There is a thing in the Uk at the moment called Operation Yewtree which is a systematic operation to ruin the childhood memories of anyone aged 30+ by pointing out that all out favorite TV personalities were kiddie-fiddling scumbags.

Well, someone finally had enough with all the accusations and arrests and decided it was time to speak up for all those poor persecuted old men.

What is the age of consent in the UK? I thought it was 16 so touching someone 17 in a sexual manner would be legal.

Unless, of course they didn't want the person touching them. And then it's rape. But it's not as bad as being gang raped so maybe I should just let people touch me as much as they want because I need to not hurt their little feelings.

Edit: Hell let's go back to the 1800's and have the legal age of consent be 13 again. It's not as though people will sell their daughters for five pounds a virgin anymore, right?

The age of consent is the only protection children, especially female children, have against sexual abuse and rape, because if someone is under eighteen/seventeen/sixteen then by law they cannot give consent to sex, therefore if an older person engages in sexual activity with them it is rape. Not that that stops anyone from casting eleven year old girls as seductive temptresses who provoked their own gang rape, but it is a protection not afforded to adults, especially female adults, who abide in a constant state of "yes" to sexual activity unless they can prove otherwise. It sickens me that someone would want to lower the age of consent to protect child abusers.

The thing about determining age of consent is that it's not just about physical maturity (although that does play a vital role, children's bodies are simply not adequately developed for sexual activity) but also emotional maturity (whether a teen is fully able to accept the emotional ramifications of sexual intimacy) and personal mental capacity, eg. have they had the 'birds and the bees' yet? Do they really know and understand what they're getting into? Is their potential partner responsible enough to refrain from intimidation and coercion? That ties into what Cyberwulf said earlier about AOC laws playing a role in protecting children from sexual abuse. A 13 year old may be physically capable of having intimate relations, but are they emotionally capable? Emotional and mental maturity varies greatly depending on the individual and with younger sexual partners would need to be taken into account.

It's the responsibility of the older partner to use protection and make thoroughly sure that the girl is comfortable with going through with any kind of sexual act. The thing is, though, if a 16 and a 27 year old were to have sex over here, some people would find it icky, but it would still be legal as long as full consent was given. If a 17 year old were to have sex with a 13 year old, though, that would be illegal (although unless a criminal complaint is made by a parent/guardian, they usually get away with it).
