Spirit Man vs. the Mary Sue
New Summary: John Winchester, watching over his family as a ghost, is deeply suspicious of the sudden change in them. After identifying new addition Bella as a Mary Sue, he tries to hunt her down before his boys lose their personalities for good.

----
I based mine off the fic to the letter (until the twist ending, anyway). The writing was mainly to snark the fic and point out flaws/discrepancies, and it didn't take too long to write, so don't expect anything too poetic. It may even help to follow along with the badfic as you read mine, which is how I wrote it.

I think even our old friend, Legolas by Laura, could be worked up into a usable fic. No, hear me out. In the hands of a competent writer (i. e., anyone but Laura), this could become a decent fantasy work. You'd have to move it out of the LOTR fandom and make it an original fantasy, but it would still work.

Old title: Legolas

Old premise: Legolas finds an abandoned baby in the woods one day and then he brings her home and raises her for ten years until the Dark Lord kidnaps her and wipes her and bets her and then injets her with posion.

New title: something like Child of Destiny (sorry, Legolas)

New premise: She was found abandoned in the woods as an infant, the only clue to her identity a note attached to her blanket: Her name is Laura. Keep her safe. Ten years later, she has mysteriously grown to maturity, and shows signs of developing strange powers. Then one night, she is kidnapped by dark forces, and a hero must first unravel the mystery surrounding her before he can rescue her and save the kingdom.

Or some such. It's just an idea at this point, but if I'm hard up for a writing project in the future, I may take a crack at it.

I can't help but notice that despite the 'the badder the better' advice, nobody's trying to make Celebrian or Agony In Pink good.

Because it's IMPOSSIBLE.

I wonder if it would be possible to tone down the sexual content in the former maybe--or at least mask it; say that she'd been captured and horrible things had happened that she didn't like to recall, perhaps explore the beginnings of Stockholm Syndrome....that might be interesting.

Though of course it would require a re-read.

Agony in Pink I'm not touching. No way, nuh-uh.

Celebrian could definitely be done as psychological horror. It would, however, have to be much, much shorter. I'm with you, Sheba, Stockholm syndrome might be quite interesting.

Hm. AiP might be redone as the Pink Ranger having (not nearly so vivid) flashbacks or perhaps even outright hallucinations. E.g., one moment, her arm pit is being burned, and the next she's sitting at her breakfast table, scratching her underarm bloody.

I'm taking one of my older fics, and while not technically a badfic there was a lot to it that could be improved now that I know more about everything.

And I'm polishing its general premise into something much improved, at least I hope so.

Not quite a badfic, so to speak, but how about those Maradonia chronicles? A well written version of those might be interesting.
