| Good thing I got out while the getting was good. First kids aren't taught to spell, then they aren't taught history. What do they want? Just make school into one long Bible study? (Assuming it's OK to teach kids how to read.) | |

Melissa, I know you get this a lot, but you're a dumbass. Kids have to be taught to school according to the Texas curriculum as well as history. And yes, it's okay for kids to learn how to read because that's part of the TAKS test kids have to pass in order to go to the next grade. Learn something about your state's education system. It might do you some good than making stupid assumptions.

I was commenting on how poorly history was taught and that spelling practically isn't taught at all and that people are trying to push their religion into the classroom.

I was commenting on how poorly history was taught and that spelling practically isn't taught at all and that people are trying to push their religion into the classroom. Melissa, you really are a fucking idiot. Firstly, it is the TAKS test. I know several educators in Texas, and I've had to take the stupid TAKS test myself. You apparently aren't up-to-date with the current system because your head is too far up your ass to realize what's going around you. I only went through the Texas public school system my senior year in high school, and I learned that there are many opportunities for the students to get an advanced education. You could graduate by barely passing and passing the TAKS, or you could graduate with many AP credits and get a head-start in college. My mom is an elementary school teacher and she knows how to teach. There's a certain curriculum for each grade level. The kids have to meet certain requirements before going to the next grade level. Teachers work with what they have. Yes, all of them hate the TAKS test because sometimes that's all that they're teaching. However, the TAKS test involves reading, writing, math, history, and science. You have to reach a certain score in order to pass. If not, then proceed to the next grade level. Please do us all a favor and shut the fuck up since you don't know what you're talking about. (Surprise, surprise)

| Not to defend Melissa, but the TAAS test was the standard before the TAKS. They changed it sometime in the mid-90s after I graduated. | |

| There are too many tests now. Politicians only say tests are getting easier because they don't want kids to be getting smarter (aka smarter than them). Just because THEY couldn't pass the tests.
And what's the point of taking SATS at 8 years old?

I know it was the TAAS, but now it's the TAKS. The fact that Melissa doesn't know shit like that when it's in the local news, shows how naive she is about about the Texas state education system which means she really shouldn't be commenting on it at all.

And what's the point of taking SATS at 8 years old? So they can check that primary school kids aren't just fucking around growing broad beans in jam jars and eating PVA glue. Although come to think of it, that's all I did at primary school and I'm fairly sure I didn't fail my SATs. If, indeed, it is even possible to fail them.

| We always had standarized tests when I was in school, but I don't remember there being much emphasis placed on them until high school. Now they're emphasized in every grade. I worked as a sub for two years and there was always TAKS prep first thing in every class. I do remember in junior high we even had an assembly about how to pass the test even if we didn't know the answer. | |

| Talk About A "Slanted View" - Quote :
- Texas high school students would learn about such significant individuals and milestones of conservative politics as Newt Gingrich and the rise of the Moral Majority — but nothing about liberals — under the first draft of new standards for public school history textbooks...
[Board Member Ken Mercer] would add James Dobson's Focus on the Family, conservative talk show host Sean Hannity and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to the list of conservatives. Others have proposed adding talk show host Rush Limbaugh and the National Rifle Association. Are they trying to create a little brainwashing movement down there?

Because they're all extreme right-wing conservatives, and thus would gladly fall into lock-step with anything labeled 'Christian' and 'American'. Lord knows, I love my country as much as the next person, but this doesn't blind me to the fact that there's a large and very vocal group of loonies out there who tend to start frothing at the mouth the minute you mention the word 'liberal' to them. Because liberal=socialist, dontcha know.
