Man steals painting of Virgin Mary. The reason why is much much worse.

It was to finance an abortion for a 14 year-old he was accused of raping.

How expensive is an abortion? Surely not $100,000. There have got to be easier criminal acts that could have worked, if this guy is so determined to be an asshole.

I hope the girl is doing okay. What apparently happened to her is bad enough without being pressured to have an abortion and whisked off to Mexico.

Maybe he shouldn't have raped her in the first place. Then he wouldn't be in this mess.

According to Planned Parenthood, it can be from $350 to $900. It costs more the further along you are. Hospitals cost more than health centers. Probably not up to $100,000. Maybe the guy wanted some cash left over to buy condoms? I don't know.

Okay, he wanted her to have an abortion in Mexico. It would have been quicker to kill her himself instead of slowly dying of blood loss or infection from a botched abortion. Is abortion legal in Mexico? It is a heavily Catholic country. People freaked out when their divorced President remarried.

The story says he only sold it for $3K. Which makes sense- he wasn't paying for an abortion in a vacuum, he needed to pay for transportation, food, lodging, etc. etc. Also, I doubt that fences are going to give you anything approaching market price- stealing something that valuable was a good way to get enough money, with a margin for error, without having to haggle or shop around.

Of course, there's the detail that we don't know how the girl feels about having the baby but it doesn't look like she was gonna get much choice.

Sorry but i think 14 years is kind of young to have sex - Most 14 year olds aren't very adult. In Finland the age of Consent is 16 as well and we are quite liberal as well, though not as liberal as Netherlands.

Not saying what's right or wrong, just saying what is. Personally, I don't think there's one exact age since individual people mature at different rates. But, you are right that most 14 year olds aren't very adult. I knew girls in high school who would sleep with older men and threaten to tell the police if the girl didn't get what she wanted. No angels on either side here.

Being a huge bitch is totally just like stealing a priceless painting to pay for the girl you knocked up's abortion to cover your ass.

I tend to think 16 is a pretty safe age. People mature at different rates, but 14 is a bit young. But regardless of legality, I have to seriously question the decision of an adult to sleep with a young teen, even a mature one.

And even if this girl consented, I still sympathize with her. She's 14, and he's a thief trying to whisk her off to Mexico for an abortion.

As a result, I suspect that he will be staying a very, very long time (up to 70 years) in a Nebraskan jail....
