| The Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act - Quote :
- Two members of the U.S. Senate who have been behind unsuccessful efforts to ban all forms of human cloning have introduced new legislation with a new approach. They want to ban the use of human cloning to make human-animal hybrids, the kind of research taking place currently in England.
Yes, I wish I was making this up - apparently Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) are concerned that somewhere down the line someone might try to create The Little Mermaid in a test tube. - Quote :
- “This legislation works to ensure that our society recognizes the dignity and sacredness of human life,” Brownback told LifeNews.com on Friday.
"Creating human-animal hybrids, which permanently alter the genetic makeup of an organism, will challenge the very definition of what it means to be human and is a violation of human dignity and a grave injustice," he explained. Never have such eloquent words ever been used to justify something so stupid...I mean, we barely have cloning animals down, and he's already worried about mixing DNA? Oh, and here's the list of co-sponsors...notice a pattern? - Quote :
- Senators Jim Bunning (R-KY), Richard Burr (R-NC), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Bob Corker (R-TN), John Cornyn (R-TX), Jim DeMint (R-SC), John Ensign (R-NV), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), James Inhofe (R-OK), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Mel Martinez (R-FL), John McCain (R-AZ), James Risch (R-ID), John Thune (R-SD), David Vitter (R-LA), George Voinovich (R-OH), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).

Wait, most if not all of those supporters are from southern states. I feel so ashamed right now.

| Ooh, hey! Neither of my senators are in that list. Woot! Does this mean we're not allowed to give ourselves gills? Because that's honestly kind of disappointing. | |

They aren't all Southerners (last I looked, Oklahoma, Nevada, Nebraska, Arizona, Idaho, South Dakota, and Ohio were not southern states). So, the big pattern? They're all Republicans! Well, except for Mary Landrieu, who sounds like a token Democrat or a DINO (Democrat In Name Only).

| Yay, none of mine! Oh, wait, that's because my senators actually make an attempt at real problems instead of BS like this. (Note, I said "make an attempt") What makes me think these people don't actually have any background knowledge of the science behind any of this? And have no idea what they're talking about? | |

| Senators waste their time on pointless bullshit all the time. Really, they aren't even AT the Capitol a lot of the time. At least, this is totally harmless.
It's like when they vote to say they don't like something EVERYONE is against.

| I think WGW should start its own, world-wide political party, the no-nosense-ers.
(or we could take over the world! :mwahaha: )
either way, I'm sure we could do better (despite being mostly 30 years old or less) then the current crop of ideological nutcases.

Well, they could always throw their support behind Orrin Hatch's efforts to have Congress investigate the BCS. (In other words: No)

It's funny, because if someone says "common sense" or "no-nonsense" over here, it generally means "I am about to express a right-wing opinion". As for the bill, it's the same as ours. I'm not sure if they're genuine hybrids, it's more that human eggs are bloody difficult to come by combined with the fact that people find stem cell-type research icky.

| It's something like 99% person to 1% cow or what have you, it just makes it easier to get stem cells. I don't have a problem with stem cell research. You know how many embryos get chucked after not being used for IVF every year? But thats apparently okay. Creating more embryos in order to do reasearch into treating and possibly curing terrible diseases? To the boats! TO THE BOATS! | |

| Splicing human/animal genes isn't the most desirable thing I can think of (though I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere down the line somebody wanted to try it) but actually passing a law against it at this point seems a little pointless.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to use this law to later expand on it and prevent cloning altogether. Despite the fact that if that could actually be gotten right, it could be very beneficial (cloning new organs, and so on).

My first act as Senator will be to ban MPREG fics. Edit: Wait. That's not stupid.

IK, R? A university here announced it was going to start human embryonic stem cell research and exactly that screaming was going on. Meanwhile reasonable people tried to point out that the embryos were going to be fucked in the incinerator anyway, but to no avail.

| I guess the senators watched those Batman Beyond episodes where all the cool kids injected animal DNA into themselves and worked for the Joker, then decided that future must never come to pass.
(I bet these clowns didn't even think the whole thing through. For example: insulin? Comes from pigs. Does that make my grandmother a half-human/half-pig hybrid? If you want to ban future mutant babies, good for you, but like everything in life, I bet there are a lot of gray areas when research like this might come in handy.)
